Orange & Herringbone

orange herringbone  orange herringbone

We've got house guests coming over, so the earlier part of this week has been a bit of a mad scramble to get our house socially acceptable to be viewed by eyes other than our own. Granted we don't live like little piggies here but some general cleaning and tidying needed to be done, plus checking off some items we probably should have done a long while ago.

Like buying matching lamps for the living room end tables. Cleaning the covers on the couch. Getting rid of extraneous worn out throw pillows. Washing the sheets on the guest bed since our last guest (I know ...) And then since we were in a melee of household activity anyways, we went ahead and decided to clean out the fridge, organize the utility room and do all the floors.

So in a way I am glad for guests since it makes me feel like I need to get the house into a certain standard (that I should probably be living in anyways!), but dang, I'm exhausted and our guests aren't even here yet!

Do you do anything special to prep for house guests?

  1. Uhhh, yep I SURE do! Like whenever my mother visits, haha! I kid you not--one time my parents visited, my mother literally stepped into our entry way, looked at our TV console and said, "I can see the dust is about an inch thick!" I'm pretty sure I acted in a passive-aggressive manner that needs no explanation on here...but needless to say, every time I expect their arrival, I make sure to DUST every nook and cranny! Mothers...

    1. I forgot to add: the very last time my mom was in town (and a few visits after that annoying "dust" incident) she walked through the house and then remarked, "Your house is so...clean?!" She was very confused. Lol.

  2. Thank goodness for people coming over--it's about the only way our house gets actually cleaned. I mean, I'm a neat freak, so everything is always tidy and in its place, but dusting? Vacuuming? Mopping? Those are for company :)

  3. I agree that I clean best when guests are coming. I miss my cleaning lady! I try and have fresh sheets on the beds in the guest rooms and I keep extra tooth brushes, just in case... Hope you can relax a bit before they come.

  4. My MIL likes to show up unannounced which drives me NUTS because it's always when my place isn't that clean. It's always better when I have advanced notice when someone is coming over. :)

  8. This sounds like something we would do !
We have not had guests over since December so right now it's all pretty messy, I accept it.
When having guests over I make sure to have clean towels, soap and flowers in the guests' bathroom.

  11. You look so pretty and I love the color combo! My sister always gets a bouquet of flowers for the guest room which is a really nice touch. I usually clean and put on fresh sheets, lay out towels, etc.

  13. We usually run around and dust, do the bathroom again, and swiffer. It's hard in a tiny apartment..lol. I wish we had a guest room though! And such a great outfit - these colors look so good on you!

  14. Every time you wear this skirt,I covet it more and more. Stop that, you! :)

I used to clean and it was such an endless and thankless job that I broke down and did a totally bourgeois thing and hired a cleaning lady to come twice a month. Can my pocket book handle it? Barely. But do I love the smell of a freshly-cleaned house that I didn't have to work for? Absolutely!

    1. We are considering hiring a cleaning person ourselves. I've been the one pushing back on it but honestly it takes forever to get the place nice and polished and you get about 1 minute to enjoy it before you have to mess it all up again!

  17. Yes, I CLEAN like a mad woman! Unless they are unwelcome guests who I don't want to return. Just kidding! But seriously, I do clean and organize everything and try to make their room "special." It's fun having people over. Exhausting, for sure, but definitely worth it in the end!

  18. I am exactly the way you are: glad to have guests because finally the house will look like it is supposed to. (And at the same time thinking " Oh my goodness... really... do I have to do all that work?")
I am so jealous (in a good way)of your ability to combine styles and colours.

  22. Ooh, you have the fan fringe necklace from J.Crew! Love it with the orange and the big turquoise ring. :)

I'm not the tidiest person in the world and my condo is a bit of a mess right now, but I was just visiting my brother in Ottawa and his house is *filthy*. I always feel better about my messiness when I come home from his house. :P

  29. Lately that's the only way I get anything done in my apartment. I'm normally a pretty tidy person, but since I've been traveling I've been kind of messy. I kind of look forward to my mad dash cleaning escapades because my place is sure to be in tip top shape. I turn into a complete clean freak and the house guests are my motivation.

  35. yes, I go on a cleaning bender. Despite having our stamp sized home professionally cleaned every 1-2 weeks it manages to get filthy fast. I feel like I'm always cleaning.
Anyway, really liking the top with the necklace, cute contrast! I just pulled out a prepregnancy orange shirt from jcre- just one of the plain boatneck tops and my husband was all "oh woah bright shirt" ... men.

    1. We're seriously considering finding a cleaner to come in every few weeks ourselves. We just don't keep up on it like we should.

I recently bought a neon pink sweater that I am adoring and BF gives me the side-eye when he sees it. I guess the bright color trend hasn't hit mens fashion yet ... ;o)

However, after they arrive I love the space since it's clean and pristine! =) Enjoy your weekend! PS--Love your cute necklace with that look!

  40. We have guests on a monthly basis (no joke) so it seems like we are constantly cleaning for someone else, just not for us! Hope you have fun with your guests - that's the only upside to the cleaning!
