Green Chile Fronds

I "blame" Spiffy (from Where the Lights are Bright) for looking so darn great in her dress that I had to (virtually) run to Forever 21 to buy it immediately. So now I am the proud owner of this pretty (and cheap! but doesn't look it) dress - and I think I now also receive a year's subscription to Seventeen magazine, which should be a blazing finger in my face about Forever 21's target demographic and how I'm not it.

Dress: Forever 21 Frond Linen Blend (no longer online - check stores!)
Belt: Anthropologie City Safari (worn here and here before, and bunches before that)
Necklace: Anthropologie Nueva Granada (worn here and here before)
Shoes: Vince Camuto (worn here and here and here before)

On to more "my age" appropriate things. Yay for life's small victories - dinner last night turned out really well. I finally got a chance to make my creamy green chile chicken enchiladas and the BF loved them (which I am so glad, because I made enough for dinner for the rest of the week).

I don't have my original recipe for it, but it is very similar to this one - the main difference is that I rolled my filling into the tortillas instead of layering. And instead of cooking some chicken breast, I just bought a whole roasted chicken, removed the skin and shredded it - perfect amount for the recipe.

Food purists be warned though, this recipe is very Semi-Homemade Cooking with Sandra Lee-like in that it uses a bunch of convenience foods to make the sauce - but it is easy and soooo good and filling. And I added in some refried beans and made a cheater's version of Mexican rice for the sides. Carb heaven ...

Before ...

... and ooey-gooey goodness after.

And yummmmmm ...

Fade to carb-induced food coma.

Ignore nagging feeling that the Anthro Meeting Place tank that is finally shipping out to me
may not fit over my food baby.

  1. I love your dress! ha! I might have to buy that necklace if you don't stop wearing it! stop wearing it! Don't you just love finding something good at forever 21? It's like cheating and getting away with it or winning at a blackjack table or seeing a unicorn...
anyway those chiles look delish, yum.

  2. That dress looks really pretty and not inexpensive!:D Great find!:D

Sandra Lee is practical, her recipes are good when you are so on the go but still want to cook!:D

    Beauty. Fashion. Interior Design.
    & Life According to Marie.

  3. You look so stinkin' cute in that dress! And that belt ... I've had it on my wishlist for so long, and you're making me want to pull the trigger and buy it! So so cute! I'm glad to finally see someone wearing it!

And I love Semi-Homemade with Sandra Lee. As Marie mentioned, she's practical for people who are on the go but like to cook a decent meal (and who love a good cocktail!! HA!).

And might I say that your meal is making my tummy growl over here! Yum! :)

  4. Darling dress! F21 can have some non-21-yo-looking stuff...just have to search for it :)

Looks like you are getting some good use out of those fabulous sandals!

  5. I love that dress!!! Oh man, belted, too! It looks so much more luxurious that F21! The pattern is so pretty.

  6. For cruds sake, I think you ordered the day after me and I still don't have my Spiffy dress -WHINING - why is everything shipping to me so slooooooowly these days. It's killing me. The dress is equally adorable on you - it looks great belted.

And chicken enchiladas are one of my fave foods ever - your dinner looks mouth watering. YUM. Do honey lime enchiladas appeal to you? I have an easy recipe if you want it. Oh man, I need to make some soon. Like maybe tomorrow.

  7. that dress is AH-mazing. i ended up with teen vogue when i bought something from some teeny-bopper site. and, dirty little secret, i think i like it better than the grown-up version. at least, it's more accessible anyway.

  8. That dress is adorable! I haven't even dreamed at fitting into anything at Forever 21 since I was like 14 though. :( And the Safari Belt - love it. I really hope it hits sale soon because I kind of need it!

  9. yum yum yum
OMG I need to make this pronto!

And that yellow dress is so cheery :)

  10. That dress is so cute and I love how you styled it! And those enchiladas look delicious, I love anything with green chiles!

  11. love ur dress girl..really heart the pattern :D
so unique..and those food looks so yummy..make me feel so hungry when i read ur post..lol

anyway tks for leave comment in my blog, really appreciate it. i'm such a follower now, hope you can follow me back

    hug and kiss^^

  12. F21 cracks me up....like, I hate it SO much, but then every once in a while I find something awesome and I can't stop looking. It's like thrift shopping...only better? worse? I'm not sure. I want to get that belt so bad..........

  13. That dress is so cute on you! I can see why you ran to Forever 21 to buy it! And those enchiladas look AMAZING!!! I'm literally drooling over them and it's only 9am. YUM.

  14. I love that dress!!! It totally looks expensive!!! Those enchilada's look amazing and are making me hungry!

  15. Thanks for your comments, ladies. I'm glad that I'm not alone in being surprised at finding a really good buy at F21 every now and again. I've gone through too many "what the-?!" purchases with them so it is nice to see they are upping their style quotient ... and not making scandalously short dresses!

Thanks for your comments about my enchiladas too - I was especially proud of this recipe and glad it turned out. I admit, it is a total gut buster though!

Thanks for the dress inspiration, Spiffy!

Marie / Mandy - I know Sandra Lee gets a bunch of crap from "real chefs" but you're totally right. I don't have two hours just to prep my food - and Campbells soups make some good sauces!

Thanks, Eek - I'm getting used to my sandals but I sit am walking kind of awkward - guess I'm not good with the platform?

Thanks, Pamela - The dress totally looks like old school J Crew or Kate Spade, doesn't it? But it was only like $25, bwhaha haha ...

Aw, Jan, I hope you get your order in soon! Don't know if I just get things a wee bit quicker because I live in a hub airport city? Plus I think I'm not too far from the area UPS place. And did you say honey - lime - enchilada (i.e., three of my fave foods in the world)? Of course I'd be interested in trying a new recipe - thanks!

Aw, Kcookski, I would've preferred Teen Vogue. Back-to-school fashion, and what to do if you find your BF Tweeting another girl aren't really in my areas of interest.

Kathleen - I think F21 is getting more realistic with their sizing but a lot of their clothes are made for like 12yo gazelles!

    Thanks, Liz!

Thanks, Jessica - Hatch green chiles are the best if you can find them!

    Thanks so much, Queen D!

Haha, Ashley, I totally agree. Maybe F21 IS my version of thrifting ...

    Thanks so much, Valerie!

    Thanks, Tricia!

  16. Oh my gosh I love your dress. I would have raced over there too.

And on another note - I'm starving. That food looks amazing!!

  17. That dress is phenomenal! I can't believe it's from F21!

  18. OMG Lisa.. my mouth is watering... drooooooooooooool! I wish you invited me over for dinner last night.. Yum. :)

On another note.. that dress does look fab on you.. and definitely does not remind me of F21.... I'm turning 28 this month, does that mean I need to stop shopping at F21. I had this discussion with my BFF several months ago.. and we never came to an actual decision.. ha ha. I mean there are some pieces there that can totally translate into a more mature wardrobe.. you are clearly an example of that! :)

    Hope you're doing great!

    xx Love & Aloha
p.s. I have another fun giveaway going on, come enter!!

  19. Thanks for stopping by, Carrie!

    Thanks, Melanie!

Haha, Sharon, I kind of struggle with your problem too. I love the style at places like F21 or Urban Outfitters but I guess we gals just have to know how to edit ourselves!

  20. My dress is here, and I'm wearing it today - hooray!

Here is the recipe - it's super duper YUM! Let me know if you try it :)

    6 tablespoons honey
5 tablespoons lime juice (1 large lime)
    1 tablespoons chili powder
    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1 pound chicken, cooked and shredded (I used 3 small chicken breasts)
    8-10 flour tortillas
1 pound monterey jack cheese, shredded
    16 ounces green enchilada sauce
    1 cup heavy cream

Mix the first four ingredients and toss with shredded chicken. Let it marinate for at least 1/2 hour (I tossed mine together in a ziploc bag in the morning and let it sit in the refrigerator all day). Pour about 1/2 cup enchilada sauce on the bottom of a 9X13 baking pan. Fill flour tortillas with chicken and shredded cheese, saving about 1 cup of cheese to sprinkle on top of enchiladas. Mix the remaining enchilada sauce with the cream and leftover marinade. Pour sauce on top of the enchiladas and sprinkle with cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes until brown and crispy on top.

  21. cute outfit! i love, love ur anthro belt, especially the detailing! wow, ur enchiladas look amazing! i'm craving some now lol thanks again for dropping by my blog:) have a great weekend!

  22. Do you still have the tag with the item number so they can locate it at the store? That might help when trying to find it?

  23. Thanks so much for that recipe, Jan! OMG, that sounds so yum, I'm going to need to try it soon, thanks again!

Thanks for visiting, The Owl's Closet!

Hi Tracy - Thanks goodness I hadn't thrown my trash out yet, but I did unearth the dress tag! I think this is the item number 55985181012 - hope that helps anyone looking!

  24. Thank you! The item number makes all the difference in trying to find it.

  25. Your food just made me super hungry.
I just had lunch, mind you :)
I adore this look. The dress is fabulous and your paired it marvelously with that belt. I want it.
