Classic Navy Dots ... Snip, Snip

classic navy dots

My bangs have been getting a little too long for my liking lately, so of course I did the natural thing and cut them myself.  I pretty much grabbed a fistful of wet bang hair, twisted it up (I saw that somewhere some time ago, apparently it's the thing to do?) and snipped. Took about two seconds to do.

And now ... well, you know the old saying about "measuring twice, cutting once?" These pics you see here are pre-bang massacre, the ones I have now are above my brows and have a tendency to get stand-up crazy after a night's sleep because the hair is likely still in shock from the sudden slashing.

Hair grows back, I know. But it's like the second or third time I've done this to myself. So, at some point I'll learn, right? Happy June!

  3. Yes, hair grows back. Funny, our lives seem to be in synch again. I've been thinking of dying my hair and next week is my appointment but now I'm getting cold feet. I wonder if your story is a sign?

Regardless, super cute dress - I love the combo of green and blue here. Only you can get me out of my self-imposed no-shopping-in-the-summer clause. Argh! :D

    1. I do need to redo my highlights - using the whole "ombre look" excuse right now, hehe.

  4. I love the shoes you paired with this look. You are brave. I am too scared to cut my own hair. I am not sure what is worse, too short hair or dull, lifeless needs a cut hair...

  5. You are brave for cutting your own bangs! They look good and no one would ever know you did it yourself.

  6. Love the dress. What size do you order from lands end? Will help me with my order:)

    1. Hi Sana - On LE's knit dresses, I usually order one size down from my normal. I usually wear a 2/2P so on this dress I ordered a petite XXS. On their ponte knit dresses, I order my usual size, but typically I find their styles (at least in dresses and tops) to run a bit large. HTH!

  7. Greetings Lisa - I cut my own bangs most of the time because I don't have the time to go to the salon. I dry and curl the rest of my hair as usual, then pin it back while I trim my bangs "dry", so they don't spring up too short later. I've read about the twist method but never done it myself. I've included a post from The Small Things Blog on this - this blogger is a hairdresser and has an embedded YouTube tutorial in the post. Hopefully this is helpful to you! If the link doesn't work, just Google "The Small Things Blog Bangs" and that should lead you to the page. Good luck in the future! 8. That dress is so chic on you! When I had bangs I would cut them myself too. Then one day I got annoyed and decided I had to grow them out. Pretty sure I will never get bangs again!

  11. It used to take me forever to trim my own bangs because I was so scared and would only snip off the teensiest bit at a time. It'll grow back! Love this pretty dress!

  14. I cut my hair by myself all the time and mess up pretty much all the time, too. Thank goodness for bobby pins, hair ties, hats, and that solid fact that hair does grow back!

  15. I do that kind of stuff all the time! I can't wait for my appointments! I am sure you still look gorgeous as ever!

  16. I do that all the time--and I've heard of the twisting trick too. I love this dress!

  17. What a marvellous dress - and I have gone through the bang situation.
Once many years ago my grandmother cut them for me, she cut an eyebrow. End of story - yours cannot be worst than mine.

  18. Such a gorgeous dress.

I've done that so many times it isn't even funny. Now though, with my really straight short bangs it is dangerous. I try my best to wait for the hairdresser.

  19. I have been doing this exact same thing to my bangs for the past 30 years. Seriously. I twist them when they are wet and cut. And it never works! At this point, I do not think I will ever learn.
Love the dress and the navy with green!

  21. Every time I cut my bangs, I promise myself I will never do it again. Hairdressers have been known to go too short too, which I call dork short. A few months ago when the hairdresser cut my bangs above the eyebrows or dork short, I took my hair straightener and pulled my bangs down, flattening them and it did wonders. You could try that, but be extra careful with burning your fingers. It just takes a little practice.
    Have a nice evening,

  23. Agh! I cut my bangs once and then never tried to do them myself again.

Love your dress. There's something about green and navy that is just awesome.

  24. Gorgeous dress! I love navy and green together. I am in desperate need of a hair cut, and I have contemplated once or twice doing it myself. I find that it's best to leave it to professionals!

  25. I have that dress and love it so much! I'm pretty sure the first time I saw it was on a link from your blog, so thanks for introducing me to it. I have been pairing it with red and navy, but I love that coral.

I have also been a victim of mangled bangs. They do always grown back, but those few weeks before they are long enough again can be challenging times for hair styling.

  26. I for one have never raised a scissor to my hair (save for my OCD tendencies of snipping split ends off) and half the time I don't even trust hair stylists to cut it. But like you said, hair grows back, I'm sure they will be fine in no time.
Love the green and navy dress, it's so cute!

  30. I got a tip for ya homie! When you do the twist thing, cut a third LOWER than you think, and don't actually cut. Gently use one blade of the scissors to razor the hair. You'll love it, it'll give you side swept wispie bangs.

  31. Haha! I snip snip my own hair once in a while too. Definitely cut less than you first think you should and you can always snip more later.

  32. my hairdresser gets so angry at me whenever i try to chop my own bangs. she finally gave up and told me how to do it at home if i couldn't deal with it! i hold the scissors vertically and snip a wee bit at a time.

i love this dress on you! xo

  35. Great dress, I need to check out Land's End!
Also, I can't believe you were brave enough to cut your own hair...I'm terrified of screwing it up (I KNOW I would screw it up), so I couldn't...
