My Inner Fan
As much as I'd like to think of myself as someone who has grown into a modern sophisticated woman, in reality I've just gotten really good at hiding my inner fantasy world fan girl.
I was engrossed in superhero cartoons as a kid - Transformers, Voltron, She-Ra, Thundercats, Gargoyles. If it was some sort of sci-fi fantasy series with heroes in spandex suits, I was all over it. Instead of playing with Barbies, Little Me slew imaginary dragons with my Jem doll in Crayola marker warrior paint while she rode atop her fearless steed - aka Rainbow Brite's horse Starlite in plush form.
While my girlfriends were styling their hair and trying on lipsticks in high school, I was busy collecting X-Men comics and nose-deep in Anne Rice's vampire novels (Lestat, you're still the best). In college, I spent many a late night sketching medieval suits of armor and writing macabre emo dystopian fantasies.
In adulthood, I no longer wear my questionably cool hobby on my sleeve - seriously, I've long since gotten rid of my Darth Maul tees - but I still love escaping to mystical alter-worlds where the monsters are big and the heroes wield swords, cast spells or wear armor, so my Kindle has become my treasure trove. Like the Muirwood or Hunger Games trilogies. The Beautiful Creatures books. And currently, the Mortal Instruments series.
What do you love that most people may find surprising about you? What kind of things are you a fan girl over?

That dress looks so pretty on you, Lisa! Love the floral print. Have a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteI'm so loving this dress on you...the print and color are awesome!
ReplyDeleteSo firstly, obviously, this dress is absolutely amazing and you look stunning. Secondly, I was surprised to hear about your inner fan girl, and I am totally the same way (I looooooved Gargoyles!) I have left my quirky tee shirts behind but I continue to secretly read away on my kindle, and just pretend it's something sophisticated!
ReplyDeleteLove the dress! Also love the Mortal Instruments Series! I think all of us have a hidden inner fan! Great to know a little more about you!
ReplyDeleteLee
Ooh, I love fantasy world stories, too! I'll have to check out this Mortal Instruments series... That red dress is so pretty on you!
ReplyDeleteYou would so be kick booty at being an action woman. I seriously can totally see it!
ReplyDeleteOh I wish! I think the closest I could get would be to become one of those masked viligantes who can make citizens' arrests on baddies - if I could catch baddies, ha.
DeleteMy 15-year old daughter is a sci-fi girl!! So, you sound very familiar. She writes novels/short stories and reads like crazy!! Not into make-up, hair or anything that takes away from reading/writing/drawing her characters (she is pretty good, too. She did win a Scholastic gold medal for a short story a year ago). But, she sometimes feels out of place amongst her peers, which is hard.
ReplyDeleteAwesome for your daughter! She sounds really talented!
DeleteOMG, this is kind of like reading about myself as kid! I was all about reading fantasy and SF novels, watching Buffy, collecting X-men comics... and not learning how to put on makeup, haha. I guess I just don't bother hiding it, I mean I've written and made some SF and fantasy comics with my artist friends as an adult, and even sold them at conventions! ;) I love that you're a closet nerd, hehe. Oh, but if you're reading Mortal Instruments, you should try the prequel series, which I love waaay more, the Infernal Devices! It's set in Victorian London so it's all steampunky. And it's hilarious. :)
ReplyDeleteI am going to have to try the Infernal Devices because I just finished up the 5th book and there's no more for now!
DeleteAwesomes! you will love them, they are the bestest! ;)
DeleteReally cute dress Lisa! I love the color and print! So pretty! Oh gosh, I still haven't gotten over mine and live mine out on my blog each day (especially through makeup). Food and beauty! What a weird combination, but it's always been my LOVE! So my blog is my little fantasy place :D

Love the floral and stripes mix!

Forever 21 Giveaway!
I think I've commented before on sharing some of the same interests growing up, but I was absolutely obsessed with She-Ra and Jem as a little kid. My mom made the coolest She-Ra costume herself for Halloween one year in the late 80s. I graduated to Xmen once I got in school and actually recently started reading current Xmen issues again since Jean Grey finally (FINALLY) came back. I am flipping excited about Wolverine coming out this weekend and cannot WAIT to see some footage from Days of Future Past. I still have all my old comics and action figures that I collected (mint in box obviously--although I can't say that about She-Ra and Jem. They were for sure played with so they are all hanging out together loose in a big box) and I have to admit to having a few comic tshirts that I wear on weekends. Nerdy girl here!
ReplyDeleteTaylor
I've got my Darth Maul stuff still in their boxes and the comics are boarded and individual baggies at my parents. However, unfortunately my She-Ras are long played out and gone, boo!
DeleteI'm a fangirl for many geeky things... Harry Potter, LOTR, Game of Thrones, Arrested Development, Hunger Games, pretty much anything with vampires minus Vampire Diaries, the list goes on and on. And while my collection of novelty tees has dwindled, it will never be nonexistent! I wear my nerd hat proudly! (metaphorical hat)
ReplyDeleteI am also a crazy cat lady.
And I read the Buffy graphic novels. But I never tell people about it... that's the only one I kind of hide a little.
Aw, I like the Vampire Diaries, I read the original novels way back when and it is kind of interesting to see how the series varies (like I like Carolyn, who was such a hateful character in the books).
DeleteThe dress looks great on you! The color, too, is a personal favorite. :)
ReplyDeleteAs a kid, I was obsessed with Wonder Woman. She was powerful, but also beautiful, intelligent and kind. Plus she had a cool invisible airplane!
Oh i like your print mix here -
ReplyDeleteMost people will probably find odd that I love museums and cannot get enough of them.
Also that I am an avid collector.
You look great in red, Lisa! I have so many geeky traits! I love to read and can go through an entire book without getting up to eat or go to the bathroom. TMI?
ReplyDeleteHaha, reading won't keep me from eating, but the Kindle goes with me!
DeleteI'm a fan girl over everything, but my biggest loves are the Fast & Furious movies and Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise. I hope they never stop making these movies.
ReplyDeleteChristian Bale are Batman. Sigh.
Delete1. I love that you are a fan girl. I love sci-fi/fantasy too, but more BSG, Star Trek, and anything dystopic fiction-y :)
ReplyDelete2. That dress is super fab! I think you will keep it forever. The silhouette, the colors, the fit, they are all timeless and perfect. Want. xo
Beautiful! You have been hitting it out of the park lately!
ReplyDeleteAnd She-Ra! Gargoyles! SQUEEEEEE! Do I have both of those series on DVD? I think so! :D
this dress is so gorgeous on you lisa!
ReplyDeletehmm... a fan girl of... not too sure. i do love cars, fast cars - my dream car is a 1967 camaro ss. ;)
the bsb still do bring out a bit of a crazed teenager in me, though.
Beautiful print and fit; you look gorgeous in red.
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of zombies, sort of. Mostly, I'm scared to death of them and read zombie books only in preparation for the zombie apocalypse, but I do read a LOT of zombie books.
I'm such a giant fan girl of many things including '80s cartoons (Jem and the Holograms!) and old movies and Hunger Games and Harry Potter and I recently read the first Beautiful Creatures book and was into it too!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous print on you. The belt is perfect. Brown is so inspired.
ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of depressing dramatic usually foreign alternative movies. Strange I know. But I also love animated movies...so they balance each other out. LOL
bisous
Suzanne
I was never much of a comic book kid of girl and really can't remember what I was into when I was kid besides playing outside. This is such a pretty dress on you. I will have to look into Beautiful Creatures - I've never heard of it. Have a great weekend Lisa!

The series is good if you like southern gothic and witches!
DeleteI loved Jem! Had the videos and the dolls. Lucky for us my Mum and Dad kept all our old videos and they are now all at French House; Jem, Care Bears, Get Along Gang, Thomas the Tank Engine etc so through the years I'll be able to watch them all with Elodie. Starting next week :)
ReplyDeleteOMG really??? I've always been a comics fan. In my time, it was Archie hahah! BTW, you look so adorable in this summer dress!

Fashion Finds on a Dime
Hi Lisa! Thanks for stopping by my blog the other week. :)
ReplyDeleteThat dress is gorgeous! Very cute accessories, too. Aw! I loved Gem and Thundercats as a kid. :) I was nuts about Sailor Moon in high school. For quite some time my parents would take me to China Town every weekend so I could get posters, stickers, or whatever I could get my hands on. My room turned into a SM shrine. My friends all knew not to call me when my show was on. I loved pausing my tapes and drawing my favorite characters. I still have every single thing packed in a box in my current house. I even have some of my items around my desk space (like the pencil cases and pens).
Sailor Moon! I had friends who were entrances by her!
DeleteLISA,
ReplyDeleteComic book fan or not, there is no doubt that you are now a beautiful sophisticate with impeccable taste, and a sense of humour!

You absolutely do look sophisticated! We all have our guilty pleasures or interests that others find odd. Mine would be gardening. Most people look at me funny when I tell them I love to garden...guess they picture an older lady and not a 20-something fashion-obsessed girly girl!

Style of One's Own
First of all, you look especially great in this outfit. Second, YEAH JEM and She-Ra! Thanks for putting a reminiscent smile on my face!
ReplyDeleteLove this dress! The print is great and it looks so cute with the bow belt!

Jeans and a Teacup
The print of your dressis beautiful. I think I would have combined it with killer heels. As for fantasy stuff: none. Boring isn't it? Wish I had some.
ReplyDeleteThe print of that dress is so pretty! I love that color on you
ReplyDeletehttp://www.closet-fashionista.com
Well you already know I love those same things. And yes, people are usually surprised when they find out. Have you read any of the books from the Song of Fire and Ice series by George R.R. Martin? I think they would be right up your alley.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the rec, I'll have to check that out since I just finished the 5th Mortal Instruments book and there are no more for now, boo.
DeleteThis is a perfect, perfect summer outfit- absolutely gorgeous. I love the red floral and hint of stripe and those great stylish comfy sandals. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteI am a total fangirl, though I am always sceptical at first and then get sucked in. grew up with Narnia and Lord of the Rings, and embraced Harry Potter and Game of Thrones (reluctantly...the show got me, then I conceded to read the books). Loved Jem, but hated the oversized heads on the dolls, so I had Barbie and the Rockers instead :) I've rediscovered she-ra, and my bf actually bought me a swiftwind recently- eeps!
I'm a Harry Potter fangirl for sure! I only (alas) own two HP tees:)

Lisa, I am such a fan of your style. Love this print dress with the striped bag!
ReplyDeleteAs to your question, I am a fan of anything sparkly...never met a gem I didn't like.

I love hockey and nascar, and almost any kind of sports. And I love superheroes too.
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking how pretty and stylish your hair looks and remembering how you didn't like it when it was cut. Is this that cut grown out a bit?
I'm an unrepentent musical theatre fan. I spent $150 on a ticket to see Les Miserables in Toronto in the fall!
ReplyDelete(I'm still coveting your striped clutches...wish I had snapped a few up when I could...)
