Skinny Red

ribbons & red  patterned & red

Skinnies have been popular for a long while now but considering I'm not super-model thin, I don't wear them that often, and sure as heck have thus far stayed clear of colored ones. Why draw attention to areas of my body that I would rather want to hide?

And yet it's been a few years and it seems like the skinny jeans trend won't die is here to stay, so why fight it anymore? And with all the fantastic colors out there, I couldn't just keep hiding my bottom half in dark dim denim, but I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a trend that I wasn't completely sure I had the confidence to pull off. So I considered if serendipitous when I saw PhiPhi rock a pair of colored skinny cords with such aplomb - and from Old Navy of all place.

I took a deep mental breath and I went big, buying a pair in the brightest red they made. And ended up playing around with two different looks (neutrals, people, neutrals, these jeans are not a quiet color):

So I'd love to get some feedback from you gals. How would you ladies recommend I try to wear these colored cords? And are you a fan of colored skinnies - and if so, what color palette do you favor and how do you wear yours?

  1. Love the red skinnies on you! Maybe that's what I should do, try a cheapie Old Navy pair rather than expensive AG Stevies. :) Also, those bow shoes are adorable. :)

    1. Yeah, I have a hard time paying a lot for jeans. Though I've never even tried on a pair of designer denim because of heartburn over the price - so they may end up changing my life, but I don't know it!

  2. Love that black and white sweater/jacket with them! I like a longer length top with bright pants. A long turtleneck tunic would be cute too, or an untucked blouse in a neutral (do you have that J. Crew polka dot Blythe shirt? that might look cute with the blazer).

  3. OMG both of us are SOOO wearing red skinnies! I just love it.....it's a happy & fashionable color! BTW, I love that black & white flowy cardigan you're wearing...surely is a perfect match to the red pants!!!

  4. I love colored skinnies and I am by no means model thin. I think skinnies look great on a lady with curves. I love those red ones. Have you tried just going basic black with them? Black blazer and heels?

    2. I'm a curvy girl and have been terrified to try the skinny jeans! I have tried them on a couple of times but haven't been brave enough to try yet.

  5. I have a pair of bright blue skinniest from Old Navy (Sweetheart cut not Rockstar - my post baby body can't handle anything too low rise!) I like them a lot and am impressed with how often I've worn them. I was tempted to get red (and still am) but panicked and thought it might look like I was dressed up as Christmas! LOL You look cute in yours - I'm glad you took the plunge!

    1. Hehe, it is weird, I do have an urge to pair green with these pants - maybe I'll need to save that idea for horrible Christmas sweater day or something!

  6. I love you in the bright skinnies! Both styles are great, but I especially love the B&W sweater. (Probably because I have been stalking that sweater for awhile now) Both shoes are amazing. You can totally wear skinny pants. I have a few of the ON rockstar cords and I like them a lot (though I had to size up a full size and they stretch some)

  9. Both outfits look so very chic, LOVE how you styled the skinnies! Sometimes I'll wear my skinnies with neturals and when I'm feeling more bold, I'll pair them with another bright color. PS I love the fit of the Rockstar denim, I want one in every color!

    1. I was actually surprised I liked these, they looked super duper tight on the product models, but I went up two sizes and they're not legging tight, which is good!

  10. Okay, I just bought a pair of jeans in neon violet, so I definitely don't shy away from the bright skinnies.
I think you look fabulous in these and don't know what took you so long!! :)
Red is extremely versatile as far as colors go, in my opinion and both of these looks are totally fab. Cream, black and tan are all perfect pairings, but these would look great with navy, gray and even yellow.

  11. Those are adorable on you! I love them! You know me, I'm all about colored denim/cords! I recently paired my red AG's with a plum colored top and loved it! I recommend trying that color combo!

  12. I LOVE red skinnies! And they look good on you, too! IDK what you were so worried about :P
This past summer, I found a pair of skinny red capris and I had a lot of fun pairing them with pretty much anything I had: a simple white t-shirt, striped shirts, other bright colors, or my fav, simple black.

I'm on the lookout for more red skinny pants and maybe also purple :)

  13. Ooooh--I have red J Crew Minnies for some Christmas parties coming up! Thanks for the styling ideas! I held out a long time on the skinny trend (due to my "chicken legs"--big ol' thighs and skinny calves) but I have fortunately found there are some that are flattering.

You look fabulous in both! I especially love the Anthro jacket and the Paulinas!

    1. Also, I approve of the neutrals, but you might also try mint green or turquoise. I also think bright pink would be great but would require some intestinal fortitude (which we know you have!).

  14. Honestly I think you look fantastic in both of these looks! Even though I am not model-thin either, I have fully embraced skinny jeans. I have them in kelly green, army green, burgundy, and plain ole denim. They're my go-to's!

  15. Love these red skinnies on you! I love both outfits, but the first one with the blazer is my favorite. Black, white, and red is such a classic combo. Or you can go nautical and use navy blue. When you are feeling daring, you can pair the red with mint/turquoise or purple and yellow! Have fun with it!

  22. I TOTALLY feel the same as you. I was a "late bloomer" with skinny jeans and with colored denim. Now I can't get enough. I wore bright coral AG Stevies yesterday and blogged about them too. There must have been something in the air...
