Properly

gingham scallops  gingham scallops

With to my style, I sometimes feel like I conflict with myself between looking prim and proper and looking edgy - or rather, wanting to look edgy. Because let's face it, for anyone's who has seen more than one of my posts, you all pretty well know that I veer more heavily on the prim and proper side of things (today's outfit, par example).

When it comes to what I am more naturally attracted to on the style front, I can't seem but to want what I wear to match, for everything to be all neat and go together, and I'd pick a full knee-length skirt over a skinny mini any day, if you know what I mean.

So I have pretty good confidence that I can make a peter pan collar and some pumps with bows look good, but I if you throw a slouch asymmetrical top at me with leather leggings, I am running for the hills.

I guess part of it goes with knowing what works with my lifestyle and my body type - but if I could rock a pair of sequin shorts with stilettos, I'd be all over it!

Do you have style conflict with what you wear versus what you want to wear?

  2. I think you look super edgy, cute, and proper here! I love the bright colors you chose to don, especially the red and navy together. Those two colors never fail to look good, but maybe that's just my inner patriotism.

  3. fantastic look, you have chosen the right red accessories!
    simply perfect!

  4. Classic navy gingham is my absolute FAVE. I love this look.

I think the only way my style conflicts is that I'd always like to look put together. I feel like I have a few certain outfits that really knock it outta the park but others that are just "meh." I guess I've just seen girls who alllllways look put together no matter where they are or what they're doing & I feel like I fall short a lot of times. I've gotten A LOT better but I think I'm mostly still learning how to shop for new items that will fit seamlessly into my closet.

    1. I suck at shopping for items that fit into my wardrobe - I totally buy pieces with that piece in mind and nothing else! I guess that means I am forced to pattern mix sometimes, haha.

  5. That's interesting that you think this way since I follow your blog faithfully because I think you're both prim and edgy! The clothing is certainly prim but you do such a fantastic job juxtaposing these with edgy accessories. I am in awe of your accessorizing mojo. I raided the jcp jewelry sales section the other day while channeling my inner Lisa. I swear! You are my accessory goddess. ;p

    1. Aw, thanks so much! That means a lot since literally before I started blogging, I had like zero accessories!

  6. I love your style and feel the same way as you. Leather pants are something I would look ridiculous in! I'd feel like I was playing dress up and not dressing for myself, and it definitely want to avoid that.

    1. Every time I see leather pants, I remember that episode of "Friends" where Ross wore leather pants and got stuck in (then out) of them!

  7. You can't fight it... but you can try !
I have this happen way too often, I want to be or look one way but when I shop or dress I tend to go the same way all the time... maybe its just our style.

  8. Hi Lisa! You look great! I guess in answer to your question, I do not know. If I could dress like a Victorian woman from over one hundred years ago, that would be my first choice. Then the chic femininity of the twenties. But I love the styles of today, too. And I never wore short shorts even when it was acceptable for me to do so.

The great thing is: tomorrow is Halloween! And for one day, we can dress exactly how we want and be who we want with no judgement! Yay!

    1. Ooh, I'd love to look like I stepped out of the NY society pages from "Age of Innocence." I don't think I could handle a corset though!

  9. I try to wear all different styles to avoid this conflict although it doesn't work all the time :)
Loving this look though. It's so pretty, and I adore that bag.

  10. I really like this look on you Lisa. :) If I could be perfectly preppy then I'd be happy. and there are some days when I'd really like to just wear converse and a hoodie but I don't think that reflects my age that well.

  11. Man, I am so loving these scallops! Everything about this is adorable. I totally feel you though. I'm very much on the "prim & proper" side of things, but every so often I really wish I could pull off an edgier style as well!

  12. You do classic and chic so very well! Nothing wrong with it. I dream of the day that I can find myself rockin' the looks that you do. It works for you! I, on the other hand, am totally rockin' the edgier things and it works. Both for my body and my life, but also because I don't know how else to do it? Maybe we should start a show like wife swap, but wardrobe swaps. haha, but seriously, the blue on blue is perfect here.

    1. It'd be interesting to see how another person could style a normally prim and proper dress into something with some edge and vice versa!

  13. I do! I want to be boho but I end up being mostly classic.
    I love your red accessories!

  16. You always look so put together, you know? But how about trying a pair of studded booties to ease into some edginess? Or what about a moto jacket?

I personally think the free people style boho is really pretty, but I could never pull it off. I'd just feel like I was walking around in a stage costume! Also, layering necklaces looks so pretty on other people, but I'd feel like an idiot. And Victor would ask me if I was a rapper. ;)

    1. I read "studded booties" and my eyes got big! I've actually considered studded booties before but I then thought I can't pull it off and I don't know if the look would be too young for me!

  17. I must say, choosing what looks for me is best than picking up an outfit that I want. I have been to serious outfit fails (all my life) but now that I'm getting older, I decided to wear what's appropriate on my age. But there are times when I feel the need to control over what I think vs. what I feel, so I just go with the flow with whatever I see first on my closet.

As always, loving your style. Bold colors really stands out + the scallops gives a different feeling on the outfit. Oh, and that's a lovely shoes!

  18. Your style is your style. One reason I love your blog is because it reminds me of my own style. I try edgy and it just doesn't work for me. I think when our clothing reflects our own taste we look SMASHING!! Preps in the house!!!

  19. My style is all over the board and totally dependant upon my mood. I don't have to show up to an office though...so I have quite a bit more leeway.

This outfit is quirky and unique but still preppy. Having the scallop on the dress makes it quirky as well as the bold colour mixed with the red and the gingham underneath. I really like this look and would classify it as "quintessential Lisa" : )

    1. I actually have a harder time sometimes trying to figure out what to wear on the weekends because I don't have the restraint of having something need to be "work appropriate." But then that means more options!

  21. I would love to look as prim and proper as you! For example I feel way too proper when I wear more than 1 piece of jewelry. Great outfit as usual! :)

  22. Lisa, that is the CUTEST outfit girl! I love the scallops, gingham, red, blue and that BAG! WOW! The pearls too. It all works. This is so you. I'm just realizing what colors and styles work for me. You have to take everyone else and what they're wearing out of the element. You have to study your body & shape and know what's going to work for you and not. You can still keep up with fashion, but you have to tailor it for YOU. Great post and topic.

this look i would definitely wear though, love the scalloped hem and the scarf wrapped handle!

  24. I have the same tendencies--sweet and edgy. I think I want to be edgier than I actually am. :) But we [all] have multiple aspects to our personalities, and express them at different times. I think most people are probably not only sporty or only frilly or only biker chic--at least I'm not only one "type"!

  25. I find myself in the more feminine and classic styles as my comfort zone. I love edgier looks but I just can't pull it off. Love the Americana look of this outfit.

  26. As my first thought was, "Oooh, I like how you tied the scarf around the purse handles!" I'm guessing we have similar style outlooks! I will NEVER be cool/trendy/hip, so I love going toward the color-coordinating and classic styles. :D

  27. I have the same problem - prim and proper with wannabe edgy. I sometimes feel like I dress too young for my age but at the same time I don't want to dress too old! Still, I don't know if I'll be rocking the crop tops or the leather leggings anytime soon. I think you look great in both styles - this dress is so pretty!

    1. One of the things that I admire about your style is that you're never over-accessorized. You can take simple pieces and subtle accessories and put it together to make a fantastic, interesting outfit without seeming like you're trying to hard. Effortless! I wish I could do that!

  28. I face the same conflict. I love all of the edgy street styles right now. All of the black and white, and oversize layered gold necklaces, and hi-low tops and skirts. And then I go shopping and stick to my girly, twirly comfort zone. I don't really have any pieces I can rework to be tough and edgy. How edgy can a pink tulle dress be, really? I don't have a leather jacket and black studded shooties to toughen it up. Trying this new style out would mean making some new purchases. I'm going outlet shopping new week, and I'm going to force myself to try some new things. If it looks ridiculous, only I and the fitting room mirror will know!

  31. I know what you mean. I can be all ladylike one day in a little black dress (with or without peplum) and jeans and gingham the next. All over the place, but usually still classic.
And I love to wear jeans with a short jacket. But I cannot. I would look like a triangle. Not flattering.
