Not Those Jeans

casual blazer

So I thought this outfit was really cas and simple but pretty kick-butt when I put it together. Blazer and denim, the perfect put-together-but-still-laidback combo, right? But what I forgot was that the simpler the pieces are for an outfit, the bigger the importance is on how each of them looked and fit.

Because, though my jeans are not terrible, they are also not so awesome - case in point, me in other jeans in Friday's post - my legs look great in that post, IMO. By comparison, I feel like these jeans are not so much long, lean, sleek-inducing.

Point being, just because something fits, it doesn't mean that it fits. A girl needs more than one pair of jeans because there's different denim for different situations (why don't men understand this). These jeans I'm wearing would probably have looked more appropriate with some mid-heel western-style boots. The rest of this outfit would have done better with those Friday jeans.

So as I continue to scrounge Ebay looking for more J.Crew hipslung fit jeans (why are you not making them anymore because they fit me perfectly?!), I want to know what do you find that fits you best? What's your favorite fit and brand of denim?

  1. I'm actually finding that as much as I love a good pair of Paige or J Brand denim - the inexpensive American Eagle jeans seem to fit me best and last the longest!

  2. I used to buy jeans that were decent because they were at a good price and I needed them in a pinch. Now I go through my jean purchases carefully, don't pay attention to size and normally go to Gap or J crew.

    1. I like JC denim but I don't know why their current denim pricing is so high! And suddenly petite people have fallen off the face of the earth? Why no inseams under 31" anymore?

  3. I love your jacket and all your jools :) but I think you are right that these may not be the best jeans for a fairly dressed up look. I'm thinking dark wash, slimmer cut, not necessarily skinnies, but definitely cut closer to your leg with enough length for the high heels.

I'm struggling to find any jeans that don't look like they swallowed me these days, and love the a.n.a. line of super slim jeans at jcp, followed closely by Loft jeans, skinny and trouser.

  5. I recently bought jeans from Levi's, and I will say that I'm sort of disappointed in the way they wear after washing (they don't seem as soft anymore, though this could be all in my head). They have a lot of different fits though, which is nice. On a related note, how do your jeans fit in the knees? Mine ALWAYS get those unsightly stretched out bumps there, even after only a wear or two, and I'm wondering if I am just stressing the pants too much, or the quality needs to be better.

    1. I guess knee stretching depends on fabric content. I love 100% cotton jeans because they seem to suck me in and hold their shape, while the jeans with the higher stretch content seem to bag out really bad during the day. I usually look for 2% of less stretchy content vs cotton. And I totally get stretchy knee because I like sitting on one leg a lot of the times.

  7. I'm addicted to Paige jeans because I have super-long legs. They seem to always fit me perfectly! Hudson also top my list because they have just the right amount of flair in their bootcut style and their flap pockets add a nice roundness to the booty!

  8. Lisa, you look good in everything but I agree, those jeans don;t do much for you. In fact, i think that nothing can bring the outfit down faster than a pair of mediocre or 'bad' jeans. Similarly, great jeans can instantly elevate your silhouette like nothing else.

  9. I dunno, I think you look really cute here. The jeans are just a little more relaxed than your usual ones. And I love your necklaces!! My favorite brand is AG - I have at least 8 pairs of Stevies, and they are basically all I wear... they are the exact right length for me (without hemming needed!), don't fall down at the waist, and tuck perfectly into my boots. They're also SO soft and comfy - well, some of them are, depending on the mix of fabrics in the denim, haha. Sadly, some of mine have worn out, but I can't bring myself to throw them away! I buy them on eBay and occasionally on sale at Anthro, because paying almost $200 for jeans makes me uneasy.

  10. I love this outfit on you Lisa! I guess now I know why we don't see you much in jeans since you are still trying to find those that you love. I'm not sure still what my faves are... There was a brand back home that I was fond of but they don't have it here so I'm still searching for the holy grail pair. All I know is that Old navy jeans as cute and affordable as they are, do not fit me well at all!!! :)

  13. I think this is a very cute outfit, not a dressy jeans look, but a more casual look. I bought a bunch of JCrew hipslung jeans before they stopped making them (no I had no premonition, just loved the cut) and still have unworn ones! I was just looking at my stash yesterday and wondering if I was crazy! I would offer you a pair but we are not the same size. I rarely wear blue jeans but have a lot of pairs of AG Stevies cords, Gap trouser jeans from years ago (hoarded), and view acquiring more jeans as a project requiring too much time. Ditto for most pants.

    1. How does sizing compare for you in the AG Stevies versus the JC hipslung? And if I had known, I would have totally hoarded JC hipslungs like crazy!

      Delete
    2. When I was buying up hipslungs, I got 32R, 33R, 33S, 32S and they all fit. The pair I have worn for years (and is SO beautifully broken in I have gotten compliments just on the worn-lookiness) is 32S. I don't have them here with me but I am pretty sure they are 100% cotton (?) or if they are a blend, they aren't stretchy. In AG Stevies, I prefer 31 but also have 32s (bought off EA Trade Market). I lost weight recently and these are looser now but not falling down! The Stevies are definitely stretchy!

      Delete
    3. Just to clarify: I have AG Stevie cords not jeans. I understand from reviews (and trying them on) that the jeans are stretchier and people who have both cords and jeans size DOWN for AG Stevies jeans....

I have several favorites but my top 3 go-to jeans are The Jean Shop skinny in dark wash (once broken in, they are comfortable and make me feel skinny and cool), J.Crew matchstick in dark rinse wash (they almost look like normal trousers since they don't have the contrast stitching, I can get away with wearing them to work) and J.Crew denim minnie pant (maybe these are not really jeans but they are my favorite skinny pants).

  29. Ugh! I read you loud and clear! Just tonight I was hemming and hawing over which jeans to wear to dinner. Jeans are THE uniform in Denver. Very rarely do you dress in "more than" jeans. Indi Denim made the only pair of custom fit jeans that truly were custom fit. Every time I put them on, I love them. They went out of business a few months ago and I am still in SERIOUS mourning. *sigh" True curvy fit: waist 28 hips 40 muscular thighs. A MISERY finding jeans that fit and flatter.

  32. Jeans are so tricky. I haaate buying jeans, which is why I hardly wear them. And with my twisted logic, since I don't wear them very often, I usually go for more expensive designer brands. As I write that, I realize it doesn't make any sense....if I don't wear them very often, shouldn't I go for a cheaper pair? Anyway, I like J.Brand because they're comfy.

Also, I really like your belt. And your jeans really aren't that bad. :)

    1. Jeans via Ebay have been pretty good as long as I know the measurements and material content. I compare that to the ones on my favorite jeans that I have. I usually go up or down from my normal size too as denim fits seem to vary sometimes.

  34. Skinny jeans are my fav...anything else on me and I just feel like I look even shorter. I know I'm too old to shop there, but I love how A&F jeans fit. I also love Old Navy's Rockstar denim. I'd buy a pair in every color if I could!

I have to say that I've always been in a love-hate relationship with my jeans. I can't really say which cut is my favorite, but I guess the ones I wear the most are straight legs. I have a couple of Levi's from my days in college that I still love and some old ones from Old Navy, but to be honest, I haven't shopped for jeans for a while as I don't wear them very often, except for the colder months.

  36. Jeans are tough. My challenge is always finding jeans in the right length. It seems like I have several heel-appropriate jeans, a few low-wedge-appropriate jeans, and very few that work with flats. Yes, I could go get them hemmed, but I'm too lazy. Gap is usually my best bet for styles that work on me.

    1. I totally look high and low for the "perfect" inseams because I hate the idea of spending $10 to hem a pair of jeans. Plus I'm just lazy and it takes me forever to take anything to the tailor!

  37. I still think these are a pretty good fit for you, just more casual than the other ones. And I think it's more from the color of the jeans than the cut.

I find it hard to wear 'cause it makes my legs look a lot shorter (I am on the petite side) so I choose skinny fit ones in dark shades :) and yes, try to wear your jeans with boots and heels, it will add up length :D Nevertheless, the outfit is fab! loving your style~ xo

  43. I find jeans to be so tricky also! I think that skinny jeans are the best for me- I experimented the flair a bit this year but I find that they make me look bigger--best to stick to the skinnies. I really like Hudson ones and Gap makes great skinnies too but they don't hold up so well after a few washes and they stretch easily.
