Long on Stripes

striped maxi   striped maxi

I swear I put on makeup before I took these photos but alas somehow I still managed to look like I do before I wake up in the morning.

Granted, I'm not the most adept in the beauty department. My daily makeup routine consists of concealer, pressed powder, some shade of nude lipstick and sometimes mascara. That's it, seriously.

On occasion I may do a swipe of blush and some shadow for my brows, but somewhere along the way, I realized that I was bad with makeup and just plain gave up trying to learn. Things like eye shadow - and eye liner especially - give me the jeebies. I've tried looking up video tutorials but they just depress me. Usually anything I put on my lids end up migrating down to my cheeks within a few hours.

What I won't leave the house without putting on? Concealer (gotta hide those relentless under-eye circles! I like this cream, this powder and this combo) and Burt's Bees lip balm to keep those chapped lips at bay.

Is there any type of makeup that intimidates you? What do you have to use on your face before can start your day?

  2. ha ha yes I often look at my pictures and think, hmmm but like you it's just BB cream, concealer if needed, mascara and if I have time some blusher. Doesn't necessarily translate that well for blog pictures but at it's the real me :)

  3. I CANNOT do eyeliner. I have tried so many times and it just does NOT work for me. I am totally scared by it.

  4. That's an awesome skirt! I love maxis in great prints. Also love your hair lisa. That twist in the front is really cute. Eye shadows scare me. LOL I never know how to apply them correctly.

  6. I wanted that striped maxi skirt but they seem to be sold out of my size online and in my local Target, boo.

Lipstick scares me! No matter what shade I put on, it looks weird. So I have given up on it :)

  7. That necklace is awesome! :)

From what I understand, in order to make makeup really appear more evident in photos and on film, you need to really apply it thickly. I swear, I think, "ooh, that looks garish and ott," take the photos, and like you, it barely looks like I have anything on at all.

You have amazing skin and gorgeous features, so the extra makeup is totally unnecessary. Work it, girl!

  8. Stripes are becoming a weakness of mine too. This skirt is great!

also echoing the other comments, you don't really need makeup. :)

  11. You're looking cute in your maxi skirt! :) You know, maybe you just haven't found the right eye-makeup yet? Maybe something very non-allergic would stay on - like, not make your eyes try to "get rid of it" by watering up and making it run? Just a thought.
Hm, I used to not leave the house without my trusty Kanebo powder, but lately I've been leaving it off and enjoying the summer sun on my skin. I guess eye shadow, eyeliner and mascara are my must-haves, and blusher is the one thing I just cannot figure out how to use. On the one hand, I want cheekbones, on the other, I am terrified of accidentally making myself look like a two-dollah ho'!

  12. Bought that skirt and the black striped one as well just last week! Perfect for my classroom - stylish, cute and will keep my legs warm!

  13. Lip color has always made me hesitate. Red, in particular. But I'm definitely branching out and trying to use it more!

  19. I love everything about your outfit Lisa! Great skirt and jacket. To answer your question, the concept of "smokey eye" scares me. It never comes out right, so I don't even bother. I think simple make up is best.

  20. Liquid eyeliner used to scare the bejeezus out of me before I discovered the Balm's Schwing and now I can apply like a boss. :D

  21. I love that gorgeous skirt! It's sooo cute! I am afraid of blush actually. I've heard/read that it's essential, but I always look like a clown when I wear it :(

  22. Love your maxi skirt so much! Especially since it's from Target :) I totally agree that concealer is a must. It's my #1 beauty product. The one thing I can't seem to master? Eyeliner. I can do it, but I can't get it on the inner rims of my eyes. I've pretty much given up, but I think I'll survive without it.

  23. You look so nice - and i cannot stop looking at that necklace, what a great statement piece.
I always fear that I'll put on too much eyeshadow. Specially if its blue, I had a teacher in highschool that overdid it and it traumatized me for life.
I cannot leave the house without eyeliner.

  24. The stripey skirt looks great with the light denim and bold accessories! :)
Liquid eyeliner baffles me - I have shaky hands and can't draw a straight line to save my life. Every time I try it, I end up fishing a glob of liquid eyeliner out of my eye. Not fun. I'm also trying to learn to feel comfortable wearing a brighter lip.
I have the same problem with eye makeup migration - my eyeshadow creases after a few hours. I think I need to look into wearing a primer to solve the problem.

  25. I can't leave the house without makeup for feeling super self-conscious (due to my height, I look like a 12 year old without makeup). Any eyeshadow color besides black and gray I will never touch though. If you're worried about makeup melting, a setting spray is my favorite!

  29. My staples are blush and eyeliner. Most of the time, I don't have anything on my lips. But mascara? I know a lot of ladies won't leave home without them, but I have had a love-hate relationship ever since I tried a super waterproof one that was sooo clingy to my lashes I lost about a third of my lashes trying to remove it.

  30. Like you I rarely leave the house without concealer if I'm wearing contacts. If I'm wearing my glasses though, it'll be just blusher! One of the reasons why my outfit pics are headless is because I just do not quite care about make up, so I figured I'd spare others from having to look at my plain jane nude face. :D

  32. Why have I not spotted this adorable skirt at target yet??? I'm going to go back and look for it. I'm like you - I can barely handle tinted moisturizer, eyebrow tint, blush, and lip stain, sometimes I'll brave mascara. My mom didn't really let me even use makeup til college so I was way behind the learning curve and still am, I guess. :)

  33. Perfect summer outfit Lisa! I wish I look as good as you do with minimal makeup. My hubby always says I look tired if I don't wear makeup. I don't really have any beauty secrets but I can not stress the importance of moisturize!!! BTW, really like how you did you hair today. Enjoy your 4th!

  35. I keep my make up pretty minimal as well - I've tried my fare share of crazy colors and attempts at shading and contouring and they never look good. So a little blush, a little eyeliner, lipgloss, done.

  36. What a cute skirt. That is why I love Target. I just can't do the eyeliner on the waterline. If I don't have my chapstick I'm turning back. Have a great holiday!

  37. You look fresh and beautiful, no need for a lot of makeup. I can't work eyeliner worth a darn and I've been trying for decades.

This outfit is a really pretty look on you. Happy 4th!

  40. You look great with minimal makeup! Lipstick and mascara is all I do. Would you agree that it's too flippin' hot for a full face of makeup in the South? Ugh, SO hot and humid...misery.

  42. Depends... Sometimes I go out without any make-up looking like a dishcloth. Usually I need to do my eyebrows as they are very light so you don't see them. which is why I put powder on them. Mascara and red lipstick are also essential. Love the skirt. Would like to see it with another top some time.

  43. well, see...you dont need the make-up. you look flawless and natural, so whatever it is you are doing...just keep doing it. Love the stripe skirt and gorgeous necklace!

  45. Love the denim moto jacket! I'm pretty much a minimalist when it comes to make-up, but I've recently started wearing real lipcolor (Nars matte lip pencils: 1 step!). I think it really complements an otherwise bare face... at least I hope so :-) Thick, creamy moisturizer is the one step I absolutely cannot skip.
