Floral Sailor

stripes + lace

Boxy cropped tees, tanks and sweaters seem to be all the rage now, and I can't help but to like the look myself, especially those paired with a big frilly midi skirt and sky-high stiletto sandals. But ... as a stocky short person with no waist and an office job where baring midriff during staff meetings is likely frowned up, it's not a look that I can really pull-off.

So my way around it? Pair those boxy short tops with a longer underlayer which adds some interest to an outfit - and bonus points if that layer has some interesting frills or lace or crochet detailing to expose. On the lookout for more hemmed layering pieces right now!

  1. Greetings Lisa - Cute look, and a great way to make those shorter tops work-appropriate. Like the opposite of "modesty panels" that used to be put under tops to cover up too much cleavage. There's a business idea in there somewhere . . . Jennifer. P.S. I have that J.Crew flat stone cuff too - love it!

    1. I'm surprised there are not more retailers selling layering pieces with pretty hems since cropped tops are the trend right now ... ah well, I adore the stone cuff - such an easy piece to wear!

  2. I love how perfect that top is layered under that striped tee - the floral bits play so well together I thought it was one piece at first! :)

I am lucky(?) I don't have that problem with cropped styles - I'm petite was a super short torso so cropped tops hit perfectly at the top of my hips most of the time, ha!

    1. That a short torso usually also means super-long legs ;o)

  3. Neat idea to add an underlayer with an interesting hem! I've been drawn to crop tops, too, but have just been wearing a plain cami underneath. The lace is a great touch when paired with that pretty top!

  4. I have a long torso so cropped boxy tops are also no good for me either, I'm always layering tank tops underneath. This is much more interesting than just a plain tank though, I thought it was actually part of the top for a minute.

    1. The florals on the striped top seem to work well with the embroidered flowers, I lucked out!
