It's pretty apparent that I do highlight my hair, but from these pics, honestly I didn't think it looked so orange in the daylight - and I even toned the images down a bit!
My first foray into hair highlighting was one of those at-home kits where you stick a horrible rubber skullcap on your head and then randomly pull hair through the tiny holes on the cap. Then you slather on whatever the hair lightening concoction is and pretty much wish for good luck. Alas I had none that time because I ended up with pretty convincing Tony the Tiger stripes.
After that bit of disaster, I leave my hair to the professionals I pay a lot of money to ... it really doesn't look so orangutan-hued in real life, I swear! I hope!
Jacket: Old Navy lightweight tie waist (same in camo, sim, sim)
Shirt: Madewell ex-boyfriend in buffalo plaid (check stores - sim tunic, petite)
Pants: Banana Republic factory (worn here - sim, sim)
Belt: J.Crew (sim, sim)
Necklace: Purple Peridot pennant (the original, sim, bolder)
Bracelets: F21 modernist layered, Yunikelley, Goody (sim), Betsey Johnson watch
Ring: F21 (sim)
Shoes: Seychelles via Anthropologie raine (sim-ish, solid, solid)
Bag: Fossil austin (worn here - sim, deal, steal)
I once did the skull cap pull highlights on this guy I liked in high school. It turned out horribly. He looked like a spotted cat. BUT, he asked me to, I flirted the whole time...and now he is my husband. So, it could not have been THAT awful. (But really, it was just hideous.) For some odd reason, he has never asked me to do anything to his hair again...
ReplyDeleteLove that necklace. Will have to check out purple peridot.
That's one way to snag a man, hehe!
DeleteHahaha, you're hilarious. I used to do my sisters highlights using those caps and she was always on me about getting really close to the scalp so it didn't look grown out. I remember the highlights were so severe and didn't blend in very well.
ReplyDeleteI love this outfit! I have always loved these shoes...and I need this shirt!
For me, they looked pretty horrible, for sure!
DeleteThe first thing that entranced me about your outfit was the buffalo check shit, of course (Me: sucker for anything remotely plaid) but then I got a gander at those shoes...girl, they are fab and fierce! And they're Seychelles, which makes me love them even more. Your style is so well-curated, I can't stand it! ;p

I adore Seychelles shoes - plus they always have a sturdy heel (i.e., comfy!)
DeleteI've had way too many bad hair experiences...and it doesn't help that my hair texture sucks to begin with! You look adorable!
ReplyDeleteWhat are those strange green things behind you!? Oh - those are trees. Not surrounded by snow. Completely jealous! And those skullcaps were the worst! My best friend's sister pinned me down once and forced tiny chunks of hair through the pinholes in that thing, possibly ripping out half of my hair in the process. While pricey, I agree that the last decade of professional highlights has definitely been worth the cost (and MUCH less traumatizing - haha!).
ReplyDeleteCheers!

Pulling hair through the tiny holes in the skullcaps was the worst! I used a knitting needle and Ow!
DeleteI don't highlight my hair, and I definitely see some reddish streaks in it when i'm I'm in the sun. I think it looks good! Love the shoes, the necklace, and the lip colour...Clinique Black Honey again?
ReplyDeleteMm, actually I don't remember the shade of lipstick - though most of my colors are pretty sim, usually some form of nude!
Deletei love your hair colour. this outfit is really adorable! xo
ReplyDeleteYou made me smile at the "orang-utan like colour" because i can actually picture that !
ReplyDeleteMy hair … lets not get into it.
Your hair always looks great! The hue is pretty.
ReplyDeleteThose shoes are killer! I want them!

I've never attempted to highlight my hair myself but I have dyed it which didn't always work out so well! The salon always knows best :)

I agree! Salon always.
DeleteI serious love this outfit! The plaid shirt with the tie waist belt jacket.
ReplyDeleteYour hair really dont look that orange. It look more like a light brown. But nonetheless, it looks good on you! And i always leave my hair to professionals. Afraid I will damage my hair myself.

I used to highlight my hair like that. Now with my hair red I can't be bothered with the hassle.
ReplyDeleteI am really in love with this outfit. Classy effortless chic with a twist.

ooooh Lisa I love the checked shirt with the necklaces and jeans!
ReplyDeleteI actually just started getting my hair colored in November (greys, boo), but I get it done professionally. It was really important to me to stay as close as possible to my natrual auburn coloring that I just let somebody who knows what they are doing do it =) Love this casual outfit.
ReplyDeleteI should have just colored my hair after that first fiasco, but I always afraid to do anything further to make my hair worse!
DeleteAfter listening to the horror in my cousin's rant on boxed hair dyes (she's a hairdresser), I will never touch the stuff again. I am with you--leave it to the pros! I love the stripes today and I think your hair looks great--not as orange as you think.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm never doing my own color again!
DeleteGreat look! Any kind of navy gingham/plaid is my absolute FAVE.
ReplyDeleteI remember those highlighting kits. My friends & I used to have hair nights in college & we'd all use those on each others hair. It never turned out quite like we hoped but still made for fun girls' nights :-)
My hair also looks orangey-red in the sun. I have been every color from very blonde to a dark brown. My relationship with my hair is a sometime tense once. We're getting along right now though. :-) You look so cute, as always!
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine what I would do to my hair if I tried highlighting it at home. I leave that to the professionals...it doesn't hurt that my girlfriend is a hair dresser and it's always a great time to get my hair done. Love this outfit -looking great as you always do!

Don't try it, hehe!
DeleteWe would never have thought your hair looked orange. You are your own worst critic. As with all women.
ReplyDeleteLooking. Nice. Great shoes.. (I have been away for a bit... Too busy. But I will make up.)

I know, aren't we all? ;o)
DeleteWhich is the reason I ask myself at least once a month: "why am I blogging? Why?"
DeleteThis is such a nice casual outfit! :)
ReplyDeleteI once had my hair highlighted and they used the wrong amount of product or something - they had to re-dye over the top to try make it look better. First and last time for highlights! But hair grows out again :)

Lisa,
ReplyDeleteI love your gingham check and cargo combo! I also love the color blocked heels, just the right touch of glam and visual interest. I have the same problem with my photos, my hair looks like different shades depending on the light, as do my eyes! You look great, Happy weekend!

Love this outfit!
ReplyDeleteYour hair doesn't look orange! It looks sun-kissed and pretty.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I remember those skullcaps. Back in college I used to do the skullcap routine for my roommate every month. Her hair was really short so it was pretty easy and even fun. But on my long hair it was a horribly tangled mess.
Great outfit! Love those those shoes!
xo,cynthia
I had long hair at the time and it was a mess. Little chunks, big chunks, it was a chunky fried mess.
DeleteYour hair does NOT look orange! It looks quite pretty.
ReplyDeleteI've never colored my hair, mostly because I'm cheap. If I ever did color it, I would go red!
Your highlights look pretty. But I know what you mean -- my highlights can start to look "brassy" after awhile. Using Clairol Shimmer Lights helps (I don't know if it's just for blond hair, though) either the shampoo or conditioner. My first highlighting attempt was similar to yours, only there was no cap, just painting with a brush, which my sister did, and she thought it was so funny when it was done. (Not me, though!). It was a disaster with huge orangey stripes all over my head
ReplyDeleteI do all over color, so it's not so bad. But when it comes to hi lights and lo lights, definitely leave it to the professionals. hahaha love your outfit lisa. looks fab.

I think your highlights look nice! Much better than my 2 inch roots! I love how you accessorized this outfit! The bling is all so pretty and definitely elevates the whole look!
ReplyDeleteI've never tried to dye my hair, I'm sure it would be equally disastrous!
ReplyDeleteLove the gingham with the army jacket, it's a great mix.
Chic on the Cheap
If you ever home highlight again go to Sallys and get a post dye treatment called "get the red out." It will take the red tones out of your highlights so they are truer to the color you like and less brassy/orange.
