Falling into the Bandwagon

orange & elephants

I was pretty successful at staying away from the J.Crew bubble necklace for several years, since the original had a heart-stopping price point, the size is nearly too-darn-big, and there are copycats all over the place. I didn't know whether I love or hated the piece since it seemed pretty popular in blogdom, but I relented and fell for the trend a few weeks back when I bought one off Ebay for cheap - obviously not the real deal  J.Crew original, but for $12, I didn't think it would hurt to try it out.

I wore these outfits over the weekend when BF and I went to visit some fam. The weight of the necklace felt a bit heavy on after some extended wear, but the quality of the copy I got seemed similar to the real deal (granted I don't own the real version of the necklace and have only ever handled it in-store) and it sure was a no-brainer way to make a statement on an otherwise basic outfit. Was I glad I bought this necklace? Absolutely, I definitely think I'll get my money's worth and I had a hoot to telling anyone who asked that I scored this necklace off Ebay for $12 because I do think it looks more expensive.

Will I get another one? Honestly I am seriously tempted since the rainbow hues are gorgeous and I was pleasantly surprised at how wearable this pretty big necklace was. But I don't know if I will. Because this is obviously a knockoff of a real deal necklace that is selling for a lot more (though I personally feel that the original is way overpriced for what it is) and it is a distinctive-looking piece that seems to be everywhere on everyone. So I fell for a trend - but I don't want to look like everyone else. Except I do. But it's pretty. And a tag overdone. But I like it.

What do you think about the J.Crew bubble necklace? When a particular item becomes highly sought-after and popular, does it make you want the item even more, or does it turn you off from the item? If you want the item and can't get your hands on the original, do you keep seeking or opt to get your hands on a copycat?

  2. I hear you, I've seen that necklace, or a variation/copy of that necklace EVERYWHERE. And it's a great piece, but when you see everyone sporting it, it made me reluctant to pick one up. For $12 though, all that reluctance would go out the window.

  3. I broke down and ordered one from ebay too. The quality on mine is actually really nice. I never would have bought one through J. Crew - too expensive! Since there are all these high quality knockoffs around who knows if you bought the real one or not?

  4. Love your hat. You look great! I bought a pale pink ebay one for $16. I like it a lot, the quality seems good. I haven't worn it a ton though. It is just SO big and not super child-hauling friendly. I just need to bust it out more and not worry about it.
I love it with the simple white tee. Thanks for the ideas!

  5. LOVE that on you! Such pretty colors! I too think the retail version is seriously over-priced. I ended up picking up the Factory version necklace and then gave in and bought 2 more knock offs for $15...navy and pink. Love them!

There's no way I'd spend $150 on a necklace, so yeah, sign me up for the knockoff! I just won a bubble necklace in a giveaway from an Etsy shop and I'm anxiously awaiting its arrival :)

Re: the bubble necklace - It looks great on you, and if you like it, then totally go for the knockoff version.

I try to stay away from trends as I want clothes/accessories that will last more than a few seasons. Plus I am trying to buy things that suit my personal style, rather than buying into a style that really only looks good on another person.

  12. I couldn't spend that much on a necklace so I bought this same color on eBay! It was a bit heavy and I don't really wear it that much because if it's weight. I also have those shorts in the same color, so I will have to remember to wear them together!

  14. I, too, got a J. Crew wannabe bubble necklace from ebay. It is of substantial weight. As cute as it is, I can't imagine wearing mine all day long. J. Crew version is nice but there is no way I can justify paying that much for a costume jewelry.

    1. I adore J.Crew's jewelry but I can't stomach paying full price for most of their pieces, especially because it is costume jewelry. I've been lucky enough to score some pieces I really adore on sale though.

  15. I have gotten several of the bubble necklaces. I'm old and no one has the nerve if I'm trying to be young. However, I have seen a lot of scarves and they make a good color statement. I hate scarves in the summer because of the heat and my body type.
But the necklaces also make a good color statement and I like that. If I get tired of them I can always take them apart and remake them. Just a short trip to a craft store.

  21. I saved up for a while in my paypal account and then pulled the trigger on the kelly green bubble from J.Crew. I know $150 is really steep and I debated for an entire year before making this purchase. (I still kick myself for not buying the red J.Crew bubble last holiday season, when it got marked to $89.99 + an additional 30% off...ahhh what was I thnking?) Anyway, since I bought the green necklace I have never looked back...I am SO happy with it. I don't see them going out of style anytime soon, and even if they do, I think the bubble necklaces will always be considered "Classic J.Crew." Love your coral one! Nice price too.

Apart of me likes the bubble necklace, but I balk at the size of the necklace and price tag, too big. Although its popularity has tempted me to think about getting one because I love a good statement necklace, it has also deterred me a bit because everybody has one. If you love it, I say go for it especially when the alternatives are just as good as the original version without the big price.

In general, I like the bubble necklace (real or not) on others, but I don't know if I can pull off such a show-stopping piece (and I do love me some statement jewelry). You picked a great color and wear it well, but I say wear the orange one a few more times to see if it's worth buying another in a different color.

I own two bubble necklaces that were $15 each off eBay--the papaya one you have and a white one. I am definitely in the "get it cheap where you can" camp. I would never had paid $150 for a real one, but for what we've paid for ours, even if you only wear it a few times, it was worth it!

  29. I also joined the bandwagon and got a pink one a few weeks ago. I got it for 19.99 on GroopDealz. It's a whole lot of pink, so I didn't know how I felt about it, at first. I've gotten tons of compliments while wearing it, so I guess it's a good buy!

The orange looks great on you. You're definitely much better at pairing your necklace. I just wore a white t-shirt!

  30. I have to confess that I own a couple of those bubble necklaces and I first got introduced to them by seeing it on other bloggers. I LOVE statement necklaces and when I saw it first I just fell in love, but couldn't pay the overpriced original one so I went for the one on ebay. I've worn them a lot and I don't mind seeing it on other people because I've already accepted the fact that it won't be the first time that you'll see something worn by everyone else in the blogosphere. I guess this is just a reality that you have to accept when you're blogging and how someone styled that item is the inspiration that I think we all seek when reading other bloggers. Now, to your outfit, I think the color that you picked in this necklace is really pretty and it goes perfect with that lovely elephant print shirt, and gives a lot of character to your outfit with the white tee!

  31. Love the printed top and shorts outfit! H&M did have a version of this necklace last year that I almost bought but I passed because I thought it was too cheaply made. I'm sure the J.Crew one is of better quality and good for you for scoring it on sale!

  32. I love the orange color! I too have fallen victim to these necklaces. I just bought and wore another today. Now that I see the orange one...do I need three?? lol

  33. I broke down and ordered one from eBay too but I haven't seen anyone in person wearing that necklace. I think that we (as fashion blog readers) see many of the same styles on many blogs and feel like its everywhere but in reality it that is not the case - at least here in my town.

Fashion should be fun and $12.00 to try a trend is reasonable.

JCrew is often way too expensive.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The necklace looks great with those outfits! I haven't bought a bubble necklace yet, but mostly because I wear more delicate jewelry. I think $12 is a great price for any necklace, and it's definitely a good idea not to invest too much in a piece if you're not sure you love it, or how much you will wear it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. There's no way I would ever buy the real deal - I saw the price and gawked. I've been tempted to buy one on ebay for awhile now, and the funny thing is that while these necklaces are SUPER popular on the blogosphere, I haven't actually seen anyone wearing one outside of the blogging world. This makes it seem more unique/original to me since I'm not likely to run into someone wearing the same necklace. You really can't beat $12, and the knock-offs look exactly the same as the real thing. I love the outfit with the orange shorts and I think you've finally talked me into getting one of these!

  39. I love you in these cute, casual outfits! As testimony to how deep in the suburbs I live, I too have never, ever, never seen a bubble necklace on a single soul IRL. This is a piece that I am strangely not tempted to own, even though I do admire it on everyone else in blogland - they are beautiful necklaces, but I like shorter lengths like 16-18" on myself. That said, if I did want one, I would absolutely be buying this version from Ebay - what a steal! I too love J. Crew jewelry but cringe at their prices - I *finally* scored a giraffe bracelet with the extra 30% off and it was still more then I wanted to pay for that stupid thing, but I have wanted it forever and a day. Anywho, while on the topic of knock-offs, those were NOT JR sandals in my post - they were the Target version from a couple of years back! I hope your slippery heels get some good traction on them soon - I am always nearly killing myself in those Paso Fino sandals when I go down my carpeted stairs, so I feel ya!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Oh you and Target totally had me fooled - those are great copies. And I bet they had some sort of traction sole so you don't go slipping around! My JRs are so slippery, I ended up having to change shoes, I was sliding around even on wood!

And I do adore JC jewelry, I have several pieces that I love, but I did purchase them all on sale. I got their colorblock resin necklace a few months ago and within one wear, one of their little stones have fallen out!

  41. For what its worth, I am pretty sure H&M did this necklace first (or shall I say they copied it from somebody first, and I don't think it was J. Crew, but I could be wrong!). I saw it at H&M well over two years ago and didn't buy it because I didn't want to pay $30 for a necklace at H&M. Lol. Go figure. Then the $150 J. Crew version came out, and everyone went bananas. I still wasn't willing to pay for it, but they are popping up everywhere now so I recently bought it in turquoise and yellow...so make some room for me on that bandwagon. :)

    ReplyDelete

    1. I don't know who came out with the design originally, but I am betting it was neither H&M nor J.Crew. There may be some vintage piece or DIY piece that is in a vault somewhere, haha.

I don't know when, but I know J.Crew came out with their bubble necklace a few years ago, but only in like two colors. So I am surprised they came out with it again this season in a bunch of new colors since they rarely bring things back, but I guess they knew what they were doing because it's super-popular.

I stayed away from this necklace for a long time, but I'll admit, it's such a great statement-making piece!

You're going to laugh, but I had no idea about J. Crew's bubble necklace until I bought the H&M turquoise dupe and a blogger friend told me. I rather like the look especially nowadays when pops of color are the big thing. I'm definitely not above buying the ebay version of things (but not out and out counterfeits that claim to be the real thing even when they are obviously not - I just don't like the deceit) - especially trend items.

    1. The bad part of this whole bubble necklace copycat deal is if someone is in the market to find a real deal bubble necklace for less than retail, it is going to near impossible to figure it out on Ebay. And granted I think JC way over-charges for this necklace, but I am sure they are upset about this dilution and I feel for the ladies who do end up buying the real deal and see everyone and their sister rocking a knockoff.

  63. Actually, I got gifted a JCrew dupe, and I LOVE IT! I don't own the real deal either, but I've been wearing the heck out of my turquoise bubble necklace. And when you consider cost-per-wear, I think you scored big time! :)

  64. I love your elephant shirt and the necklace is a perfect compliment. I love this necklace so much that I've contemplated buying it for the full price. Luckily, I never pulled the trigger. After obsessing over this necklace for a couple of months, I want it even more now. I've never bought anything on eBay before, but I'm tempted to try it out just for this J.Crew knock-off. I'm just worried that I'll end up with a defective necklace.

  66. $12? why not? I just love the bright orange color and your elephant shirt is adorable.

  67. I've really been getting more and more into bigger necklaces and larger pieces of jewelry... haven't gone quite this large though!

  68. This is such a timely blog post! I right now have a copy in my shopping cart on Etsy. My friend bought one on Etsy and was pleased with the quality. The shipping took a while as it came from overseas. She bought a white one and loves it. I love the turquoise one, but think I could wear the white one more frequently. Luckily, where I live no one has this necklace so it isn't as "overdone" as in the blog world. I put overdone in quotations because, frankly, who cares? It looks great on you and is a fun trend to follow. The cuteness of it probably explains the popularity; so many people buy it because it looks so good. (Unlike the terrifying stretch gaucho pant trend of 2006 that swept my campus.)
