Part of the Time

pink & navy  pink & navy

A dreary day with not enough daylight hours necessitated an indoor outfit shoot with artificial lighting, so since I already committed one style blogger sin, I threw caution to the wind and did another thing an illiterate techie like me shouldn't - I played around with the photo processing a bit (good, bad, or other).

Such is the life of a full-time clothes horse and spare-time blogger.

As much as blogging is a fun hobby for me, I sometimes struggle to find time for it. Work, family, and "real life" often take priority. (And there are those days when I've got the time, but I'd rather just be sitting on my couch in a sweatshirt eating Cheetos and watching Doomsday Preppers).

I am a total tortoise when it comes to blogging, seriously. I can take eons to decide on an outfit to wear, hours (seemingly, but oft-times, literally) to put together a post, and always struggle to find the time to take pics. I completely over-think things, I'm sure.

So I'd love to know how you ladies do it. For those of you ladies with blogs, how do you find the time to fit blogging into your schedules? How much time do you think you spend on blog-related activities each week? Does blogging ever feel overwhelming?

  1. Love how that necklace looks like a collar!

Since blogging is a very spare time hobby for me, I don't let it take priority at all. I spend maybe an hour or two every week on my own blog, and that works just fine for me. :)

  2. Great post, as always! I love your outfit. That Anthropologie necklace is hands down one of my favorites. About blogging: like you, I don't let it take priority. I love blogging, so I see it as an opportunity to shop with my friends, especially since most of my friends don't shop where I shop. I try to squeeze out 30 minutes to an hour here or there to compile a post. And, I tell myself that posting pictures will ultimately reduce the amount of time I spend in my closet looking for something to wear!

  3. It can definitely feel overwhelming at times. Ok, most of the time. I'm still a new blogger so I haven't gotten the whole time management down yet. I'm not sure I ever will. It takes me at least an hour to put a post together, and that's with all the help I get from my husband ( he takes pictures, edits them and helps with any other technical stuff that I can't do myself). I don't know what I'd do without him. I really admire bloggers like you Lisa who besides putting beautiful outfits together also manage to write quality post every time. Since time is such a big issue for me I often have to skip the writing part and only focus on the pictures.

  5. Lisa, I like that you explored the camera settings! The pictures turned out great, experiment more :)

As for time management, I decided to take a bloggie break when I felt like I was forcing myself to make time for my blog and in turn, the quality of the posts took a turn in my opinion. Although it can be overwhelming at times because I think about all that I can do with the blog, I come back down to reality and realize that this is just a hobby for me and that I should balance my time and make room for other interests. I try not to spend too much time blogging, but you know, there are those days when I just stare at a blank screen longer than necessary, hoping inspiration strikes.

    1. I know, I hate those days when I may have a good outfit I want to post but zero ideas, or days when I'm full of post ideas but can't seem to pull together anything to wear! Ah well, good thing we do this for fun! ;o)

  6. Hmm yes indoor shots, artificial lighting. Guilty as charged. I snap my pics & blog when the baby is taking her nap so it doesn't encroach on "our" time. My pictures are very basic so it doesn't take long :-)

  8. What I do is blog as lot of posts on the weekends/take the photos on the weekends and plan out my outfits then. With school it's hard to predict when I am going to get to photograph the outfit so sometimes I do the current outfit I am wearing and then the outfit I wore the day before.

    1. I wish I could plan outfits in advance but I've never ever been good with that. Closest I've come is jotting down some ideas and figuring it out day-of. That's why it sucks to be me when I am traveling - I am stuck with only 3-4 things to wear and sometimes none of them seem to go together!

  9. I love blogging but the photo aspect always wears me down - Dh is usually out the door before I'm dressed and home after ive changed. That's the hardest part for me.

  11. blogging takes up more time than i'd like to admit. when my son goes to bed at 7pm, i am on the computer until almost midnight most nights and wake up again at 6:30am only to get right back on. i use his nap time to take outfit pics. some days i love it. and some days i think of all of the other productive things i could/should be doing. =(

  12. blogging does seem overwhelming at times. lately, i've been so busy with regular day-to-day things and holiday stuff that i don't have as much time right now. so i've stepped it down a notch when it comes to posting (only posting every other day). i really love blogging, but i don't like to just throw any kind of post together. plus i have a strong connection with my readers and like reading & commenting on their blogs. if i don't blog or comment i feel guilty! i feel if someone took the time to write a comment, it deserves a reply (no matter what kind of comment it is). it's work, but it's also rewarding. i've learned how to do so many things through blogging, i've connected with wonderful bloggers from around the world (now friends) and i'm growing through it! i will continue to blog. i love it too much. LOVE your sweater and bag lisa!

    1. That's great, Kim. I kind of don't like it when some people just "dial it in" because you can kind of tell they're not into it. I see it mostly from the pro blogger set because their livelihood depends on their posting frequency.

  13. I definitely let my blog fall to the wayside to relax sometimes! It's amazing how much time outfits, pictures, and posts actually take. There are times when I just don't have the energy for it. Lately I've been trying to take my pictures during lunch breaks from work so that in the evenings all I have to do it edit and write. Easier said that done, though!

  14. I LOVE your necklace!! And I spend way to much time blogging...haha. I don't really have a full time job though so when I have days off I probably spend 5+ hours commenting/looking at other blogs. My posts don't usually take that much time though...maybe 20 mins. It really is a part time job for me!

  20. Love this bag. At first I thought it was a Chloe bag!

Blogging and working full time is hard. I've really slowed down on the blogging. I usually dedicate Sunday afternoons to blogging and photo editing. I sometimes spend an hour or two in the evening during the week. But since I don't get paid to blog I don't really feel obligated to post as frequently as some other bloggers. Ever since I put less pressure on myself it's been alot easier and more enjoyable. Don't fret, you're doing a great job with your blog :)

  21. I totally understand girl. Sometimes it can definitely be overwhelming. I spend about 30-45 minutes on my blog in the evening after work and dinner. Other times I'll do all my posts on Sunday afternoons and set them up to post automatically throughout the week. That usually works the best because I don't always have the time to do it on week nights. I try to stay dedicated, but it's not easy. If only someone would pay me to be a fashion blogger. :)

    1. I know, right? ;o) However, I'm not sure I want the pressure of HAVING to post and put together something awesome all the time because it's my livelihood - to me that would take a lot of the fun out of it.

  22. Yeah, I'd definitely say I struggle with that as well. Some days I just don't feel like taking pictures or writing a post. And it's definitely hard to juggle "real" life with blogging. Right now I'm substitute teaching, so I have a lot more time than I did when I had a full-time job. (And a lot less money to shop with, darn it!) When I'm not subbing anymore, I will become a blogging slacker no doubt!

  24. I'm always surprised when you refer to yourself as an "illiterate techie" because your indoor photos are some of the best I see. You're like my GOAL for indoor photography. I like that you played with your settings. I don't have anything fancy like Photoshop, but I do play too much with the free Picasa and Pic Monkey.

I also want all of your clothes and accessories, and you to dress me every morning. Is that too much to ask? lol I bought a beaded collar off eBay for, um, $5, and can't figure out what to do with it. I also got an antique one for, um, $5, and can't figure out what to do with it either.

I don't have any time to invest in photo shoots, so they really are what I'm wearing and/or doing that moment. Again, studying my fave style bloggers including you, I'm not posting daily but more thinking about if the photos are good enough to share and/or if I have any content that might engage. I also love my fave daily bloggers, but sometimes it's a struggle to keep up with all the posts in my RSS feed reader, and I try to be mindful of my readers' time constraints, too.

    1. Aw, thanks, Lynne, but I do most of my "playing" via Picasa because I'm too cheap and dumb for Photoshop. Taking photos when I am at home has so far been the easiest for me - I can snap a few pics then run off to do whatever.

  26. Adorable! The photo processing is fun too!

I take indoor photos almost all the time. (I don't have time to scout my local everyday, especially in winter.) I do a quick photo-shoot before leaving the house. I also try to do scheduled posts on the weekend for the following week. That way I have post everyday. I find I don't always have time or energy to post during the week. And you know what...it's okay not post everyday. Hobbies shouldn't be stressful.:)

  27. Oh, deciding what to wear? I plan a handful of outfits for the week. It makes it easier to get dressed in the morning. But, sometimes I just go by what speaks to me in the morning. As for traveling, I definitely plan ahead and make sure everything mixes and matches.

  29. Love your necklace! I definitely understand when life gets in the way. I try to focus on blogging at least 2-3 times a week -- scheduling posts ahead of time, commenting back, etc. I wish I could take more outfit posts, but like you said it's difficult getting photos outdoors sometimes due to cloudy days or even tight schedules. I guess we just do the best we can :)

  30. I feel like I truly don't fit blogging in as of late... I've been much more lax about letting a week go by without a post, and that is a-ok. That sweater with the necklace is the perfect mix of comfy and gorg!

  35. I think I put too much pressure on myself to get 5 posts per week - plus maintain my sister blog that focusses on fashion/shopping in Rochester NY. My biggest challenge is time - I have lots of great opportunities that I have to say no to because I just don't have the time to write. Looking for a part time nanny so I can have 10 kid free hours a week to dedicate to my blog and then find another 5-7 hours of my own time. As a stay at home mom I need this as an outlet though... I need the me time. I just wish I had more of it... right now I'm getting it done... not always the quality I would like, definitely not artful photography, but its keeping me sane. I just don't get to sleep much...

  37. Oh my gosh, I totally know how you feel! Blogging is a second job... Really. Sometimes when I'm at work I'm hoping I get home with enough time just to pick an outfit, do my hair, and shoot it before the sun goes down. It can be overwhelming sometimes but I don't regret it one bit. At the end I'm proud of the blog I created. Plus, it's better than being bored on the couch :)

and yes i know what you mean.. i think i took a hiatus a couple of months ago.. i think i was down to one post a week (and that was on a good week haha) but yes blogging can be seriously time consuming. but i try and plan on my outfits for the week.. and i usually can bang out 1 to 2 posts a week.. with getting dressed, taking photos, editing and blogging it it takes me roughly 2 to 4 hours a week.

  42. Blogging and working full time is a struggle for me lately. I started blogging because I needed a creative outlet that my last job wasn't allowing me to have. Now that my current job requires me to travel 50% to 60% of the time, I'm finding that it's really hard to fit this in on a daily basis. Right now, I have a system that seems to be working for me. On the weekends, I plan out a few outfits and take photos of them in advance for the week. I'm not posting as much as I did earlier in the year, but at this point it's enough for me and hopefully my readers. I have to remember that I shouldn't feel stressed out about blogging. Blogging should be fun :)
