Trench Transitions

spring neutrals spring neutrals

Winter isn't over yet, but temps have been positively spring-like these past few days - or maybe I've been feeling that way just because it hasn't been freezing-butt cold for more than 24 hours - so I broke out some of my transitional pieces, like this trench.

I've also decided to keep this outfit mostly neutral, and let my new favorite shoes do all the talking. I snagged these on winter clearance, so I am going to get as much wear out of them while I still can!

Check, Check

I'm kind of in a love-hate relationship with this vest. I always thought the colors and pattern were cute but was able to steer clear of it last year when J.Crew first released it ... because a gal only needs so many puffer vests, right?

Well then they re-released the same cute pattern this winter and threw in a promo - and add that to a gift card I already had - and well ... I caved. Even though I don't need another puffer vest ... and actually don't prefer the flap pockets and now-missing the two-way zipper of the redesigned vest (Factory still carries the older style puffer).

But the pattern got me. And the overall style is just the right kind of preppy-lumberjack I like. And of course the $%$%$% off. You've got me again, J.Crew, well played.

Field Mechanic

field mechanic jacket + red field mechanic jacket + red

This jacket kind makes me feel like I need to actually acquire proficiency in something "handy" - or just may get mistaken for a cast member from Freaks and Geeks - but my all-thumbs self adores it nonetheless. Paired with something a bit more girly and I really like the contrast in styles - prepare to see a lot more of me in this preppy-grunge-tastic this coming spring.

Carrying Casually

I'm a purse lover and I usually am drawn to more structured styles that work out perfectly for the office and travel, but sometimes looks a little stiff when paired with a more casual outfit. Since I work from the home office part of the time, some of my daily outfits are pretty relaxed, so running around town on errands in ripped jeans and a structured purse don't match together that well. So I've recently (over the last few months) added a few more laid-back satchels to my collection. Here are my more informal-yet-still-multi-functional additions to my purse collection:

Weekender

buffalo check + foley tote buffalo check + foley tote

Continuing on the easy, easy, easy style theme for me right now, so a few wardrobe basics let a standout coat and tote do all the work during the weekend. The colder the weather gets, the more I like to put together outfits that require minimal fuss and thinking (creative brain cells in hibernation right now, maybe?)

Tomboy Casual

My style this winter so far has definitely been veering towards easier, more casual. So fewer fussy skirt/sweater/shirt/layer-everything combinations and more undone pieces with an edge of tomboy. Simpler style just makes getting dressed on a cold morning easier and I can conserve my brain cells for more important things like how to decorate my dining room (finally ...) or just plain what to have for breakfast. This combo? Easy peasy pre-weekending attire.

Chunky Knits

I gotta love a cozy chunky knit sweater when the weather is chilly outside. Throw in a stretchy turtleneck underlayer and I'm more than ready for the cold. And this bag? A simply retro duffle of my dreams in a soft pebbled leather with a punchy hue. I'm all set.
