Respect the Outfits (the Forgotten)

We all have them. Deep in the dark recesses of our closets. The tangled, wrinkled masses, often still with their tags on. The shirts, skirts, dresses that we absorb into our wardrobe collective, left to accidentally be "discovered" once every few months as we rifle through our abundance - maybe every once in a while to be pulled out, considered, brows furrowed over, before being led back into the dark depths.

That's why in this Respect the Outfits reader post, we're featuring the closet Forgotten! A few brave souls reached into their closet depths and unearthed a few hidden treasures to share. Because all good clothes deserve their time to shine. Here are their stories ;o).

♠  Jen from vintageglammz - I got the Tatting Tank last October, on sale. This was part of the reason why I got it. I also found the colour to be versatile and the crocheted knit details very feminine which could easily be incorporated into my working wardrobe as well as for the weekend. As for the heart shaped sunnies, I consider them a novelty and fun piece and will only wear them on the weekend and when I'm on a seaside vacation. I got them for their too-cool-for-school appeal.

Shoes: Payless Shoes US / Sunnies: Paddy's Markets Sydney

♠  Lisa from Confessions of a Call Center Gal - My Anthro Thousand Island Skirt does not get enough attention 'coz I'm afraid it's a little too short for my age. I don't wanna prance around looking like a cougar dressed as a cub!

Top - Target / Skirt - Anthro Thousand Island (Summer 2009) / Shoes - Anthro Hallowed Halls Oxfords /
Tights - Anthro / Belt - Anthro Snakebite belt

♠  Laura from Anthro Closet Chaos: I pulled this Dress and Sweater from my closet and planned to sell them. The Dress is dreaded Rayon. I didn't care for the see through net bodice or the tiny flower print. And the waist is elastic. Ehh! The Sweater is a little to Orange-Pink for my liking. I don't like ties around my waist. Besides, a long sweater without sleeves makes no sense. Both purchased on sale. Both more than a year old. Both worn only once. Not together! Both languishing in my closet wasting precious space. Neither getting much love or attention. To this day I have no idea what I was thinking when I ordered them. If I had an Anthro near me, I would not have left the store with either item. I couldn't return them to online since I had actually worn them. I proceeded to put them on. Dress first to see if it fit. Then the sweater. And whalla! It was a match made in Heaven. Quite by accident!

♠  Lisa from Sweet Laundry Loves: There are two items that I am wearing that don't get enough love. The first is the blazer, and I originally bought it as a light "jacket" to wear in the fall. I find that I'm not wearing it much in the winter because I usually grab sweaters to stay warm, and the blazer under the winter coat can be a bit uncomfortable at times. My other problem with this blazer is that I only know how to wear it with pants and have no idea how I would style it with a dress or a skirt. The second item is the skinny jeans. I bought these jeans in 2009 and haven't worn them within the past year since I discovered the comfort and stretch of the jegging. However, the quality of my jeggings are starting to fade, so I've decided to bring back the skinny jean.

Blazer: Urban Outfitters / Shirt, Necklace: H&M / Jeans: Fidelity Denim/ Earrings: Anthropologie

♠  JG from Stuff Jewish Girls Like: I'm wearing my Interpretation Chemise. It hasn't been getting a whole lot of love from me because even though I think it works perfectly fine as a dress, I feel kind of strange wearing it outside and knowing that it was originally meant to be nightwear. I end up wearing it just to lounge around my apartment. It's a shame, too, because this little frock is too pretty to just sit at home! I need to give it more outdoors love.

I originally bought this cardigan after seeing Kim rock it, but this is the first time I've worn it after it got lost in the black depths of my closet. I don't know why I've waited so long now - this cardi is so pretty and easy - good thing Target online still hase a bunch of colors on super-sale because I am tempted to get more. As for the top and necklace - they are both more summery pieces that haven't gotten enough love at all. Who is to say you can only wear certain pieces during certain times of the year? Apparently me - mentally to myself, but not anymore!

  1. Such cute photos! I love the lace cardigan you're wearing. I wish Canada hard Target - there seems to be so many great shoes and clothes there for cheap. Cute idea for reader outfits :)

  2. Oh *headdesk* I totally forgot to send my forgotten picture to you! So sorry, Lisa! Ugh, I'm so lazy this week! But I love this idea, very creative!! Everyone looks just beautiful in their "forgotten treasures"! I'm so ashamed that I didn't include my little shirt!

  3. The forgotten... as in I totally forgot to dig something out. Doh! At the moment I just keep shutting the doors on the mess that is my wardrobe. I think I need a day off work to sort it out :(

Anyway I think your lacey cardi is really cute, so hooray for having found it lurking in the depths!

  4. Lookit your puppy...awwww... Since I discovered Polyvore, I've become more organized and dedicated to plumbing the depths of my closet for seldom-loved items. Love the lace cardi on you!

  5. I love the forgotten pieces post! I meant to send you a pic, and totally forgot!
I am also glad you got that lace cardigan - it's SO versatile! I wear mine constnatly. I love it with your mint necklace! I already own the brown and white, but I'm thisclose to buying black too!

  6. Adore the lace cardi on you too! and thanks 4 hosting this fun post. And thanks 2 you, I dragged out my skirt that has been sitting in my closet 4 the last century and now I'm lovin it all over again. I think I need to dig thru my closet more often :)

  7. Great idea for a post! I have this shirt that I try on, no joke, once a week but never wear. There's something about it that just doesn't jive with me. Gonna give it another go....

  8. Great feature! I have so many forgottens... I'm working on going through them right now! LOVE the lace cardi on you. It's so classic.

  9. I love this feature!!! I totally intended to do this but as the week turned out I had no time!

  10. The Ones the Closet Forgot! Ahhhh! Hahaha! I love this idea, and seeing some of these things that these lovely ladies hadn't worn, I wonder why when all of these items are so beautiful? Hopefully, this is the start of a new era where clothes will no longer be neglected!

PS. I was going to send in something but then realized I had gotten too fat to squeeze into my forgotten item. Welp, back to being forgotten it goes, hahaha!

  11. Thank you for this feature! I actually have the same lace cardigan, but it doesn't get much wear here either. Frankly I'm a little unsure of how to wear it most days so I just leave it to hang!

  12. I love (laundry) Lisa's pieces! It's hard to believe that those ever got lost in the closet.

And (shoes) Lisa, your whole outfit is fantastic. Those shoes are perfect, and now I'm running off to Target.com to check out that great cardigan.

Then there's me in my shlubby loungewear. Hehe. Great outfits, all!

  13. You rock that cardi like no tomorrow Lisa!
    I love it!

  14. I always find that my forgotten pieces of clothing were impulse buys... I should learn. Should being the key word.

    Follow @UnraveldTreads on Twitter!

  15. Everyone looks great in their forgotten pieces! And your outfit reminds me that I have a forgotten Molded & Melded tee sitting in my closet!

  16. Lisa, I just love that necklace. I admired it online last summer but always managed to tell myself no. Looks beautiful on you!

  17. I know I'm not the only one who has said it, and I know I've said it a million times, but I wish Canada had Target too :(

Thanks for this feature Lisa. I'm going to make more of an effort to wear my forgotten pieces in the days to come.

  18. Thanks for this Lisa! Nice to see neglected items in the spotlight. I love your pretty lace cardi, it deserves to be worn out more often!
Oh and I just realised there are THREE Lisas mentioned in this post :-)

  19. WOW...I don't know why your piece is forgotten because it looks great on you!! This was a fun one. I love how you think of new themes for reader submissions. :) Keep it up.

  20. I love this post! What a great topic! I hope you do this again; I want to participate. :-)

    Call Me Ishmael

  21. Carly / Sweet Laundry - oh no, no Target in Canada?! Do we call it even then that Canada has fresh clean air, an abundance of natural resources, gorgeous vistas and cities, friendly people, and the US has Target? ;o)

Closet Crisis - I love me some Polyvore fun, but I'm too lazy to find my outfit pieces!

Kim - I totally get why you love this cardi - I am pretty close to getting more myself, and they are cheap on Target online (probably even cheaper if you can find them instore!)

Lisa - Amen! I think we all need to shop our closets more!

amy kelinda - I thought January was the month that we all re-lose the weight we gained over the holidays? Funny how I think I lost a bit of weight in December and I am gaining it back (and then some!) in January!

vintageglammz - I feel like I'm in third grade again when there were two other Lisas in my class. I feel all warm and fuzzy inside!

Aw, thanks, Cindi. Sometimes I have too much time on my hands, haha!

  22. Lace can be a challenge to work with. I have a lace shirt that is see through. I suppose the ones that come with a layer beneath to make it opaque makes putting an outfit together easier. But the necklace and white top are great! The detailing on the white top is unique that it stands out : )

  23. With so many of us trying to shop our closets more this year, this reader outfit collection was a great reminder of the genius combinations that can arise when we try to look at older items with new eyes. Thanks for this great post, Lisa!

  24. Jen, I keep seeing you in my head wearing sunnies each week in different shapes and colors. Like Lucky Charms! Yellow Stars. Green Clover. Blue Diamonds. So cute.

Lisa of Confessions..., I'm old enough to be your Mother and I wear skirts much shorter. And I guarentee I'm no cougar. You should wear the skirt more often. Get a pretty tulle slip to let hang out the bottom for length.

I cheated! My post is old!

Lisa of Sweet Laundry..., But you did such a great job of styling it with the pants and striped top why worry.

JG, The chemise would make a great Sun Dress. Maybe with a little Yellow Cardi and Yellow Sandals in Spring. It doesn't look like it could withstand the snow storms right now.

Lisa, I love the Molded and Melded so much I ordered it in Black from a store. It came with the shoulder garnish unfinished and left hanging. I need to finish it or send it back. Love that Cardi seriously. I am discovering lace for the first time. The Minty Green in the Double Torsade Necklace perks your outfit up.

Thanks for putting this Readers Outfit Post together. So well organized. And only 5 submissions makes in a bit more intimate and easier to comment on everyone. Sorry I'm so late as usual.

    You Rock!

  25. everyone looks so great!! I really love lisa's look, but totally feel that pain of trying to squeeze a blazer under a winter coat.

random side, i sold that twisted torsade necklace for the exact reason of me only wearing it once!

  26. Oh my gosh, she is SO cute :) LOVE that style (and tattoo!!) I love camisole tops :)
