Matter of Sharing
So I have a personal style blog. I take pics of myself wearing pretty (I hope) outfits and flash a big smile at the world while doing so. And I often ramble on about any number of jumbling matters that flash across my brain. If I get to go somewhere cool, I'll include pics sometimes. Maybe throw in a recipe on the odd occasion or mention of something absolutely nom-tastic. I whine about my weight, just 'cause. And of course, the pup. Because her urge to photo bomb while I'm trying to look all cool/aloof/svelte/self-important cannot be contained.
But obviously there's a lot that I choose not to share. Like my personal life. Most of the stuff I do that doesn't involve a Bravo TV marathon. My job. Trips that take me to awesome places that I don't get to see (or more likely, not-so-awesome places that no one would care about anyways). Personal commentary on real-world issues. Minutiae. It's obvious I keep things pretty yellow-cake-with-milk-chocolate-icing-hold-the-sprinkles around here.
I guess that can make me a bit trivial in the sense of just posting outfit pics and sharing on randomness. But I think we get that we only get to see about 0.002% of who a person really is on a blog. And that percentage is obviously carefully curated. So for those of you who have blogs, what do you decide to keep private vs. public online?

This dress is adorable on you! I share very little about my personal life on my blog...mainly due to my job. I don't need parents and students all up in my business lol
ReplyDeleteHaha, I know what you mean!
DeleteThe pop of yellow makes this outfit!
ReplyDeleteA) That dress on you? Adorable! B) I am pretty open about my life on the blog. I don't weigh in on political issues because I really don't even do that in real life. I am very open about college and my annoyances/struggles there and really right now that is where the majority of my energy is focused. I am VERY open about my boyfriend and I's relationship but really that's just because I adore him and he doesn't mind.
ReplyDeleteI think you write about a lot of stuff that people can relate to and that's awesome!
DeleteYou look so fab in this dress! I'm loving how you accented with yellow!
ReplyDeleteAs far as personal vs public on the blog, I don't share a whole lot of my personal life. Mostly I write about the average day to day happenings, but I rarely get too serious!

ReplyDeleteVery pretty...as always! Love the print and then the pop of yellow:)
ReplyDeleteI share a decent amount...including my children, my friends...but of course there is a TON I don't share...my hubby is super private so he is never featured and I don't share my views on politics....I decided a while back, that since it was a "style" blog I would talk mostly about "style"....
Have a great week.

I agree, I like to keep things light.
Deleteoops..sorry...I meant, I love this on you! you always look great!

Love the yellow and blue combo! As for my blog, I used to have a personal blog where I only shared stuff about my life and thoughts. But that stopped working for me so now I just share as much as I feel comfortable with on my style blog and the rest of it is just fluff :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute dress! I love all the yellow accessories against it!
ReplyDeleteI don't usually talk much about my job either because you never know who is reading your blog.

I share a lot of personal stuff like past experiences and how I got over or grew from it. However, I still hold back a lot of information about my job for security purposes. I love opening up about accepting one's self and size though, makes me feel better when someone comments that my story has me them feel better too.

I'm with you - blogging has actually helped me to feel a lot more accepting of myself.
DeleteI share mostly the same info you do... very basic - but sometimes I will rant about happenings around me, stuff that upset me and stuff i buy.
ReplyDeleteNow that I think of it, I can be quite boring ;)
Pretty dress !
Cute dress and I love the blue and yellow! I'm actually pretty open on my blog, as you know. I share A LOT. But a lot of people would be surprised to know the amount of personal stuff that I chose not to share on my blog. Or that I am really private in person. The parts of me that are very personal on my blog are always shared based on the premise that it might actually help someone else in a similar situation.
ReplyDeleteI love your openness, Frannie!
DeleteI don't share a lot about work - although I'm sure if you googled my name my linked in would pop up. i have no problem talking about past experiences or things I've dealt with (in the hopes it might help someone else) but there is a little part of me that is afraid someone from work will find it and think I'm crazy. I also don't share a lot about my husband because his job remains pretty private, and I'm okay with that. And who I am on my blog is me in real life. Although I always hope a bit funnier ... ;)
ReplyDeleteYou look lovely in this dress, Lisa!
I know, I'd like to think of the "blog Lisa" as a mildly funnier and more put-together version of "regular Lisa." ;o)
Deletei love this outfit, Lisa! blue and yellow are one of my favourite combinations. i don't share much about my personal life on my blog (i guess the cropped head would go to support that! lol) but that's me.
ReplyDeleteLisa, you look fabulous! The dress is pretty and so are you.
ReplyDeleteAlso, now I want that dress. Clicking through . . .
Great dress! You look wonderful as always. And I'd love to see more pup photo bombs! :-) I went private so that I wouldn't have to worry about sharing anything too personal. I'd sort of like to keep it public in case my experiences could help someone in a similar situation but I'd just rather not have all my bidness out on the web for anyone & everyone to see.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean!
DeleteI'm loving this blue and neon combo!! I decided that my blog would be strictly fashion and outfits. I pretty much never put anything personal out there. It just seems too risky. Plus, I decided my blog was all about sharing fashion anyways. :)

Love this simple chic outfit! The neon yellow really pops!!
ReplyDeleteThe dress is super cute :) I def don't share about personal life - family job etc
ReplyDeletekatattack2000.wordpress.com
I'm really into blue + yellow these days, so I LOVE this outfit!
ReplyDeleteI think it's wise to not reveal too much on the blog. You never know who is reading, so keeping rants, super-private information, and other potentially risky info close the the vest is a good idea!
Agreed!
DeleteSo cute! This dress fits you perfectly! And I love the arm candy :) So glad I found your blog, following!

Your dress is adorable! I share what I am comfortable with people knowing. The chance of people I know and interact with in person that will find my blog is slim, but there may be a possibility. At the same time I want to share, but I've always been a pretty private person, so it feels a bit weird.
ReplyDeleteI know, it's a strange combo of openness and privacy to juggle on the Internet.
DeleteLove this dress - very flattering on you. Looks like whatever you are doing with your weight management, it's working...you are so tiny.
ReplyDeleteIn regards to what I write about, I try to keep it pretty lollipop & cupcake type of content. I am a pretty happy and positive person so I want to make sure I translate that in my blog as well. I do not have a very strong opinion about politics or religion so I would never write about it. On things that I do share, it's pretty boring like going to the zoo, park etc.. I don't live a very glamorous life :)

For me, it depends. I don't mind sharing about family, work, personal life as long as I don't get too much into the details, but it's nice to know a little bit deeper about the person behind the blogs that I read. It makes it more personable, but of course you need to be comfortable with what you share!
ReplyDeleteLove this dress! You always look so polished :)

Such a cute dress, I love the pop of yellow too. As for what a share and don't share, I tend to leave out specific places and locations, like where I live, work etc. Some people openly share this info, I prefer not to be so easy to find :)
ReplyDeleteGinny
It's a matter of preference I think. But in my case, I share a little of what's going on i.e. current events and life related topics.I do believe that everything we say has a lot of impact to everyone who reads our blog.
ReplyDeleteNice outfit by the way~ I love royal blues paired with lighter colors. Gorgeous! :)
I probably overshare and no one really cares...I've no idea! I keep Robin off the blog, Elodie appears every now and then as does my sister. I've not been particularly safety-conscious regarding my location as you can pinpoint my town based on my parkrun related posts! I like to share and I like others to share as well, it feels more personal then, as if you are really connecting with someone on the internet who lives in an entirely different continent!
ReplyDeleteso pretty!! thanks for doing the giveaway!! xxo
ReplyDeleteJamie
I am doing a giveaway as well Stella&Dot: www.candystilettos.com
My blog is mostly for fun, so I definitely leave out a lot of personal stuff.
ReplyDeleteAgreed with the earlier comment, whatever you are doing for weight management, it's working...you look fantastic! (not that you ever didn't look awesome)

ReplyDeleteThis dress is gorgeous! Love the pattern, the length, the shape! And those pops of yellow are perfect.

Hi Lisa!! For me I edit/keep out alot (ALOT) of personal feelings/emotions. I try to keep my blog silly and funny...light hearted stuff. If I do need to vent I usually elude to the event or situation b/c I don't want to weigh my readers down with my problems...and I'm like that in real life too. I don't want to come off as fake or pretending I'm happy and like my life is perfect...but me in a miserable state of mind is one HOT MESS.
ReplyDeleteI love the color combo you choose...blue and yellow. I usually go navy and yellow but I like how happy this outfit looks :-)
~Jane B.
I think everyone who reads a blog understands we only show very edited glimpses into our lives. But it's OK to share once in a while too!
DeleteWhat a fun dress, the print is super cute! Nothing like bright accents to elevate the beauty of a lovely dress!

Code Overdressed
It's funny that you mention this, I was recently struggling with the same issue. When I read fashion blogs, I want to know why you put together certain items and colors, if it was a deal, and where you wore it/why. I think that's the personal aspect, the place you wore it, what you were doing and why.
ReplyDeleteI've been very depressed lately and had no one to talk to about it, so I started a second blog to write about my personal struggles and joys. (That no one reads.) It's where I can talk about everything Non-Fashion related, like an online diary that anyone can read. I didn't want to mix the thing that makes me happy, my fashion blog, with my depression and medical issues, or alienate my readers, so now i just have two.
If you AREN'T keen on sharing every aspect of your life (I just have no one to talk to about my problems and venting helps) I'd stick with your pics and outfit posts, and when/where/why/how you wore it. If that helps you at all :)

I used to keep diaries when I was younger - I've considered doing a private blog just for me as an online diary too. I think it may be a good tool to vent with.
DeleteThat dress is Pretty, Flirty & Girly. You chose great accessories with it. I love Navy with Yellow.
ReplyDeleteI love this navy and yellow combo!!
ReplyDeleteI don't really talk too much about my life on the blog, because well, it's pretty boring. The blog is basically the most exciting thing I've got going right now.
Chic on the Cheap
I basically share the same amount of "personal" stuff as you do on my blog. I'll usually blog about trips, concerts, or other fun stuff like that, but predominantly, it's just about my outfits. I do like interjecting tidbits of true trivia about myself because I like to think it helps connect me to readers on another level and they remember me more than just for my shoes that day. I dunno though! I do feel like I'm not really that interesting! ha!
ReplyDeleteLove the print of this dress, BTW!

Love the dress, it has a great shape! And, you accessorized PERFECTLY (I'm jealous).
ReplyDeleteInitially I didn't want to share anything really. The more that I blogged, the more that has shifted.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm starting to get a bit bored of blogs that are only about fashion or trivial stuff. I want to know that person. Not just the highs, I want to know the lows too. Someone I can relate to, to cheer for and maybe somehow grow through.
It may be because this year my husband had cancer and I've just come out of hospital but my views about blogging are definately changing. If someone can't be open and honest I don't want to bother anymore.
bisous
Suzanne
I am rather open about nearly everything. That is just my character. My decision to tell or show something or not is: would I mind seeing this on the front page of a daily newspaper? If not, than I won't publish it.
ReplyDeleteAnd talking about my job is a bit risky as well. As a lot of colleagues follow my blog.
Greetje
Hey, Lisa. I enjoy reading your posts, whether you post about your outfits or personal vignettes. You know what they say, you should blog about what you're passionate about. Since I love clothes (esp. J.Crew ;) I focus mainly on outfits and outfit styling. Also, blogging about fashion is a positive distraction for me. That said, I often think about sharing more about things like the challenges of living with a chronic health issue and such, but then that's not so much fun to dwell on when you have to live it every day, plus it may come across as a bit whiney to read about all the time. :)
ReplyDeleteLisa, i tend to keep most personal things out of my blog..I think? But I think good readers can read between the lines, and infer alot about us based on what we wear, how we assemble our outfits, where and how we shop, and how we write, especially education level...
ReplyDeleteYou excel in your writing and it makes your blog special and personal.
I do love the blue dress with the sunny yellow..
Now quit thinking about your weight..you are VERY thin.
