Juxtapositioning

blazer + jeans

So it's been a kind of an in-trend thing for a while now to pair more dressed up pieces with really casual ones. I do this kind of pairing a lot and really enjoy the mix (case in point, today's outfit). It's a little bit like dressing up the everyday, right? I think it's fun, stylish, plus it gets me more wear out of my wardrobe pieces.

But I have to admit, every time I'm putting on a baubly necklace over a camo tee or wearing stilettos with ripped jeans, a wee voice in my head kind of nips at me and asks me, "are we making any sense here?"

I call that voice Little Miss Overly-Sensible. Because when you think about it ... cargo pants and high heels? Really? In the same outfit? Girl ...

But shoot, style is about having fun with fashion, right? I probably shouldn't over-think it. But if anyone doesn't get it and asks, let's just say I dressed to go strutting down the lumber aisle.

  1. That scarf and top are so nice together! :)

I think mixing "fancy" and "casual" pieces is just a natural progression from mixing high priced and low priced items, fashion is funny like that, you can wear what you like as long as you are comfortable and happy - no matter if the mix would seem odd to someone else! :)

  2. "Little Miss Overly-Sensible"! Mwahahahaha! Thanks for my morning laugh, Lisa! I think you should tell Little Miss to stick it where the sun don't shine. I've firmed up my style schizophrenia similarly and I wouldn't have it any other way. Juxtaposition is the way to go and you do it so brilliantly! Love all these pieces together, btw, but I have to ask - does the scarf ever get in the way of real life just hanging there like that? Do you ever get the urge to just knot it and go?

    1. Not this particular scarf because it's light and short. Now those bigger long ones - the tassel-y parts just seem to get everywhere, I have a better appreciation for those circle scarves now.

  3. I like the mix of dressy and casual too, I think it's fun and I love your take here.

  4. Sensible. Ha. Sensible is for sensible people. I like my girly frocks, thank you very much! I actually feel like your style is very polished and "sensible." You just have fun with it by juxtaposing dressed up and dressed down, rugged and feminine. It keeps things interesting! I actually love the blazer with boyfriend jeans look. It looks relaxed but still put-together.

    1. Yeah, I think the only time I really dress "sensibly" is if I'm working out or going to do something "outdoorsy." Every other time, well, gotta get my money's worth on those skirts and heels, right?

  5. I think this looks great. I've basically accepted the look of slightly distressed jeans with most things and is a look I also enjoy. I can't get behind the really, really harsh juxtapositions though, like a flannel shirt and a chiffon skirt. Or Chucks with every thing.

    1. Grants flats are loads more comfy, but I do heels an awful lot. Gotta do what I can for being 5'2" hehe.

  6. I love mixing casual with dressier. It helps me take advantage of my nicer clothes and still keep it child friendly functional for me. Love the distressed jeans and heels.

  7. I love the look of jeans with a pair of heels or dressing up a casual top with a statement necklace. Certain things I can't understand though like a baseball cap with a fancier dress!

  8. I think my favorite outfit is jeans with a tee, blazer, and heels (although I don't own a single pair of ripped jeans & probably never will). I love wearing it to work or for going out on weekends but I always feels a little overdressed if I wear it for running errands on weekends.

I've been wondering, how's your working out going? Have you been consistent since you started talking about it awhile back? I'm just curious. I'm back on the horse trying to lose this baby weight & it's been slow going which is frustrating. I've never needed to lose this much weight before so it's been rough.

    1. I'm going to post about my routine tomorrow, thanks for the reminder. I think back to my college years and felt like the weight just fell off of me back then. Nowadays, going down like a pound or two is a cause for celebration!

  9. I have so many statement necklaces, but don't feel as comfortable mixing them with t shirts as I do wearing heels and ripped jeans. Why is that? I think it all depends on where you are going and what you'll be doing. Also, when I'm on vacation, I like to bring out all of my baubles and heels. I think it has something to do with getting out of the old regular life.

  10. Lisa, I love this entire outfit. It's totally something that I would want to wear myself so thank you so much for the inspiration! (And now I totally need ripped jeans....lol)

  11. Haha, too funny! I think it definitely works, but I know what you mean! And, I once went to Home Depot after a date night, and I was super dressed up...I got a lot of funny looks!

  12. I do love this look but haven't been able to pull it off myself since I have been giving up on high heels and flats don't really seem to dress up the jeans enough.

  17. I'm a big fan of juxtaposition when it comes to fashion--dressy/casual, girly/masculine, fitted/drapey. It all works in my book!
    Accordingly, I love this look!

  18. I wear blazers with my jeans all the time and love the way it looks so love your look today. I probably will never sign on to the ripped jeans look (unless I've worn them out myself) and with two bad knees I can't do the high heels but I love wearing dressier flats and booties with my jeans and blazer. And thanks for showing the Lands End blue and green dress the other day. I picked one up too and wore it tonight (with a blazer naturally) and got several complements on it. That is always nice to hear plus when it is a reasonable priced dress and easy to wash and wear that makes it even better!

    1. I adore the LE knit dresses - I think they come in pretty prints, they're reasonably priced, but they're knit so they're so comfy! Plus who can beat their return policy!

  19. Sometimes I think that the most fashionable people get up and blindly grab stuff out of their closet...

I like a bit of juxtaposition to break things up and keep things from getting boring. I think your outfit makes perfect sense!

  26. I find as I have gotten older, it's better if I mix the dressier with the casual. Unless it's a dressier occasion, I would look too stuffy in a suit. I have a collection of suits because I have always loved the look, but I then realized that they were not getting any wear. So, blazers with jeans make the most sense, as does a pencil skirt with a tee. Your outfit looks great and I love the scarf, along with the pop of leopard from the shoes.
    Have a great day,
    Stacey

  27. Fashion does not always have to make sense, we can allow ourselves to be a bit silly from time to time. It's about having fun with it, no?
I love the mix of prints and textures, and adding in that scarf was so brilliant.
