Jelly Squiggles

squiggles  squiggles

Remember those butt-kicking glittery jelly sandals that were the rage when we were in elementary school? They made funny little squishy noises when you ran in them but they were cheap as dirt and came in a rainbow of hues. My friends and I all wore them to death.

Fast-forward to present day and jelly sandals seem like they are back. In adult sizes. And some of them are pretty grown-up kickass (like these - not so cheap as dirt, but awesome).

And with jelly footwear, so should come jelly purses. Now I know I am way late to the party, but I saw these Furla candy satchels for the first time a few weeks ago in a ladies restroom at the airport. One stylish gal carried a glittery purple number and another had a metallic grey one.

Always on the lookout for The Perfect traveling purse, I was in love. Perfect size to stow everything while traveling, fits under the seat in front of you comfortably, made out of rubber so it's water-repellent and durable. Of course I wants one. (But my old jelly sandals were like free - this jelly purse is so definitely not free ...)

So - big rubber bag, what do you think? And what are you lusting after recently?

  2. They are back! I saw a grown women wearing some the other day when I was stopped at traffic lights. I was so gob smacked to see them IRL and not just in a fashun magazine that I did just sit and stare to be honest.... They were clear, glittery ones. Man alive.

  8. I totes had the jellies in elementary school and the jelly bags in a wide variation in high school. LOL I don't know if I'm ready to go back but they sure are fun!

  9. Ooooh, I like that Furla jelly bag. Remember the jelly wannabe Hermes Birkins about ten years ago? They were all over the place (I had one, too, in pink, I think.) But I love the "classic" shape of that Furla bag!

I remember wanting jelly shoes so much when I was in elementary school, but my Chinese immigrant parents wouldn't have it! Yet another thing I missed out on in my youth, like having PB&J in a Smurfette lunch box instead of rice balls in a metal bento box. :-P

    1. I had a Smurfs lunch box but I don't remember what my parents packed for me to lunch. Though I do remember the meanie boy from pre-K that chucked my lunch box and broke it!

  10. Yes to jelly shoes. I have two pairs, one flat and another heeled one which are probably one of my most comfortable shoes ever, they're from the Melissa - Vivian Westwood collection.
And I have too been lusting over the Furla candy bags.... but have not succumbed yet!

  11. Ooh, I do like those purses. I've seen them on other blogs. I don't travel very much, so it's utility wouldn't be a big draw for me, but it's shiny jelly deliciousness would :)

    Love your shoes!!

  13. I remember those jelly shoes! I had a sparkly pair that my mom loathed, but I loved. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Your skirt is super cute! It looks great with the stripes and orange necklace.

  14. OK that is REALLY cute. I say go for it! I'm confident you'll find multiple fabulous ways to use one.

  15. Loved my jelly sandals but do not miss the new-shoe blisters! Yikes! I think jelly bags are way cute but it would be hard to shell out $250 for one. Although.. it would make a perfect beach/vacation bag!

  18. Did you see the denim trim one? That one is discounted and is so cute! When I first read your post, I wasn't too keen on the idea of these bags. But when I saw their pictures, I liked them! Cielo and papaya are both beautiful colors.

  19. OMG, I so want a pair of jellies. My daughters are tired of me squealing when I lay eyes on them, each and every time. But I'm an 80s girl and we wore jellies. I'm just too embarrassed to buy a pair now. Maybe I'll sneak out without the kids...

    Love ya,

    1. Jen mentioned them below, J.Crew factory has some really cute jelly ballet flats with a bow. They're really comfy and could be rainy day footwear! (Enabling, I know ...)

  20. Wow, those jelly purses are cool! Jelly must be making a comeback indeed since I saw some interesting ones at Forever21 lately...some "Mel" collaboration. I had some lavender jelly shoes when I was 7 and was so devastated when they ripped up after only a few wears...

  21. I am in love with this skirt and well the whole outfit! I def had my share of jelly shoes and bracelets. I saw some high end jellly shoes at TJ Maxx sometime ago and was so tempted to buy them for old time sake.

  22. I have a traumatic memory of jelly sandals... my mother bought me a cheapo pair at K-Mart that tore up my feet, and then spent a while arguing with their customer service to let her return them. I still have super-sensitive skin on my feet (easy to not only blister but scrape and cut via shoe friction) and I can't bear the thought of wearing jelly sandals again!

    1. I think I had one pair that I wore to death and then another one that rubbed me the wrong way. No wonder you won't give jellies another look!

  24. OMG! Jelly shoes! I have the fondest memories of them! I do have problems paying large sums of money for something referred to as jelly, but then I checked out your link and the purse is soooo cute! Plus I love your points about how great it would be for travelling! That's a toughy!

  26. I totally owned pink and purple jellies. Mine had sparkles in them. I loved that they came with a tiny heel and I felt like I was wearing a grown-up's shoe.

  29. Anything rubber to me is a turn off. I get all sweaty just thinking about it. I saw some of those expensive jelly Vivianne Westwood shoes when I was out the other day and the only thing I could think of was how they would give me blisters on top of blisters. Not sexy at all.

On the other hand I do like your outfit. Very Jackson Pollock.

  33. Hmm, no jelly shoes for me growing up, and none now either. Although, the Melissa & Vivianne Westwood collection was mighty tempting. I saw those Furla satchels at Saks while I was in NY last week but I didn't take a closer look. I think they might be fun addition for traveling.

As to what I'm lusting of late... I think I've caught the maxi dress bug. I want more! Self-restraint have won by far but it remains to be seen how long before I cave. Heh.

  34. Such a pretty skirt! And yes on jelly shoes! I had a pair of lavender purple ones and I wore them to BITS, lol

  35. Hi Lisa! I love the textures on your skirt! I know exactly which Furla Bags you are talking about. I want a bright pink one myself...but I personally do not dig the price point...too pricey for a jelly purse (for me). Possibly get it second-hand if you don't mind used purses.

    Have a great day!!

  36. I think you look darling. Lovely outfit, and again the shoes. I could give you carte blanche in shopping for shoes for me... Wouldn't that be a nice new career?
As for the jelly trend...hmmm not to keen on it, especially not when it is transparent. But the Furla bags look gorgeous. However, I will wait until they make them in these colours (fuchia please) in this shape.... in leather.
If you do buy one for your frequent travels, watch the bottom of the bag. I saw in the picture that it is sagging a bit when you put something in because there is no hard bottom in the bag. I don't like saggy bottoms LOL

  37. That's a great idea! You can easily clean a bag like that too. Airports are a mecca for germs!
I love the bubble necklace and the shoes. SO Pretty!
