Have a Holly Jolly

I think it is safe to say that there are few, if any, people who don't like the holidays coming up. The year is coming to a close and we all become reflective and hopeful. It is a time for celebration and family. Cozy things to wear and creamy drinks with marshmallows. Calories zip their lips for a few weeks. Work and school slows down and becomes just somewhere we go to discuss our plans while counting down the days until we take a collective break unless you're working retail - then, I'm sorry because you guys are just starting to pull your hairs out.

Gifts and giving will be coming up to a fevered pitch soon (really, Walmart, you're going to open your stores for huge sales on Thanksgiving? Well, nothing like some good retail cardio after you've gluttoned yourself with all things buttered and mashed) and I do love giving gifts. Partly because we typically keep gift giving within the immediate family so I can just give to the people that really mean something to me and I don't have to worry about what to buy those-people-whose-names-I-don't-remember-but-they-live-three-doors-down-and-I-think-I-said-hi-to-them-once-in-passing-two-months-ago.

And partly, well - I like the gift getting too. Who doesn't? It is not so much what the gift is, but the fact that someone I care deeply about has taken the effort to think of and find something I would thoroughly enjoy and acquired it for the sole purpose of giving it to me. It may be something sentimental. Hand-made and one-of-a-kind. Or a sweet generous splurge. Something that is a complete surprise and I would have never thought I wanted but now that I have it, I love it.

For me? Honestly I always go into Christmas with a big question mark over my head. I am probably a frustrating person to buy for, because I'm pretty particular but I never seem to know exactly what I want. (My sis has resorted to giving me gift cards for my fave shops every year and I pretty much do the same back - it works well for us because we're both pretty darn particular, plus she has the intimidating factor of having immaculate taste).

This year I think I'd love to get a little more spontaneity (like, it's a thing, right). Something like a surprise weekend trip away, tickets to a fun event, doing an activity that is out of my norm. Or if we're talking real life things, maybe some kitchen gadgets so then I'd have zero excuses on making all those great things I've pinned to eat - hello, Williams-Sonoma. Perhaps a serious handbag in classic black leather, something I lack, that would stand the test of time and trends. Almost anything from Shiseido - their facial creams are awesome, but soooo expensive. Or shoot, I should just gift myself that treadmill already. All the benefits of running, none of the risk of tripping myself up over any number of sidewalk cracks, uneven gravel, twigs and leaves, general flat dry surfaces.

It may be over a month away, but that really means it's right around the corner now. So before we get all caught up thinking about others, it's time to ponder a wee bit self-indulgently - what's on your holiday gift receiving list this year? And do you love to be surprised, or do you know exactly what you would like?

    1. Aw, thanks much - that means alot considering I usually limp along with any sort of web design!

  2. I love being surprised, but I'm hoping to get the gift of going to a Women's Burton snowcamp to work on my boarding skills! I think the "experience" gifts are certainly the best, but I certainly wouldn't say no to a giftcard from a favorite shop either!

The bird print sweater is delightful.

    1. I can barely ski to save my life, I couldn't imagine snowboarding! Actually last time I was on anything remotely snowboard-like was a skateboard during high school and I recall busting my butt pretty hard on that thing! At least snow is softer than concrete.

  3. I'll admit that I'm one of those difficult-to-buy-for people. If I really, really want something I typically buy it myself, which leaves few items on a list for my family and friends. This year, though, I'd really love some new camera accessories!

  4. I love being surprised, but am rarely so. I leave too many good hints so people will know what I want? Everyone around me are terrible at keeping surprises? This year, my wish list includes a pair of big ole' stunner earrings. Something big and sparkly and gaudy and green!

    1. Ooh, I want big green stunner earrings too - but I haven't really found anything I like yet. Come on, F21 or Asos, you guys are good at making big ole statement pieces for cheap!

  5. i asked my parents for 5 things - a cape, a pair of leggings, two cheapie necklaces, and the jcrew lady jacket in mustard. those are really the only outstanding things that I can think of wanting (at least, this week). sometimes i like being surprised, but at least this way i can hopefully know what i'm getting is something that i'll like and use.

    1. I've wanted a cape forever, but I haven't found one yet that either doesn't look ridiculously large on me or is strangely too cropped and weird.

  6. I am a weirdly difficult person to buy for. I want a lot of things but I can't seem to narrow it down what exactly I want to receive as a gift so then whoever has my name gets really frustrated with me!

  7. I hear ya. My boyfriend is pretty good about giving me "experiential" gifts, but sometimes I just want a new tech toy or an ice cream maker, ya know? Pretty jewelry couldn't hurt either. :-D

  8. Usually I have a hard time coming up with what I want, but this year I actually have a list. I've been lusting over a pair of brown riding boots from Nordstrom and I'd also love a monogrammed necklace. I like surprises, but my hubby always asks me to give him a list since he needs some direction in the gift buying department :)

  10. Unfortunately, I'm a bit of a bah humbug when it comes to Christmas. :( It has to do with my mom always raging against Christmas being too commercial, which totally kills the Christmas spirit. I'm trying to change that for myself, but it's tough!

I'm really hard to buy for too because anything I want, I buy for myself. It really annoys my friends and family. :P And strangely, there's nothing I really want this year...

Love the navy and green combo, with that striped clutch! Okay, that's what I want this year, a striped clutch like yours. :P (I'm highly suggestible.)

    1. Hehe, I'm a bit that way about Valentine's Day - I refuse to be sucked into the heart-shaped box of chocolate and over-priced roses void! ;o)

  11. I would say I'm pretty hard to buy for too, my tastes are pretty specific. But there are a few things on my wishlist: a new lens for my camera is one that's tangible, the others are more "experience" gifts too (a concert, mini vacation, etc.).
By the way, I love that fun printed sweater!

  12. My mom always gets me the most perfect gifts. This year she is getting me several cashmere sweaters from J.Crew warehouse sales, and an enameled cast iron casserole which I have wanted forever. I really don't NEED anything so I am not really asking for anything else, from anyone. I LOVE giving gifts; it is so much fun!

  15. Love the navy and green combo! That stripe clutch is ADORABLE! I think that might have to go on my "want" list:) Yes, I make a list of wants, but I like to be surprised too. xoxo

  16. I have a friend who always gifts the most incredible stuff each year, not in price or size but in the way she inevitably picks something perfect for each friend's personality. So I always feel pressure shopping for her because I want my gift to her to be just as well thought out!

For myself, I always wish for gift cards to one of five or so stores. I tend to purchase things I want quickly so telling my f&f now means I might already have bought it by the time Hanukkah and then Christmas roll around. ;)

  17. Love love this outfit Lisa!! The sweater is so adorable!! It kind of reminds me of that sweater coat they have a Anthro now....the one everyone is raving about :) For friends that I know are picky I tend to give them gift card and a small gift. Maybe I'm a boring gift giver ? hehe.

    1. I love that Anthro sweatercoat, but I sure am not spending $200 on something that kind of looks like a big ole robe. I do hope it makes it to sale though.

  19. Love the classic pairing of navy and green! I also love how you rolled up the sleeves on the sweater to show the contrasting pattern!

I'm a super picky gift-receiver, too. I really only want what I ask for, and sometimes I hate that I'm such a pain like that. But I know what I want and what I like, so that's gotta be good for something, right?!

    xoxo

  22. My family has mostly given up in the gifting area. We still get each other a few things, like a blender or something like that ;) would never buy anyone clothes. we tried that when we were younger and it never worked out so well! I'm not really hoping for anything. Just dont need anything this year!

  23. oh, so hard! I mean, the way stores are these days, by the time my family wanders in to take a look whatever I might have had my eye on is already gone. Last year I was smart and stocked up on new running stuff ('cause I can buy the silly stuff for myself but I resent having to pay for practical things...priorities!) On the other hand, I have an anthropologie store in town finally- easy christmas shopping right? If only my boyfriend can find it... My family likes lists that are very specific- I used to try and surprise people but I realize now it's best to just go out and buy whatever they've asked for. so romantic....

I love the cuffs on the sweater- adorable.

  25. I still can't come to terms with the fact that the year is almost ending! When I looked at the calendar this morning and saw that Thanksgiving is next week, I think I froze for a minute just thinking about all the food that need to be prepared and all the gifts that I need to find! I also just gift to my immediate family, but it has grown so much in the last couple of years that now I have to make a list! Anyhow, I don't mind being surprised with what's on the gifts, I think I care more about the good feeling that somebody has just remembered me! That is such a lovely bird sweater, btw!
