These are a Few of My Favorite Things: 2012

Thanks for making this an amazing blog year for me, ladies. To round out 2012, here's my personal Top Ten faves from this past year!

❤     ❤     ❤

1. The tillary tote. I don't typically need a bag this large but I adore the shape, the colors ... and for $60 - yes, please!

2. Monogram necklaces. Yes, it is all about me sometimes.

3. The chiffon skirt. Who would have thought a typical party fabric in a total girlie hue would end up being such an easy to reach for work piece for me.

4. J.Crew outerwear. The downtown field jacket has been my go-to travel jacket. The excursion vest is my first puffy vest ever and I am wearing that thing everywhere now.

5. Pencil skirts. Love the silhouette. Still trying to nail down this whole "walk like a lady" thing though.

6. Colored pants. There's a first year for everything for me.

7. Neon pink. Yes, it's been one bright spring and summer.

8. Red, white, blue. Classic combo. Can't get enough of it.

9. I have a mild stripes addiction. So of course what did you think would happen when my eye caught this flippy skirt?

10. Critter tops. The more the merrier.

As for looking towards 2013, I like to think of a quote by C.S. Lewis: There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.

Have a wonderful New Year's!

A Little Luck and Pinch of Calm

Hey ladies - this is what I wore recently during some unusually warm late December days in the SE. I definitely am not complaining! Unless these are just the last few beautiful days before The (supposed) End, tick tick tick ...

Provided we make it past Friday, I'm planning to head up to the NE to be with my fam for the holidays. As I've mentioned before, my fam is pretty low-key when it comes to holidays, but we never miss an excuse to gather and eat eat eat. And exchange gifts. And do what has become a tradition for us "kids" - after Christmas dinner, my dad gives us each an envelope with assorted lottery scratchers. We spend the hour digesting and (hopefully - but so far not yet) scratching away those little tickets to the promise of endless thousands. My BIL has been the luckiest these past few years and I, unfortunately, have been pretty consistent with getting the short end of the scratcher stick.

And since I typically have no luck with increasing my fortune financially in a sudden state-sponsored windfall, I spend a bit of time during that wonderful limbo week between Christmas and New Year's contemplating how I am going to better myself come January. Eating better and starting a new exercise routine typically rank high for me, though I suck at follow-through. Being a calmer person will also rank high on my list for 2013 - I've had some new situations crop up this year that tested my patience and have surprised myself with my (bad) reactions to them. If others are causing chaos around me, it is up to me not to play into that - so, I guess, Om's the word.

Are you ladies have any holiday traditions you always look forward to? Have you already worked out you resolutions for 2013 - and are you a resolutions keeper or breaker?

At Play

Sorry for my inadvertent bloggy absence this past week, but I'm finding myself short on this thing called time lately, between trying to fit in the last few work projects before the break and getting things squared to celebrate the holidays with my family and friends. At least I can check gift shopping of my list now - thank goodness.

As exciting a month as December typically is, it also is a pro at making me a little sad and reflective. December seems to speed by with activity, a great exclamation point near the end and then - poof - it's all over and we've got to start another year again. So it wasn't that surprising to me when I watched Toy Story 3 for the first time a few nights ago that the last five minutes of  it made me bawl like nobody's business.

I know that I'm a lucky one to have the privilege of growing old. But I also appreciate and cherish those carefree years that I had as a child - being able to run wild with the other kids on my block as we tested the boundaries of what our parents actually meant by "sundown"; having no inhibitions and being able to just go up to another kid and ask if they wanted to play; reading some of my favorite library books to my mom (Berenstain Bears was a fave); building forts in the living room on Saturday mornings while watching cartoons and wrestling while it was still WWF; standing on a chair so I can reach the kitchen counters and "help" my grandmother mix together meatballs or knead dough.

And the toys ... I envied my cousin's real metal Transformers and Voltron - he had all five lions that really snapped together to form a robot! But I had a Jem doll - with the light up earrings - and my all-time fave was She-Ra. Female actions figures! Girl had a bomb-ass fit body, kicked butt in a short white mini while fully accessorized in gold - including her sword and blinged out shield, had a buff male side-kick and a flying horse. Take that G.I. Joe.

(Unfortunately my dad is a clean freak and it wasn't long after I stopped playing with my toys that they disappeared completely from our house. Bye-bye Barbie, hello Huffy bike ... until I outgrew that and it got tossed/donated as well).

So I'm going to ask you ladies to a take a moment and reflect. What are some of your favorite memories or activities from childhood? Are there any toys from your childhood that you're sometimes still nostalgic for?
