'Tis the Season

green leaves  green leaves

So Halloween's now out of the way, which means it is time for the Real Holiday-ing. And though I love the November-December festivities, it always feels like it's a bit of a time crunch to get it all in.

You can totally consider me as the Over-Holiday-er. It's just built into my brain that during the holidays, I need to spend time with pretty much everyone I care about. And while it's not like I've got bazillions of friends and family vying for my attention, between my BF and I, we've got people scattered all over the east coast. So when it comes to deciding who to spend which holiday with, it sometimes does feels like things come down to a coin toss every year over who, when and where.

We've tried switching off holidays and we've done just doing holidays separately with our own fams, and about every iteration in between. I've racked up some mileage. We've even talked about just doing a holiday totally on our own without anyone else - because isn't that like a sign that you've "made it" as an adult when you get to have your own holidays the way you want to - but "overachiever" in me just won't let that fly. Holidays are about spreading the cheer, right?

So what do you ladies do? How do you determine how to spend your time during the holidays?

  1. This outfit is perfection. I love how you linked up similar pretties for layering. Honestly, the holidays will be tricky this year because my mil passed away in Feb. All of the "firsts" without her are proving to be difficult. I'm not spreading any cheer here w/my comment, but that's my truth ;).

  2. Holidays can be very tricky! We're having Thanksgiving at my parents' house and my hubby's family is coming too. We both wanted to spend the holidays with our families, but also wanted to spend it with each other.

  3. Such a cute top! I like to spend the holidays with family and I know Grant loves it too. I think when your childless it's easier to just celebrate with your hubby, but once you have kids you better believe Grandma will want to see them :)

  4. It's a tough one now we have a daughter. My husband was never that bothered about Christmas and spent quite a few away in various countries whereas my sister and I have always gone to my parents for Christmas. The first year we had E (2011) they all came to us but never again. Last year we split the day in half (after parkrun of course, have to see my running family!) and I never felt relaxed. This year we've not even talked about it, not sure who will crack first but if I had my way, I'd always choose my parents of course!

    1. The good/bad thing for our families is that no one lives close enough to split days - I can imagine it could be tough to relax, but everyone gets to partake at once!

  5. I love your shoes!!! So fun. As for the holidays, it's pretty easy since both my hubby & I have a really small family. My parents do not celebrate Christmas or Thanksgiving so it defaults to my hubby's family.
    Have a great weekend!

  6. Love love! You're always so put together :)

I struggle with the holiday time crunch - with separated parents, grandparents to please and in-laws to boot, there just isn't enough time to go around. I often rotate with who gets the "day-of" event and spend time with others the day after or before. That said... I'm thinking a vacation away might be the best option! LOL

  7. That looks like a real holiday blouse.

Every year is different for us. We live far away from both of our families, one in France and one on the other side of the country so often we don't get to visit them at Christmas. Some years we do love spending it alone. Other times we travel. I actually love that it isn't the same each year.

  9. That top is so pretty. I love Ruche! Holidays have been a little tough for us too over the years. It has made it a bit easier because John's family doesn't really celebrate holidays - they were raised Jehovah's Witness. So we've mostly spent each Christmas with my family either at my brother's or at my parents'. Although in the last several years we've enjoyed a couple of Christmases at home without anyone which has been wonderful but also doesn't feel quite like Christmas to me. Thanksgiving is always pretty easy because John is usually coaching a soccer tournament somewhere so that takes up that weekend. This year we'll spend Thanksgiving at our house with my mom joining us. And Christmas will just be the 3 of us - since it's only a couple weeks before my due date I can't travel.

    1. Well it'll be nice for you guys to have a more "quiet" Christmas since it'll be the last big holiday where it'll just be the three of you (plus Copa)!

  11. Very pretty top and blazer Lisa. Deciding on who to spend the holidays with and how to spend the holidays can be hard. Some people visit neither families and just take a vacation of their own. LOL It's just me and my mom so I don't have that decision to make. I know you guys will make the perfect one.

Holidays are a bit of a fuss. I have boring family who always wants someone else to host the dinner.
On mu husbands part of the family, well we see them maybe 3 or 4 times a year....

  13. Oh - thank you for the style inspiration, Lisa! I have the same blazer and am always trying to figure out what to wear with it!
My family is so spread out over the US we all gave up on trying to get together during the holidays. None of us is sad about this since we see each other when it is not so hectic. I'm not a holiday person so usually my husband and I pretend they don't exist. lol

  14. That's such an awesomely Christmassy shirt, Lisa! Love how you've paired it with those shoes, too!
Victor and I almost always celebrate with my mother. His parents live in Australia where it's mega warm for Christmas, so it's kind of no contest about who we celebrate with - they have other kids, so they'll survive. :P Last year my mum ditched us and went on a singles' holiday, which was weird! We went on a trip to San Francisco together, just the Vic and me, and it was so much fun, but not Christmassy at all! (Udon for Christmas dinner, for shame! And Django Unchained on Christmas Day.)

We do Thanksgiving with my in-laws and Christmas with my side only because DH's family doesn't do Christmas. It makes it easier, but this year we are trekking to the Carolina's for Thanksgiving.

  21. First I would like to mention how much I like your outfit! This patterned green blouse goes so well with the blue pants and both colours look absolutely great on you.

Holidays are a special theme for me! As I really like it to go to work (I work as a purchaser) and enjoy the social community at work it feels sometimes strange for me at home. At home of this cause because I don´t like it to travel as I am mostly really disappointed about the holidays which I don´t spend at home! Of this cause my lovely husband and I decided that we try to enjoy your days off at home and we simply then enjoy our wonderful Bavarian region.

And thank you for your nice comment on my blog - I checked immediately your blog with the result: I like it!

I would like to follow you on gfc and/or bloglovin. It´ll be great if you come return to my blog to follow me – then I will follow you immediately back.

  23. I love the print on your shirt and shoes! Your necklace is so pretty! It's so funny that once Halloween is over, everyone gets into holiday mode! I wish it wasn't like that though since I like to enjoy the fall without everyone getting crazy about presents and all the commercials for buy this or buy that. Once it's December, I do like all the lights and the crisp winter air and everyone happy that the holidays are coming. But I'm going to try and ignore it until December 1st lol!

  25. Fantastic outfit, Lisa! I love how you echoed the pattern of the top with the shoes. I am honestly not a big fan of the holidays, scarred by too many stressful occasions with relatives while growing up. I just look forward to a few days of relaxing and eating lots of good food with my husband and kids.

  28. So first, this outfit is just completely perfect. Seriously, I love it. And yeah I know what you mean about holidays. I know I'm pretty lucky that I've got the family visits sorted out pretty fairly between my BF and me but there are SO many other things going on with work, friends, etc. this time of year.

  29. First off.. I love your top - and the whole outfit actually. Especially your necklace. I know what you mean about splitting time b/t families. It's tough! Luckily, my husbands side gets together for "3 Kings Day" in January and that's where we end up "celebrating" Christmas with that side of the family. We exchange presents then and it lets the family members spend time with their other 1/2 of the family on Christmas. I know it sounds weird, but it really works for us!

  32. I love your necklace! I basically spend the day before the Holidays with my Mom and then the actual Holiday with his parents. My Mom has five adult children so to make it easier she just does hers the day before. I've quit going to my Grandmas though I miss it, with 27 grandkids and 18 great-grandkids it's too crazy for me. I stop in the day after to see her.

  33. That is such a lovely printed top! In the US you have thanksgiving and Christmas, so that's good that you can spend 2 major holidays between friends and family :)

Over here, we try to spend Christmas with both of our families. It ends up being a long Christmas day as there is travel involved, but it's lovely to be able to have them close enough to do that. This year we still haven't decided what we are doing, but hopefully will be able to spend time with both families still.

My decision is pretty easy this year. I'm working 10 days in a row which cover Christmas. We usually just see my family at Christmas time because my husband's family lives in another province. I try very hard not to say yes to everything because I end up overbooked and stressed out.
