Gingham and Pearls

gingham + pearls

This is probably a bit terrible, but at last count, I've got a total of eight different gingham button-down shirts (I have more striped tops, but I'm not even going to go there). I can't seem to help it, but gingham shirts just seem like the right mix of casual and dressed up, country and preppy to me. I know some folks get the whole plastic tablecloth vibe from gingham, but I adore it -  most times I actually like to treat it like a neutral (here for example, or here, here ... here ... I can probably keep going ...)

What do you think about gingham? Too country? Too preppy? Just right?

  2. I have one gingham shirt from GAP but I always keep an eye on their sales for other colours as I really like mine, as you say, it's the perfect balance of casual and a little dressy!

  3. I like to think of gingham as plaid's sweet little sister. And I don't care about the plastic tablecloth vibe - I think it's perfect! What other colors have your got your in? Do you keep to classic red and blue?

  6. I think that gingham has a rare ability to both look either country or pretty depending on how you wear it. For example, I grew up in the country but the gingham them was a little bigger. The preppy version I like because it's a smaller print and almost always accessorized with pearls!

    1. Funny, because I think the bigger gingham prints are kind of cool, those are the ones I've not seen much before!

  7. Your red gingham looks awesome with the cluster pearls. Absolutely stunning shoes and jewelry. You look a little preppy and 1000% chic. Hope your mom had a Happy Mother's Day!!

  9. Hee! I own AT LEAST 8 gingham shirts, more striped shirts than I can count and love them all! Gingham, stripes, plaid, seersucker....all classics! Your combo of denim, gingham and pearls is so cheery and fun! Love it!

  10. I seriously never thought of gingham until I started blogging... 4 years ago or so... And it's still going strong in trend! I think it's a happy print and makes every outfit I've seen look fresher! It's such a photogenic and versatile item! I own 2 gingham shirts now and love them!

  12. Gingham is one of my favorite prints even though I seem to own very little of it. To be honest, it started with Dorothy's dress in Wizard of Oz--I remember it clearly LOL And gingham and pearls always look great together for one reason or another.

  17. Lisa - you make gingham look chic! I cannot wear gingham because I worked at Bristol Farms in my early twenties and had to wear it every day. It was very exciting to me the day I could finally throw away my gingham shirt!

  20. It's not a crime to own 14 gingham shirts - what IS a crime is to own 14 boring drab white shirts. A crime against fashion! And stripes are neutrals, which makes them wardrobe basics, so you don't have to worry about them. ;) Feel better now? XD

Oh sorry. you said eight. Not fourteen. Whoopsie. Anyway, I LOVE gingham! Probably because it can be both preppy and dressed-down. It's super versatile, so it'll work extra hard in your closet... Right? ;)

  22. You can't go wrong with gingham! I have also amassed a large quantity of these gingham button downs. Maybe 10 or so? Love the styling of this outfit, especially with those cute loafers!

  23. I'm right there with you, Lisa--I have five gingham button up shirts, with the most recent addition being purchased this past Saturday (a purple one from Loft). I just love them with girly accessories like this pearl necklace!

  24. Don't feel bad I have 9 gingham shirts and am on the hunt for more. Joe fresh via jcpenneys has some cute ones this season. I didn't jump on the gingham bandwagon until recently and jcrew doesn't seem to be making them much anymore.

  32. I will always have a soft spot for gingham because of Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island. The dress she wore for special occasions on the Island was the red gingham 50's style. You styled this look just right, to be more modern with the jeans balancing the sweet look.
That whole outfit is very cute.
    Have a great evening,
