It feels like everyone's got the flu or some sort of severe cold lately. And I am scared, because I've been putting off the throat tingle and sniffly nose for the past two weeks now with a combination of hot tea, copious amounts of vitamin C and sheer will (got a big biz trip and meeting coming up - Can't. Be. Sick.).
If I keep going-going-going, I will make it - at least until after the trip. Because once I stop ... wheez, cough, hack. That'll be it for me.
As a sick person, things are not pretty for me. About the same time the red chafed nose appears, so does the terrible under-eye circles, the acne (why?!), the general malaise coupled with an uncontrollable urge to eat pretty much every single thing - except the fruits and vegetables - in my kitchen despite having no appetite. And general cleanliness will go right out the window. I will be wallowing in pretty much the same set of fleece jammies layered under an over-sized sweatshirt and Ugg boots for about the duration.
(I know, getting a cold is glam style blogger business, isn't it? And sure, I could've just written "I am starting to feel sick," but I've got to put my literal arts degree to good use every now and again, don't I? So what's the take-away here? When I get sick, best to just Nyquil my ass out).
Do you ladies have any tips for staying healthy during the height of flu season? And if you do get sick, what makes you feel the most comfortable?
Jacket: J.Crew Robert Noble herringbone (worn here - sim, sim)
Top: Fei by Anthropologie button-down cowl (worn here - sim, sim, long-sleeved)
Skirt: Tabitha by Anthropologie olmeda (sim, black/purple, tiered, pricey)
Tights: Anne Klein
Necklace: C.Wonder square stone (sim, sim)
Ring: BR (sim, sim, deco)
Boots: Vince Camuto bronco (worn here - sim, sim, sim)
Since I've been traveling a lot, I've been using a lot of anti-bacterial wipes and gel. I've also been taking emergen-C packets for a boost in my vitamin C. I suppose getting the flu shot would be the best course of action, but I've been putting it off. When I do get sick, I'm usually pretty comfortable after downing a bottle NyQuil and eating several bowls of pho and getting some sleep. I hope that you feel better soon.
ReplyDeleteMoody Girl In Style
I don't know about the flu shot - last couple of times I got it, I also got the flu. This year, no shot, and so far (knock on wood!) I've been healthy (ish). ;o)
DeleteBeautiful skirt! At first I thought it was JCrew but nevertheless, it is gorgeous! I hope you get better soon, infact I have been with a little stuffy nose myself but with a lot of tea, I should be ok :)

That skirt is gorgeous. Looks great!
ReplyDeleteMy tricks to keeping flu-free (which has been more or less successful the past few weeks while everyone drops like flies around me) are lots of garlic, hot honey and lemon (actual honey and fresh lemon juice), chicken soup, and fresh ginger tea (real ginger root boiled).
What a lovely outfit! Beautiful skirt! It's the same here - we keep hearing of entire families down with flu for days - I'm just hoping we can keep it at bay until my daughter's big & expensive birthday party this weekend. Worried about the sniffles and throat tickles I've been feeling. Generally when I sense something coming on, I try to drink herbal teas (lemon & ginger for preference, even though I'd much rather have a coffee), rest as much as I can and take probiotic tablets. I'd mistakenly thought that doctors advise you to take paracetamol during flu to keep the aches and fever down, but apparently it actually helps you fight the flu too. I also always have some or all of these 'booboo' food in stock during winter - 7 up, my favourite crackers Doriano, spicy chicken or vegetable stews in the freezer, honey etc. I also believe I managed to repel sinusitis once just with a hot & spicy chicken soup alone(if you'd like the recipe I'd be happy to share). And yes, I too cannot stand to eat fresh vegetables or fruits during a flu - why is that I wonder? I crave carbs (particularly potatoes) & chicken when I'm sick.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea to stock up on comfort sick good "just in case"! Last thing anyone wants to do when they are sick is to have to go out and run an errand!
DeleteVery nice outfit, I like the mix of textures. I have the flu jab (I have to as I have MS but I think even if I didn't I would have the jab as I have been very very ill with it in the past before my diagnosis and me needing to have it) but sleep is really the best cure all, not always a practical thing to do I know when you are so busy but it really helps your body to heal. Also lots of vitamin C as you say and garlic helps too (as do chillies). Lots of herbal teas and carb laden foods to give your body the energy to heal.
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't fall ill!!

My mom swears by eating raw garlic when she starts feeling her throat tingling - I think it does work, but I don't think my officemates would appreciate it, hehe!
DeleteThe print on your skirt is just stunning...I love the bold colors!
ReplyDeleteAs you know, my hubby is getting over the flu. I've been taking vitamins, chugging OJ, and washing my hands/using hand sanitizer like crazy. My co-worker is a nurse and she recommended taking Vitamin C pills to speed up the process. I think chicken soup is really the best medicine! Hope you can ward off the germs!

Hot soup is so soothing, even though you most likely won't be able to taste it if you're sick - but something magical about chicken soup!
DeleteLove how colorful your skirt is. Perfect paired with you shirt. Vibrant colors make people happy :)
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I feel a tingling feeling for my throat, I take a few Cold FX pills, sometimes echinacea pills. If those don't work within hours, I would drink some hot water with honey and lemon, and add some ginger.
I've avoided getting sick this season, even with a husband who got sick! I stay SUPER SUPER mindful about my hands touching my mouth/nose/eyes. I pretty much just don't touch my face or eat/drink without washing my hands first. I wash my hands like a maniac at the gym, at work, out and about.. My hands are constantly dry from all the washing, but it's working for me! Whenever someone around me is sick or I'm beginning to feel a symptom, I load up on water and Vitamin C. Works for me!
ReplyDeleteI love this outfit! That blue is so gorgeous, and that skirt is so unique! Of course.. it's Anthro! :)
this outfit is perfect. love love love that skirt. it is so wonderful.
ReplyDeleteas for the getting sick thing, hmmm i normally am able to avoid the flu by just avoiding people. i think the best thing for when you get sick is just take one day to recover yourself, just sleep it off, that always helps me.
K
fingers crossed we don't get sick!
I always love that you wear the brightest fun skirts. One thing I hate about winter...more sick people. UGH
ReplyDeleteI hope that you stay well. I have been fortunate to not have gotten sick yet this year, and I hope it stays that way!
ReplyDeletezicam is amazing if you start taking it the second you feel sick! after that, i'm a nyquil girl all the way...
ReplyDeletep.s. love that skirt!
Lots of water and tea seem to help me feel better! My husband and dad swear by Airborne too - especially if you will be flying or in close quarters with people who are sick. I hope you stay well!!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the pattern of the skirt!
I eat like 5 cuties a day...obsessed with them. However, I'm crediting how well I feel and no cold this season to all of the vitamin C I'm taking in! :) Stay well...everyone I know that has gotten this flu has been out of commission for like a week, if not longer! It's horrid.
ReplyDeleteI am totally taking tons of vitamin C and I am convinced that is why I am not sick yet!
DeleteCUTE. I was sick a couple of weeks ago. Stay strong and drink your orange juice!!
ReplyDeletethat skirt is nothing shy of amazing. the colors are so vibrant!
ReplyDeleteonce i start feeling bad i get some zicam. i also start doing the emergenc 4 times a day and drinking nothing but water and tea as well as trying to get as much sleep as i can. i hear ya - i had it last week. :(
I'll blame my blog friends if I end up getting sick, hehe.
DeleteI adore your blouse and skirt combo. The colors are so fabulous together!
ReplyDeleteOh no! I hope you don't get sick. There's nothing worst than being sick on the road. I used to sit in the bathroom with the hot shower running to ease the congestion that prevented me from falling asleep. :(
To avoid getting sick I bundle up, take meds, and get lots of sleep. I wash my hands religiously and drink lots of fluids. Feel better soon!! xoxo, Phoebe
First of all that skirt is GORGEOUS on you! In love!
ReplyDeleteI always get a flu shot because I'm THAT girl that will undoubtedly get the flu the one year I don't get the shot. But aside from that - I try to just wash my hands as much as possible during the day.
Hope you feel better, soon!
Morgan
seemomogo.blogspot.com
I'm convinced the flu shot is what has kept me healthy so far. But like you, I am terrified of catching this flu that seems to be going around. And apparently it's the stomach flu, the worst of all of the sicknesses. Keep pumping the vitamin C!
ReplyDeleteI love this skirt. It's perfect for the winter styled just like you've done here and I think in the summer would be perfect with a white v-neck tee and some cute loafers. Yes, I'm already thinking about summer!!
It's been cold in the SE lately - like regular winter weather. I can't wait for summer either!
DeleteFirst off, super cute outfit! I'm loving the mixture of the skirt with the top and blazer. Just darling!!!
ReplyDeleteAs for being sick, I always down 2 glasses of orange juice a day! Seriously one in the morning and one when I get home from work in the evening. It's yummy, refreshing and I swear has been working for me. Plus I use hand sanitizer everywhere when I can't get to a restroom to wash my hands. But when I do get sick, I get the whole nine yards like you! Watery red eyes, stuffy pink nose, acne!! Why acne? I have no idea?!.
Good luck on your trip! And stay healthy!
Happy Wednesday!
Redheaded Daybook
I carry hand sanitizers around like I'm neurotic (well I am) and I'm bleaching the crap out of everything. People are dropping like flies from the flu at work so I cracked a window and don't care if I'm freezing. The germs aren't gonna stick on me! I hope you don't get sick! i LOVE that skirt!
ReplyDeleteI have green apple scented hand sanitizer in my purse right now!
Deleteperfect look and great skirt ♥
ReplyDeletelooove that outfit on you!! ive been really paranoid about getting sick too--trying to wash my hands constantly, not go out to eat/coffee shops too much, and keep my hands away from my face even though I'm a compulsive face toucher. : )
ReplyDeleteAnother blogger felt she was coming down with something so she piled on extra accessories : ) Might work, might not, either way you look hot (and not as in fever hot LOL ).
ReplyDeletebisous
Suzanne
Haha, I love that!
DeleteSuch a pretty skirt - and blue finger nails! Awesomes.
ReplyDeleteTips for not getting the flu. Hmmmm, for years I've tried to patent a decorative Lysol spray on a pendant, but no one's going for this idea yet. So I'm left with go a little OCD with the sanitizing wipes at grocery stores and discreetly edge all of your scarves up to eye level. Like a surgical mask, but more stylish.
Hope you stay well, Lisa.
I had a co-worker who used to carry around a little foaming spray can of hand sanitizer on his keychain - and considering it is flu season, that is totally not OCD!
DeleteI absolutely LOVE the print on this skirt! So gorgeous.

I take theflu shot every year but hate medications in general, so I'll suffer through illnesses. I hope you feel better, and that skirt is beautiful!

I'm petrified of getting the flu as I'm going on vacation in two days and I don't wanna be sick (knock on wood). I love this skirt - it's so fun and bright and the print 'fits' your body really well if that makes any sense at all!

Ooh, holiday - lucky girl!
DeleteWash your hands, wash your hands, and then wash your hands. I think I read that the average person touches their face hundreds of times during the day without even realizing it. So let's say you just walked into your office building. Means you probably had to use a few doors and maybe touch an elevator button. Yikes! Go wash those hands!!
ReplyDeleteI don't really believe in flu shots. I'm thinking there are only about 9,9999,999,999 different viruses out there. What are the chances your flu shot is gonna get the ones that are coming your way this season?
If I do get a cold, I try to pretend I'm not sick. I even force myself to run. I figure I'll sweat the darn thing out!
I am a total eye rubber (too many mascara trails to note) - so I've totally been washing my hands like a mad person lately!
DeleteWell you know I'm still getting over my sickness! How's the bf doing? Did he make it home? Airborne usually works for me to keep sickness away but it snuck up on me this year. And I'm all about sweats & bad daytime tv to keep me comfy while I'm getting through it.
ReplyDeleteSending healthy vibes your way!!
Sweet warm sweats ...
Deletefabulous skirt lisa. some people don't like this, but it works. LISTERINE! gargle with it everyday and sip a little and swallow. also dial white antibacterial soap! the surgeon recommended it for my mom's surgery, now i use it. both together work wonders. and of course drinking tea.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.averysweetblog.com/
That reminds me of my dad, who swears by gargling with salt whenever he had a sore throat.
DeleteI love the print on your skirt! I hope you don't get sick. I have the worst immune system and get sick if I even see someone sniffle miles away :-(
ReplyDeleteI swear by Airborne. Even if I'm already sick I'll supplement any cold meds with a daily dose of Airborne. And hot tea, lots of hot tea.
ReplyDeleteI am crazy for your skirt, the print is gorgeous!
Inge
thisevolvinglife.blogspot.com
I used to take Airborne, but I can't stand drinking that stuff anymore - it foams a bit and leaves this bubbly gunk on the glass. But I agree, it totally works - it's like a vitamin bomb!
Deletemy husband swears by cold-Fx. it's the first thing he feeds me when i start getting sniffles.
ReplyDeleteyou look fantastic. i hope you steer clear of a cold/flu!! xox P
phiphi's blog
mmm...I love me some salty plain potato chips when I'm sick (well, all of the time, but they also make me feel better when I'm sick!) That and the cheapest no-name cold fx I can find- I don't believe in it enough to buy the $$ stuff, but I'll cover my bases anyway!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love the skirt m'dear!
I don't know if Nyquil works well or not, but it sure knocks me out!
DeleteLisa,
ReplyDeleteEvery now and then when I pop in to read your post I always find it fun and very enjonyable...since you are so down to earth with what you wrote. so thank you.
ok, now on to the flu and cold and all the cruds during winter....
---trying as hard as you can to try not to get sick, that mean prevention, prevention. get flu vaccine in the late fall, cleaning your hands (wash, alcohol gel/wipes) between contacts. sound rediculous but you don't want to know where the the other person hand has been, do you? and stay away from people who are sick, well at least try minimize contact. if you have to get close then hand the sick person a mask or something so they don't sneeze or spread germs to you. now is not the time to get cozy with them.
---get adequate sleep, 8 hr or so to make sure your body is rested and immune system in tip to shape
if you unfortunately get sick, don't loose heart.
---rest up... sleep as much as you can to allow your body to recoup.
---drink plenty of fluids (water, gaterade, camomile tea with honey as needed for cough relief and cold symptoms relief)
---eat easy digestable food. soups type, pho is great; and if you crave something go for it. jello is a fine snack. try to avoid heavy laden fat stuff since it will make you feel bloated and want to vomit
---watching some old movies is a great way to pass time when you can't sleep anymore
---be kind to your body. don't stress out. cold typically takes 7-10 days to go away. flu takes more like 2-3 weeks before you feel like a person again. by day 7 you should start feeling slightly better.
---when you are sick, do your colleauges a favor and stay away, wipes the things you touch (phone, keyboard, etc) so you don't spread the germs.
---so really, being sick is no fun but it is a great time to just be a kid again and be a "little" needy to your significant other. hey, who wouldn't want to see a guy trying to be a nurse, right?
---well, you can take the extra whatever the vitmain letter you want but i typically just either eat some oranges, drink gaterade or may be try a few gumyy bear vitamin c but was never too crazy about those things about vitaminc c loading; a virus will just do it thing and then leave me alone after a period of time and those anecdotal things is more psychological, i think.
hope you won't get sick this season.
mary
Thanks for all your tips, Mary! I do totally not like those people who are sick are heck but still "soldier on" and come to the office - dude, you can work from home if you've got that much to do!
DeleteI was fighting it but once I started coughing that was it. I've had a cold for a week and I hate it!
ReplyDeleteLots of tea with honey, cough medicine, cough drops, Vicks smeared on my throat. I'll try anything right now not to be sick.
Love your outfit, as always!
Hope you do not get sick. Keep fighting!!
I'm in the same boat as you. I think all my coworkers have already been through two rounds of colds this winter and I just keep downing tons of vitamen c and praying.
ReplyDeleteJust a few more months and we are in the clear! (I hope - I've been sick on mothers day like half a dozen times)
Love this pencil skirt by the way!!
Chic on the Cheap
I went to the rental car counter the other day, and the person helping me coughed into his hand (he was coughing quite a bit) and then handed me the rental keys. Gee ... thanks.
DeleteLove the skirt! Such a great print.
ReplyDeleteDrink lots and lots of hot tea (with lemon and honey is the best for your body). A close substitute is Emergen-C (powder to mix with water-- tons of vitamins, including the ones that make you feel good). However, it says on the Emergen-C box to have 1-2 a day, but you can (and should) have as much hot tea as you can! Also, avoid sugar (it's bad for your immune system when it's down). Lemon will provide the Vitamin C for you that orange juice will, but sans the calories.
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better soon!
I never knew that about sugar, thanks for the info!
DeleteI love the great print of this skirt

So true, everyone is getting sick. Anywho, i really love the blue top and the bottom piece. That blue is really eye catching. What i love about that skirt is the print on the skirt. Its really different from so many prints i have seen. And i really like unique pieces!
ReplyDelete5ftandpetite.blogspot.com
I have those halls vitamin c drops (basically candy) and I've been eating a bunch of oranges. And washing my hands a lot. Nothing else you can do except get a bubble.
ReplyDeleteThis skirt is awesome. Amazingly pretty. I just got back from Mexico and it reminds me a little of some of the patterns I saw there.
To be completely germ-free, I could be like "Bubble Boy!"
Deleteyou are amazing!!!! i love the prints and i wish i could wear prints like that.
ReplyDeleteway rad.

I have the worst immune system! I'm always sick! I wash my hands like a trillion times a day...yet I still catch everything! I've heard honey and cinnamon helps? You should google it! Btw what a gorgeous skirt to knock the sick right out of you:)! Feel better darlin!
ReplyDeleteAw no, that sucks! YOU stay healthy! I hear spoonfuls of honey is supposed to help a sore throat.
Deleteyou look great ! love your necklace !
ReplyDeleteI'm obsessed with that skirt - the pattern is just gorgeous! Hope you don't get sick; I've unfortunately been under the weather but trying to drink lots of tea and rest!
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks so much, Ginny, I'm flattered!
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteOoh India, that's so exotic and exciting - I'm jealous!
ReplyDeleteHi Lisa,
ReplyDeletehopefully you managed your flu.I wish you everything good!
During the whole year, but especially in winter I take vitamin suplies. What helps me the most thoug is making sure that by every single meal I eat some fruits and vegetables, plus taking long walks.
You know I thought many times that I really like your writing and that probably you have a degree in literal arts :).
Nice outfit.Keep up the good work...
XO
I'm lucky, because I rarely get colds. I think it's because I eat a lot of veggies and fruit all year round. And garlic, I love garlic actually :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I love your skirt! Gorgeous!!
I wish i had the secret! for me, laying in bed does the trick -oh and a lot of soup.
ReplyDeleteI am totally in love with your skirt !
1. That skirt is AMAZING. You always have the best pieces!
ReplyDelete2. I usually get sick once or twice a winter. I do get the flu shot so that helps, and whatever I get usually only lasts a couple of days but it's no bueno either way. STAY HEALTHY LADY!
