jeans + scarf  jeans + scarf

Thank you so much for all your feedback and advice on my previous post re: weight loss/maintenance. I'll be doing a follow-up post plus will respond to your comments shortly. I hadn't had a chance to do it yet because my laptop decided that it had finally had enough of this cruel world late last week and melodramatically died on me.

So after a weekend of "what to do with this 'free time' business when I can't access the Internet?!" I am currently on a loaner laptop while I wait for a replacement to come in. Bleh ...

jeans + scarf  jeans + scarf

Those of you who have read my blog for a while know that a large portion of my "fun" money (dollars left to spend each month after bills, groceries, savings, others, etc.) go to my foodie pursuits and shopping for clothes, shoes, bags, etc. I like to eat and I like to shop. My fun money most certainly does not go to technology.

I've whined my way through a new phone after detonating my original, talked about getting a new camera forever but have yet to commit, and now I'm sitting on my wallet after having to replace my laptop because I'm upset with having to shell out more fun money on considerably unfun things. To me, technology is not fun, it's useful. Plus things with microships in them are ridic expensive (Edit: or microchips. But anything in ship form must cost more than a chip). Seems silly to wait for weeks sometimes for a pair of shoes to get discounted $15 when here I am shelling out $$$ for a phone or computer.

I guess you can call me adverse to change. Or cheap. Both.

So how do you handle unexpected large expenses? And are there items you just can't stand to spend money on?

  1. Gorgeous outfit, Lisa! Love the scarf with the faded jeans - fabulous!
I despise spending money on technology too.... And don't even get me started on medical and dental bills. Not Fun At All..".. But necessary.

  2. I agree about not wanting to spend money on technology. I'm still using a computer I got from my parents, but I'm positive once this one breaks I'll be on my own. I have no desire at all to spend my money on new gadgets!

  3. I'm the exact same way about technology and spending the $$ on it. I'll definitely wait until something is broken or just no longer useful until I replace it. And even then I'll go for cheap and useful over the latest and greatest. I'm also really loving your outfit today!

  8. I loooove those shoes! We save a little every month into an emergency fund. That way when something unexpected comes up that's not part of the monthly budget we are ready. The trick is to put the money in a separate account and discipline yourself not to use it for anything else.

  10. Microship! That's got to be the cutest typo I've seen in my life! :) I'm just like you, I haaate shelling out money on new technology. I literally use my things until they die - I've had my current laptop since 2007. It has 5 minutes of battery life before it goes "piffff" and turns itself off, but I'd rather shell out for a new battery from ebay (someday in the future, of course) than buy a new machine. Not just because of the cost, but because I don't want to have to learn how to use the Satanic Windows 8! So yeah, you're not the only one who'd adverse to change!

Btw, this look is adorable! So simple, but you look so chic with your stripes and scarf! And is it just me or is your hair getting all pretty and long? :)

  12. I am the same way! Minus my new camera, I hate spending money on technology, but I NEED it. My iPad got stolen a few weeks ago and I was so distraught at the thought of having to replace it but I couldn't see myself living without it so I had to replace it and I was SO MAD!!! Now I can't shop either because between the vaca and the iPad, I'm broke in the fun money department. I love your scarf today!

  14. That scarf is so pretty with the striped top! I've been contemplating getting a DSLR forever and I'm just not sure if I can justify spending so much money on a camera.

  16. I'm having the same issues with technology! Our computer stopped working a couple months ago, so we had to replace it. A few weeks ago my camera started having issues too, it still works, but needs to be replaced. I'm cursed when it comes to technology! Like you I would rather not shell out money for it as I see technology as practical and not so much of a thrill to buy. ( For example, I only recently caved and bought a "smart phone".)

Anyway, I really like your scarf. It looks great with the striped shirt! Gorgeous casual style!

  17. Love your outfit_ I love striped mixed with pattern and you always choose so well.
I also hate spending money on tech.. I prefer to spend on pretty things..
I did buy an ipad recently though, and I love it//

  18. The scarf is beautiful and I love how you've styled it.

I hate spending money on technology because it's obsolete a week later. That drives me crazy. I also hate having to spend money on my car because I commute by bike so I don't drive very often so keeping the car up drives me crazy.

  19. This is a great chic, simple outfit - the fun scarf and baubles look great with the stripes! Like Gracey, I hate to spend money on my car. It's a necessary evil because I need a reliable car to get to work, but I get so grumpy when I take the car in and figure out that I need to drop $500 on a set of new tires ...

    ReplyDelete
  20. That's how I feel about car repairs. The WORST. I'm curious..what kind of laptop are you getting? We've been in the market but I just can't seem to commit. There are too many choices!

  21. My Husband ADORES technology. He works for a tech company so we always have Macs and iphones, Ipads, etc. It bothers me. I could buy new shoes with that! In the end it pays off, as he helps me with my blog. We have an "emergency fund" we both contribute too in case of the computer crashing, blowing a tire, or drowning the cell phone. Believe me, it's easier to just add the spare $5 to this when I can to help make a dent in expensive emergencies!
I love your scarf mixed with your striped shirt. My favorite pattern mix!

  22. We are gear heads in my house - I personally can use a laptop til it gasps & dies of old age, but we like Apple products, so we drop money on those. Otherwise, I'm loathe to spend money on gas - unavoidable but so annoying how much it costs me!

  23. I love the scarf, especially with the stripes! Bummer about the laptop. :( Big unexpected purchases usually go to my Amazon store card. Depending on the amount/purchase there is 2-3 years of no interest. So then I can pay if off in reasonable chunks each month. This helps me a lot since I'm working full time and am going back to college to get my teaching credential. There is not a lot of wiggle room in the budget!!

  26. Ahhhh everyone's in stripes! It seems like I completely missed the memo :(

Also, RE: weight loss- I feel the same way. One of my friends recently said that it's basically just impossible unless you only eat from Gwyneth Paltrow's cookbooks. I'll be your long-distance support buddy if you want! My knees are absolutely killing me lately, so I've decided to drop about a dress size.

    1. I like that Gwyneth admits to working her butt off to be able to look the way she does - but shoot, if I was a big star and could afford cooks, trainers, dieticians, I'd probably look a heck of a lot better than I do now too. We need to all virtually support each other to better health!

  27. The one thing I do not like spending money on is my car. Lately, it is making a rattling noise and I have an appointment on Thursday to have it looked at which always means lots of $$$.

Love this outfit - so effortless chic!

  28. I hate large, unexpected expenses! Especially related to cars :( We recently had to take my husband's car in for over $800 in repairs, and then my A/C went out, so now we'll need to take mine in as well. It's always a burden when stuff like that happens! Blah. Cute outfit, though :)

  29. I hate spending large amounts of money at one time! Car repair always makes me queasy because it costs nearly as much as a semester at college sometimes! Seriously, why do things cost so much!?!

  30. I don't like technology - i don't invest in it- It has the word LANDFILL all over it. BUT, i use it.
I think things should last a lifetime, like they use to. You have no idea the bribe process that my husband had to go through in order for me to accept a flat screen tv to enter my home.

  31. I'm with you. I hate spending money on "necessities" especially tech stuff or stuff for the house. I need to change that though. All this $ going into my closet isn't good.

  34. I know how you feel - tech is wayyyy to expensive! Which is why I refuse to upgrade anything until I've used it for so long it's barely even functional. Hence my three year old iphone, and five year old computer. But I'm really happy with them. Who needs an upgrade?

I always think about how many new bags I could buy if I didn't have to spend $2000 on a computer!

Love how you are wearing your scarf! I haven't done that in a long time... I should!

  35. Oh, sorry about the laptop! I hate it when techno stuff craps out. I usually have a big meltdown which does nothing to help the situation but at least I feel a bit better. I LOVE those jeans on you and the stripes are perfect! Great shoes too! Nice touch with the metallic bag!

  36. bummer about your laptop. I feel the same way about technology (its useful but not really on the fun list per se). As far as the expenses, I usually find that I hate spending money on the necessary basics instead of the fun or pretty things but tend to go for those more. I guess I try to overcompensate and be rational lol

  37. What a fresh and modern way to wear a scarf. I love it! I have so many beautiful vintage scarves that my mother passed onto me, but I feel like an old lady when I wear them. This has inspired me. I am going to give it a go. Thank you!

  38. I am like you, apart from eating LOL spend all my free money on "adornment". Hate car bills or computer bills etc. Fortunately my husband bought the camera. And I spent money on a new iPad. Need (well "need"....) a new iPhone as I still have the 3 from the beginning. As it still worksI cannot bring myself to spend money on it. And my computer is ancient so I back-up a lot.

  40. Love this scarf! I hate it when unexpected expenses pop up. I have a feeling my laptop is about to go too (it probably 7 or 8 years old!). Car repairs are the worst. We've been working with a financial adviser and are trying to prioritize and budget for the unexpected. It still sucks though!
