You know what I'm talking about. The innundation of these critter and slogan sweaters that have spread like wildfire across the trend-o-sphere.
Of course I'm not immune. (Remember this, this and this?) I jumped right on board the bandwagon and snapped up a mini menagerie, though they were cheapies - because though tigers are always in, tiger sweaters will probably not be. There seems to be no end to the combination of things that a retailer can find to embroider onto a sweater.
After a day of endless "it's not a seagull, it's a puffin, dammit" responses to others' questions, I am wondering whether these sweaters are too much? Am I inadvertently making some sort of statement by wearing a pelagic seabird on my chest all day? These sweaters aren't meant to be serious - they are cute, trendy and sometimes witty, but as a grown-ass woman (that I keep forgetting that I am), are they a little twee for me?
What do you think of the critter and slogan sweater trend? Do you think it's a little young or too cutesy for some people or situations?

I don't know if you watch any Glee, but that sweater reminds me a lot of Rachel Berry, season 1. She's supposed to be tacky, but I always thought her animal sweater outfits were pretty cute. Love yours!
ReplyDeleteI love Rachel Berry! Between her and Brittany, they are my two fave girls!
DeleteOkay. So you know I love critters...lol. :) I have this one, too, but need your help, should I go ahead and get Angus this tee from baby Boden so we can *sort of* match next spring? http://www.bodenpreview.com/en-US/Baby-0-4yrs-Tops-T-shirts/71253-BRN/Baby-0-4yrs-Fawn_Puffin-Big-Appliqu%C3%A9-T-Shirt.html
ReplyDeleteI probably will, but I need the enabling.
Oh, btw, you are 4 people away from 1000 followers. I hope you get to that magical number by the end of the day! Congrats!
That tee is adorable - I also saw this cute puffin kids tee: http://www.teacollection.com/product/2F22042/boys-t-shirts-puffin-tee.html?kw={keyword}&origin=pla&gclid=CKW6kezm_rMCFcKPPAodGTsA6A. The oranges may be a good match ...
DeleteThanks re: the followers! Doubt I'll get there by the end of the day, but I do plan to do a little dance of joy (behind the desk version) when I do, hehe!
Angus will look so cute in orange. I think you enabled me somewhere else. LOL. Love it.
DeleteI will make sure to do a little dance, too, for you when the magical millennial number appears. ;)
Haha how funny, I blogged about the same thing today! My sweater is probably too young for me but I'm wearing it anyway :) I just won't be wearing it to work, ha.

I love this sweater, it's one of my favorites!!! And, I love the critter and slogan trend! It seems as if a lot of other people do too....most of these sweaters are sold out!!! You look fabulous, as always!
ReplyDeleteLisa, that is the CUTEST sweater! But it doesn't look juvenile. It looks classy and sophisticated. LOVE the dress with it!!! You look gorgeous. I love it!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.averysweetblog.com/
I just love critter sweaters. I still want the French Hen sweater but it is long sold out and probably too expensive on ebay. Your puffin is so cute.
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to add that I love your entire outfit and your shoes are gorgeous. I want a critter sweater so badly but I am afraid I have waited too late. I looked for your puffin on the jcrewfactory website but did not see it.
DeleteI know, I would have posted a link but I couldn't find it anymore. I bet they still may be some in-store though, if you live close enough to a factory store. But the good thing is that a ton of retailers have a lot of really cute options out now.
DeleteThanks so much, Rachel!
(I didn't want that french hen sweater at first, but it grew on me, and by the time I wanted it, it was long gone ...)
San Francisco Westfield store had French hen sweaters long after they were gone elsewhere, don't know if that it still true. They still have bull dogs... Maybe they have hens too...
DeleteThanks for the info, Margaret!
Deletei need to get to a j crew sweater stat because i really, really want that sweater. love it on you!
ReplyDeleteUm, love. So cute!!

These animal sweaters are too cute. I have not bought one yet though.

I love how you styled your critter sweater! The blythe blouse dress looks great underneath. I haven't jumped on this bandwagon yet, but I love all the embellished sweatshirts. Your bag is lovely, btw:)
ReplyDeleteThat shirt is adorable, and OBVIOUSLY a puffin. In response to how "haters gonna hate," I offer this timely meme: http://files.redux.com/images/171748e8bf9cacc65cdec97dbebb8941/raw
ReplyDeleteAmazing.
DeleteThat had me bust out laughing - that is awesome!
DeleteThat sweater is so so cute!! I don't think it's too young if you style it to look chic like you did! I love it layered over your orange dress.

It's so cute on you. I'm on the fence about the critter/slogan trend...it seems too twee but at the same time I like it. I'm generally indecisive about trends though. Bad habit.
ReplyDeleteI'm lovin the puffin! I feel I'm too old for a critter sweater, but you look fab.
ReplyDeleteI think that sweater is just adorable. I haven't seen a puffin yet and like it a lot.
ReplyDeleteFor me, I do think this look is too twee, but I really like it on others, you included. My style is just not that cute, I don't think.
Despite being a "grown-ass woman" (love it) I like most of the critter and slogan sweaters. However, I think it's important to pair them with more sophisticated pieces, exactly like you did here, to keep them from looking too kid-like.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I also wore this sweater on Thanksgiving week with a polka dotted blouse underneath and remember sitting at a bar in my getup feeling about five years old ...
Deletegreat colours

I absolutely adore that sweater and was going to buy it on Black Friday with the big sale, but it was totally sold out by the time I got to it. The dog one was sold out, too, so I ended up getting the bow one, which is a bit more subtle. But I must say, I absolutely LOVE the puffin!!! I love quirky pieces - if you pair them with solids (as you did), I think you can get away with a little whimsy!
ReplyDeleteI recently purchased an owl sweater and love it. My husband made it abundantly clear that he thought it was a bit to cutesy!
ReplyDeleteFizz and Frosting
I love this and love your idea of wearing the sweater over a dress. I purchased a sheep sweater and I can;t wait to wear it. I might copy your idea
ReplyDeletek at www.beautystyleandgrowth.blogspot.com
I love your puffin! It was the only J Crew critter I was interested in. I bought the Old Navy fox sweater, not sure if I would like it or not. My Husband and boys seriously love that blasted sweater. They all makes tons of compliments when I wear it and tell me how much they love it. So weird. Not the original intent, but whatever, at least it makes the boys happy :) It is a cute fox, so I guess I see their interests:)
ReplyDeleteYour sweater is totally adorable. I don't think there is an age-limit to these cute sweaters. I wouldn't wear sweaters with Hello Kitty the size of a watermelon though haha!
ReplyDeletep.s. I'm hosting a giveaway. Hop by my blog to check it out!

I did totally consider those Forever 21 Hello Kitty pieces you're probably referring to. But I didn't buy any, I swear!
DeleteI don't think this sweater is too young for people who are young (at heart) like us. I love the color palette of this look; so cute and fun!

I think its cute! I wear my dog and heart sweaters proud lol
ReplyDeleteI love it! so cute! I wore my old navy fox today and people stopped me to ask about it! I got the same reaction with my skull sweater from target! Fun!! Love the orange!
ReplyDeleteI adore that fox sweater!
Deleteit´s great, really love it!
ReplyDeleteOh I love animal prints and simply adore this sweater on you!! Love how you layered the sweater of a dress too!!
ReplyDeleteI think you pull it off!!! I haven't tried this trend because I feel like you have to be careful what you pair it with so you don't look cutesy or too young like you said and I'm not trusting with my own style skills haha but I might take some cues from you!
ReplyDeleteI wore this sweater with a polka dotted blouse underneath during the week of Thanksgiving. Can't trust my own style skills sometimes either.
DeleteI LOVE your puffin sweater and your orange dress! It's the perfect combo, especially with your baubles!
ReplyDeleteI'm 34798274923749832% on board with the critter clothing.

Oh my goodness, this sweater is adorable and looks perfect with this dress! Also, "it's not a seagull, it's a puffin, dammit," made my day.
ReplyDeleteI know, when else will I get to say that except when I'm sporting this sweater?
DeleteI always wonder if because all blog and read blogs, trends seem normal to us. Huge bubble necklaces? common place! polka dots with plaid? chic, not crazy! neon accessories? 2012, not 1982. So I think it's adorable and just the right amount of whimsy, but for others, I could see why they would be like "Hmm....there's a bird on your sweater"
ReplyDeleteI know - and it's like "Animal Kingdom" on the blogosphere this week with the number of critter sweaters in outfit posts. You'd think the streets are lined with people with sequinned panda bears on their chests or something, but nope, I'm pretty much the only person I've seen so far in real life sporting one of these things.
DeleteCheck that - I did wear this sweater once around my big sis who was wearing a dog sweater. We were a trend salad.
DeleteAs someone who literally walked into Old Navy and started squealing like a girl over an owl sweater, I am TOTALLY on board with the cute critter trend! :)
ReplyDeleteI love this sweater!! SO CUTE!

I love the animal sweater trend, I just haven't found one that fit me (stupid long arms). I like yours too, although truthfully I thought puffins had some black on them??? Maybe I'm thinking of something else though!
ReplyDeleteNo you're totally right. This was pointed out to me by some of the "that IS a seagull" clan, hehe.
DeleteLove the bag, love the shoes, love the sweater - fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThat is just the cutest sweater!

This is such a cute outfit! I love it xoxo
ReplyDeleteNah, don't think it's twee at all, the way you styled it. Love the orange! And learned a new word today (pretty sure you can guess which one:p), thnx! hahahahaha
ReplyDeleteHaha, I blame in on myself watching too many episodes of "Nature" on PBS.
Deletelove the puffin & love the orange skirt!!!!

I really need to get one of those J Crew sweater!! You look pretty!!
ReplyDeleteI think that you styled this puffin critter sweater perfectly. I'm really loving the orange. Personally, I'm still not sold on these critter sweaters for myself. Like you, I often say to myself that I"m a "grown-ass woman." I think that it is a little twee, but the more I see them on my favorite bloggers, the more it's growing on me. I don't know...if I did get one, I wouldn't be able to wear it to work. My office is way too conservative for it. I already had people looking at me sideways when I wore a striped top and floral skirt a few months back :)
ReplyDeleteI figure some of my previous get-ups have gotten the side-eye, this little puffin guy is relatively tame in comparison!
Deleteyour duckie top is adorable!!! Love your style- fun and colourful!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! Love your cute sweater:)! You look great darlin! Just wanted to say thank you for visiting my blog:)! Hope you're having a wonderful day:))!
ReplyDeleteOh please, do not say you are too young for the critter sweater, what does that make me? I have the original puffin sweater and intend to break it out again this week. And I'm going to wear it until I'm 92 or it wears out, whichever comes first.
ReplyDeleteYou look seriously cute in the outfit.
I have to admit the quality and fit are two things I adore about this sweater, so I definitely plan to get my wear out of this piece!
DeleteI love puffins! Why do I associate them with breakfast cereal? Anyway, just treated myself to a Crewcuts tee - dark green with pale grayish blue line drawing of a rhino wearing a red & white Santa hat. Yes. It is cute.
ReplyDeleteI think age appropriateness is forgiven in any sort of holiday wear. It's almost Christmas, so of course the rhinos gotta get into the spirit as well.
DeleteCute and the orange is super!

I think it's really cute... on other people, but personally haven't gotten on board with it. I did contemplate an owl sweater but passed because the quality was lacking and that felt really Twee to me.
ReplyDeleteI find this trend comparable to wearing a novalty print dress with owls, birds or horses and I've worn plenty of those.
Like others said, I personally would not wear it to the office, only because I don't want to hear stupid comments all day long from people who don't appreciate fashion and prolonged glances at my grown as woman chest. ;)
I think a puffin a good choice for you. :)
I think this will probably be as cartoon-y as I will be getting with this trend. As popular as it is right now, I think we'd look like an overgrown 6th grade field trip if a bunch of girls were seen together in their critter gear!
Deleteyour sweater is so cute!!
ReplyDelete<3
ps. we are now having a wonderful Kenzaa give-away!!
Seagull, puffin... here I was thinking "Lisa's bird sweater is so cute!" Yes yes, I'm lacking in the imagination and vocab departments, lol.
ReplyDeleteI've yet jumped on the cute sweater trend... and I'm not sure if I will because I tend to dress pretty casual (borderline immature). I do think you styled the sweater nicely with "grown-up" pieces to balance out any cutesy-ness. No worries, Lisa!
I also have to say I enjoyed your NYC post IMMENSELY. I remember you telling me about Lombardi's awhile back and holy cow -- that pizza is ginormous! Loved seeing the city through a native's eyes!
It's funny, I haven't lived in the city for years now and while most of it remains as is, it is always changing and every time I go back to NYC, I get to see and experience things for the first time. Plus once I find places that I love, I can't help but to keep going back - Lombardi's is one, and P.J. Clarke's is now another!
Deleteawww cute outfit. i dont think it looks childish on you because you do look mature. on the other hand for me. i think ill make me look like a fetus once again because i have such a baby face. i would love some animal printed sweater. this is such a acute look on you tho. everything compliments each other.

Cute sweater!

You know I was kinda an asshat about those huge J. Crew statement necklaces that every style blogger then snagged knockoffs from eBay, but I am a terrible hypocrite re style trends I guess, because I am DYING for a critter sweater. I'm sort of wonderin' if it's appropriate for a 49 year old in an office, and if I'll look like I'm in third grade, but I will not rest until I get a critter sweater. Now I just have to pick the critter :P
ReplyDeleteHmmmm, is yours a baby DoDo bird? :)
Is it wrong that I want another critter sweater - the new one from J.Crew with a pear on it? I mean, it's a pear, so it's technically a fruit sweater and not a critter, and I've got no fruit sweaters ...
Delete(BTW, I think you'd look fab in the fox sweater from Old Navy. I think the red from the fox and the brown heather background with play well with your complexion and hair!)
I can't pull off the critters on a sweater, but I like them a lot on a graphic tee. J. Crew has been so stingy with the graphic tees lately. You look very cute in this outfit, not too twee. I say, if you like it, wear it!
ReplyDeleteThis outfit is adorable! :)

I just posted about this - ha!
ReplyDeletePersonally, I can't get on board. Maybe it's because I have a baby and spend a lot of time reading her "furry animals" book and neatly stacking her stuffed bears and straightening her owl pictures in her room...
I did buy a fox shirt so maybe I have one foot on board.. you look great. totally put together and not "twee" at all!
Very cute sweater, but I must agree with those who question the bird type--puffins have very distinctive black backs and striped bills (just google some images). This duck-like creature is also cute, though!
ReplyDelete
