Scattered, Smothered, Covered and Chunked

A scatterings of thoughts for you today:

It's been so pleasant in the SE lately that I am almost embarassed to show how over-dressed I am here. But I wore this ensemble about two weeks back when the temps were a lot more teeth-chattering (though today's kind of gloomy-chilly - I may be sporting the puffy vest again today). I can't seem to stay away from the black and gold pairings when I've got this jacket on.

I feel kind of Stay Puff-ish when I try to pair a puffy anything underneath another layer (believe me, I chose the slimmest looking shots to share with you all), but I sure was warm. I sometimes wish I could be one of those super-slim gals who could pile on half their wardrobe in addition to some of the world’s largest scarves and still manage to look cute and trim.

Christmas shopping – half done. Though I have absolutely no idea what to get my parents. Am seriously considering giving them cash (so bad, I know!)

My full-bred knucklehead of a pup loves herself some brawny boys. She prefers to play with the biggest, most muscle-y canines at the dog park – boxers, pit bulls, rottweilers, you name it. She also has a thing for silver labs – she will always seek one out of they’re around. Must be the eyes.

Update on the hair situation: I listened to some of your advice from my previous post and started putting product on to wet hair (instead of after I dry it – I know, I know, read the directions on the bottles, right) and using the nozzle attachment thing for my blow dryer. Wow. What a difference already.

I haven’t done any serious food shopping since Thanksgiving. My pantry and frig are like barren wastelands of shriveled zucchini and random bottles of clam juice or cans of enchilada sauce. But I have unsalted saltines. And found out that Walmart is one of the few stores that still carry Cheese Nips (not Cheez-Its – never Cheez-Its). Win.

What sort of randomness is on your minds lately? How do you buy a gift for someone who pretty much has everything they want / doesn't want anything? And do you prefer layering for cold weather or just blocking it all out with some substantial outerwear?

  1. Thank you for all the outfits you do with the downtown field jacket...after I saw your trip post when you wore it a few months back, I wanted it and finally got the blue one for my birthday. I spent one agonizing morning trying to figure out what to wear with it, but it's gotten better since then. Popped collar seems to be the trick. Thank you for some more ideas!!!

    2. Hi Lisa, I am curious what size you wear in the field jacket.

Such a cute layerd look. You pull it off well.

  3. Ohh, I love that vest! You look so cute and cozy. I had to finish my shopping early - Hanukkah is like, this weekend already - so I did some massive Black Friday shopping. I give gift cards to those who seemingly have everything. My parents like gift cards for dinner at a nice restaurant or movie tickets. Sometimes I'll get my mom one for a massage or mani/pedi. If all else fails, maybe an Edible Arrangement or some fancy cookies or chocolates always does the trick. Sometimes I just resort to straight-up asking people what they want - at least give me a category!! Oh, and this year, my go-to gift are these Hydraluxe pillows that have a layer of cooling gel on one side, so they stay nice and cool. I sleep hot and am constantly flipping my pillow, so I got one for myself, then my husband started stealing mine, so I bought him one. Lots of people are getting those this year from us, haha. Everyone likes a comfy pillow, right?

  4. Dangit! I had the downtown field jacket and got rid of it because I never seemed to wear it...but I love the way that you have it styled here! Yay for you! Wah for me! :o)

  6. I love all your layers Lisa! I am handmaking gifts for my mom and Patrick's parents. Parents always love that. But I don't know if you're into the whole crafting thing. I've only barely scratched the surface after the wedding.

  7. I love what you've done with the jacket, may give it another look. Presents: depending on the parent, theater or concert tickets? Is your Dad a sports fan? Does your Mom have a music interest Dad doesn't share?

  8. I think you look very slim and lovely in your layers! I am generally too lazy to layer like that and find it uncomfortable. Good thing my puffers fit over everything!

Gifting is hard for people who have everything, but I agree that handmade gifts can be awesome. (not good for this year, but next year, try making pomanders. They last FOREVER, smell delish, look pretty if you decorate with ribbons) Or, how about an intangible gift. I recently rec'd an e-mail from my local humane society, telling me that I could "sponsor" an animal there (via a donation) and gift that. Great for animal lovers.

Glad to know your hair situation is improving!

I totally wear this vest everywhere now, so I kind of consider it any inside layer, even though it's not ...

  14. It has been unseasonably warm down here in the SE that I haven't been able to layer in a while. If it were cooler then I would layer away. I love how you pulled off the look here and I'm loving the vest. Shopping for my mother always turns out to be a big ordeal every year. I never know what to get her. My sisters and I have started coming up with creative ways to spend some quality time with her like taking her on a weekend getaway, a day at the spa, dinner and theatre. She seems to love those so far.

I'm totally in the same boat as you regarding the lack of food in my house. It's especially hard for me because I travel pretty often. I think about stopping at the store and then I say what's the point and then I grab take out. And I agree with you about the Cheese Nips...they are so much better.

  15. Totally love this outfit on you and the red bag is the perfect finisher! So gifts for parents...I think I might get my parents tickets to a play or something...I'm thinking an experience rather than a thing might be the way to go for them because they too have everything they need/want.

  23. Ahh, to be able to layer without looking like Stay Puft, don't we all want that? But seriously, this outfit looks awesome and doesn't add too much bulk. :)

And parent presents are always the worst! Wait no, grandparent presents are even worse. At least for my parents I know I can just include a gift receipt and they know what to do with it. My grandma has no idea how a gift receipt works, so I have to make sure I find something that she likes. I think this year my mom just wants some Pyrex servingware. But my dad? No idea.

  29. It drives me crazy when I get stumped for gift ideas. A friend at work mentioned how she (and hubby) got his grandma mushroom hunting trip in the woods. I thought that was pretty cool, and so random too, no?... Done both, layering and the big puffy coat. Have to be careful with layering tho as it doesn't always translate well when I'm in an office all day and can only un-layer so much:p You look warm and toasty in your layers, and like the vest a lot!

I love this outfit combo and you make the vest look positively sleek. It had not occurred to me to layer over it...

  44. Glad to hear you've enjoyed such warmer weather in the SE. Because I feel as this week it's been freezing for us in the NE! I prefer to wear layers because I feel it's easier to add or remove pieces as needed, although not always easy to make it look 'nice' or matching... so, still learning a lot in this area. I still haven't figure out how to wear a puffy vest under a coat, I see some people do it so gracefully, but haven't had much luck with it myself. I really like how you mixed patterns in this outfit!
