(Not) Overdone

I'm keeping things - relatively - simple and easy in this outfit post since I find that sometimes I have a tendency to overdo things. Like forcing a trend to work for me (like ... this). Thinking I am cooler than I can get away with (sigh - here). Or playing matchy-match to the Nth degree (I tend to do this a lot - like Friday? Yeah).

gingham & blue  gingham & blue

Stacy and Clinton always like to say that things don't have to match in an outfit, they can "go" and I'm modern enough to get it - but when I hold two (or, goodness gracious, three) pieces up to each other and they are a perfect color match, my brain gets sparked out and I can't compute anything else sensibly. That. Must. Be. An. Outfit. Or I'm done.

gingham & blue  gingham & blue

Like matching my shoes to my purse to my jewelry. Or my skirt to my shirt to my sweater. All together. Like in Friday's outfit post. Which I am still very proud of. It was obviously all done together intentionally. But after listening to a day of "it ALL matches!" comments, I kind of felt a bit yeah, I know ... ('Cause if that isn't a feeling, I don't know what is). And I get it - too matchy sometimes looks costume-y. What's a Type A borderline OCD girl to do?

When you ladies put together your outfits, are there things you know you sometimes overdo but still like to do them anyways? And have you looked over a old outfit and thought, that was way too much?

  1. I think I am the opposite...sometimes I think my outfits are too simple! I am not one to pile on the accessories or anything but maybe I should? haha.

    1. I don't know girl, I always hear that "less is more." Maybe sometimes I should take that advice, hehe! ;o)

  2. I think this looks fantastic : ) Not too matchy, but not random either. That sweater is so fun. The only thing I really do is one bright, the rest neutral. I don't ever pattern mix. I'm trying to rework my closet so that I have the ability to do that, but with what I have? Not so much.

    1. If we could all get that program that Cher from "Clueless" had so we could virtually mix and match our own closets for outfit ideas ... sigh.

  3. Usually I think my looks are too simple. But when I try to do more I end up taking things off before I walk out the door because it feels "wrong". Have you considering challenging yourself do less accesorizing and see how it feels? Personally I like to let one of my accessories be the stand out and not compete with others. If I wear bold necklace then I wear post earrings. If I'm wearing large hoops then I have naked neck or very deligate chaine necklace. Or if my top is really graphic then I don't wear a necklace. I feel like the top deserves the focus. IMO you are always stylin and I enjoy tuning in to see how you accessorize your outfits. :)

    1. I need to try for the "less is more" approach - but before I started blogging, I literally had no accessories of any kind, so I think this is partly me playing accessorizing catch-up, hehe!

  4. Sometimes I feel like I go from being super boring to having wwaayyyy too many things going on. Yesterday I wore a super simple outfit but this weekend I am wearing a sequin skirt, cobalt top and booties. Wow, just typing all that sounds like entirely too much.

  5. oh goodness, i always look at old outfits and wonder what i was thinking. but sometimes (rarely for me) something turns out much better than you expected, and you have a new "template" to work from. i didnt even notice how "matchy" that outfit was until i clicked back on it!

  6. I know what you mean! sometimes I over do the colors as well hahaha lately I've been trying to keep my matching low key

  7. I totally go nuts on the matching. Fortunately, I own a lot of earrings, so sometimes my matching-ocd can be satiated without it coming off too matchy....I hope.

  8. Matching is calming to the eye. When I want people to see me and not my clothes are look for a matched outfit.

  10. Hi Lisa,I really do like this outfit. It's true,it's a simple look, but still very chic and funky at the same time.I think it's a great idea that you added the necklace and the earings.Without them it would be just a nice casual outfit. As much as overdoing,my opinion is that it's quite relative what really looks as too much.I'd say to each it's own.As long as one wears a look with confidence and greatness then many things may pass through.Happy 2013 :)!

  11. I think this outfit is great and I don't think I've ever considered you too matchy-matchy. I'm the same way about outfits though. Once I see something that looks like it was meant to be, I can't un-see it and can't shake it up any. So, sometimes I end up matching a lot. I think it's probably okay though. ;-)

    1. I know - I held that sweater next to the skirt and it was like "have to wear." Then when my eye traveled to my gingham shirt, it became "MUST WEAR."

  12. I put together an outfit this weekend that I wondered if it was too much, at least in colors. I bought a pair of cords with two colors although one of them is a it could be purple or it could be blue. I added a chambray top with a bright neon sweater and shoes in a totally different color. I don't care to get all matchy-matchy or get crazy with how many colors I have in one outfit, but hey it's all about experimenting.

    1. Absolutely - experimenting is good. Bad thing about experimenting though, especially when you are a style blogger, is that you leave proof of experiments gone awry, hehe.

  14. You always look so perfectly coordinated to me that I was fascinated to see you link to a post for a combination you did not like. I love this outfit. I think it's relaxed, yet visually very interesting and pleasing.

All I have to do is look at my own blog posts to see that I am just begging for The Fashion Police to arrest me and my too bright tights :P

    1. Oh, girl, I am sure we all have our Fashion Police moments. As for not liking certain older outfits, I guess it is just us all maturing and having our personal style change. I think I was pretty proud of pleather-skirt-with-paisly-everything back in the day!

  15. I liked looking through those older posts! I didn't think anything was wrong with your "matching" on Friday - it just looked well put together! and it "goes", trust :)

what lipstick are you wearing? it looks so pretty on you. I don't "do" lipstick but I want a neutral color to make it look like I'm actually alive...

    1. I think for a F21 item, it is not bad. Plenty roomy and warm. And I've worn this a few times and it hasn't really pilled yet or anything, so that's good too. I haven't washed it yet though, just tumbled a few times in the dryer. The knit is a tiny bit loose overall though, so I can imagine that the white version of this sweater may be a bit sheer or need nude undergarments. I don't know if this helps or not!

  21. I don't know. Sometimes, I just say to hell with whether something worked or not. I liked it that day and that is enough. It brought me pleasure and the next day, if I feel differently, I wear something to suit that feeling. Do I overdo it sometimes? I'm sure I do. Did I have a wonderful time doing so? Yep! ;-)

  23. I too, like the idea of things going, and I can sometimes over do it... I must say that looking back I am not fond of my outfits with my wild tights!

I do appreciate the desire to just keep things simple though, and this works perfectly just as it is.

  27. As a type A sometimes OCD girl myself, I have to stop myself from being too matchy as well. In middle school I had a favorite pair of tennis shoes and I'd change out the laces to match my outfit. EVERY. DAY. So, yeah, I try not to be that girl anymore. Anyway, I think this outfit is the perfect amount of coordination--it's not too matchy :)

    1. I have a lot of pink in my workout clothes as well as a part of white and bright pink sneaks, so most time when I get dressed to workout, I kind of groan to myself because I am totally color-coordinated, which seems kind of silly to me for a workout outfit. But I guess I am totally THAT girl.

  28. I have never been one to always have to match everything, but I do love balance with my outfits and tend to take the risk with accessories and colour. Lovely outfit! :)

  29. OMG you are too funny! I love your honesty! I usually just wear whatever I like/feels good, but I feel like up until recently I was still figuring out exactly what MY style is and what resembles who I am. I used to dress super hipster one day and then girly girl the next... I still do sometimes, but I feel like I've narrowed down my style a little better over the last few months.

    1. One fun thing about blogging for me is that I kind of have a catalogue of myself through the seasons of how I've dressed. I can find of see how my style has developed and reading other blogs has helped me try new things and learn to refine my own style - though I'm still trying to figure out what my style is!

  34. Very cute look on you.

I don't think you overdo it with the matching of colors. It is simply part of your self-expression to enjoy doing the matching. The details you incorporate into an outfit show that you put some thought into the outfit, too.

I tend to go very simple, so when I'm in doubt I go for a matching or coordinating accessory to raise the outfit from simplistic to (hopefully, ideally!) elegant. For example, brown shoe, brown belt, and browns in a scarf today made the green sweater and black trousers I wore to work less blah.

    ReplyDelete
  35. That's a really cute sweater. I usually go the opposite way, and try to wear all of the neutral shades instead of matching.

  42. Sometimes I am matchy-matchy and sometimes I clash outfits - that's the fun about fashion isn't it? I mean you have A-P who is the QUEEN of matchy-matchy .. and then street style hardly ever is..

My policy is to just be confident with whatever I have on - and since I love brights, I usually look like a rainbow threw up on me...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh goodness. I have a friend who NEEDS to match. There's a point where you stop color blocking... or wearing a monochromatic outfit... and you start looking like a blueberry.
