A Constant State of Flux

blazer & brooch

To keep my closet semi-sane, I try to abide by the rule that before a new item comes in, something old must go out. So a lot of my things are constantly moving around in my closet as I continue to shop, shop, shop for the new and weed out the old for donation/sale/pass to a friend.

When it comes to deciding what should go in my closet, I know a lot of people recommend that if you haven't worn something in more than a year, then it shouldn't take up anymore room in your life. I unfortunately have a bunch of stuff that I may not have worn in a really long period of time but I still can't give up because that jacket is just so darn pretty/my sister gave me that bag/something awesome happened last time I wore that dress. I can be a total sentimentalist - or a hoarder in training.

Most times when I sort through my things, I pull out items that either don't really fit me well (I know, they should have never made it into my closet in the first place ...) or where I may just plain be out of like with something.

And yes, then there are the dreaded new with tags things - the risked "final sale" items that didn't work out or the pieces that just never got worn but sat around so long they can't be returned anymore (and I have a bad habit of ripping the tags off items as soon as I bring them home). These guys are few and far between, thankfully.

Do you have rules about what items should stay and go in your closet? How do you determine when it is time for something in your wardrobe to go?

  1. I have a few items that I will never get rid of like my wedding dress (I put it on every anniversary) and other pieces that are special. I also try and donate things to make room for new purchases. I have the habit of keeping things because they still fit.

    1. Granted I don't have a wedding dress, but I couldn't imagine ever giving it up, especially since they are always so darn expensive! And I am glad you still get some wear out of yours!

  2. I LOVE those shoes. :)

And I love the phrase "hoarder in training." It is like hoarding, but with training wheels. LOL.

I don't have a special system, but I am always a fan of getting rid of items whose colors look terrible with your skin tone, as that is something unlikely to change. As much as I may love baby pink (so GIRLY!), it looks HORRIBLE on me, so I have no items with baby pink in them.

But I am getting better about not buying colors that look bad on me, so I now have moved onto "does this item make me look frumpy?" If the answer is yes, I definitely purge it. And I usually can't tell if something is frumpy until I get it home and photograph it, so I spend a lot of time returning things. Agh. Oh, well.

I also feel like if a cut isn't modern and is not back in an "ironic" way, then it has to go. I had SO many 90s tanks and pants and they all had a very dated cut--the tanks all had spaghetti straps and were short and all the pants had wide pants hems and high waists. I could have worn them...if I had any desire to look like this: http://img0.etsystatic.com/000/0/5781793/il_fullxfull.326917148.jpg. No. Thanks.

    1. Oh lady, the halter on that lady is so "90210" - I think I remember seeing Kelly wearing something very sim!

I'm with you on the color thing too - why has it taken me so long to realize that most pastel colors don't look good on me?! Stay away, lavender!

  4. This is a great outfit. I love the blazer!
I try to weed out things in my closet about once a season. I try to adhere to the "if you haven't worn it in a year" mantra, but like you some things I hold onto because I love them or know that one day I'll wear again.

  5. i am constantly updating my closet! i have some things in there that are years old and i still love them, and others that are barely a few weeks old and make it to the sell pile. i've been doing it for years. as much as i try to only make "solid" purchases, it just doesn't always happen!

  6. I'm such a hoarder when it comes to my closet. I never want to let anything go. And then I justify same a year later when I need "that piece" to complete a look and I still have it. LOL Love your flower pin today Lisa!

    1. Hey, I've totally gone through my donate bags before and "reclaimed" some pieces that I didn't seem to want last week but suddenly need in my life. Again.

  7. You look great in the tipped blazer!!
I tend to get rid of items that don't fit me anymore although sometimes it's difficult if it was a piece that I loved. I've been trying to be more discerning and getting rid of things that I probably shouldn't have bought in the first place (not the right fit) or I just don't have the loving feeling anymore, if I had it all. I want to adhere to my new philosophy of buying things that I absolutely love and want to wear all the time.

  11. I am so mad that I don't have time to fully comment on this post because I have so many thoughts to discuss with you about "clothes hoarding" but I am headed into a test. Just know that you are rocking this and I love, love, love this outfit.

  12. I put myself on a shopping ban this summer and got rid of a lot of clothes because I used to not have a one-in-one-out policy and my closet was completely over-stuffed. I'm getting better at following that now, but I don't always. And now that I've pulled out my winter stuff I think I'm going to have to do another purge. Sad face.

  13. I'm a sentimental closet keep as well! I've been trying to get better about letting items go but it's so darn hard. I think the one in, one out rule is the best way to keep things under control while still indulging!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I try to stick to the "one in one out" policy too, although sometimes it works better than others... I have a hard time getting rid of things, but I try to when I can so that everything will fit!
I love this outfit Lisa, I might just have to steal it :)

  15. i usually keep everything in my closet until it gets so full i can no longer move hangers. and then i weed it all out at once. and then i proceed to fill it back up again!! i love your blazer and gingham. and that big flower adds the perfect pop!

  16. I think I'm very sentimental with my clothes - I like to keep them all but maybe once a new season comes I do a big rummage through my things and donate things I know I won't use anymore or give anything that is half decent but not my style anymore to my siblings :)

  17. Ooooh, in love with your jacket and big Carrie Bradshaw flower brooch.

Lately, my closet has been getting weeded out simply by fit. Outfit pics have shown me that I have a tendency to still wear clothes that are too big. It is so hard to let them go (what if my size changes again) but with limited storage space, it's time to be tough. I'm also finding that I'm reaching for the same faves, which is making it easier to find the closet orphans a new home.

  18. My closet got a lot smaller when I moved across the country! I only took two suitcases with me so I really had to think hard about clothes I wanted to bring with me! Love your blazer!

  19. I usually try to wear a piece I'm not sure about - styled as cutely as possible - and if I wasn't totally thrilled with the result or it didn't make me feel like I wanted the look to make me feel, then I decide to part ways with it. Note: sometimes hoarder instinct overrides this rule, so you gotta be really firm.

  21. you are ludicrously cute! that gingham and flower combo is quite literally the sweetest thing I've seen done with clothes in a long long time! I wish I had some sort of system for ridding myself of extra crap too, but I am a serious hoarder. SERIOUS hoarder. I try to only buy things that I need or love or are exceptionally unique... but when you do that, it makes it really tough to weed out the crap because everything I have I LOVE or NEED or is super unique... siiiigh. if you ever find the holy grail of a solution to clothes hoarding, please, let me know!

DANG IT! ' hahahaha.. so whenever i visit home now my mom always enlists me with a duty.. 'can you clean out the mud room'.. 'can you clean out this closet' hahahaha because i have no problem throwing things out and quickly too hahaha!

  24. "Hoarder in training", too funny! 'Cause I kinda feel the same way. Such a fine line, no? I do try to follow that year rule, but sometimes I realize I just overlooked an item for the season and I know I'll end up wearing it again when the same season rolls by next year... I think anyways hehe... love the outfit, esp the shoes!:p

    1. I have visions of having the space/luxury to turn a spare bedroom into a closet where I can keep everything together, but then I wonder how out of control my closet and clothes-keeping would become! If there's space, I may have to fill it!

  25. you look darling Lisa! anything that doesn't equate to an outfit has to go for me! i've given away too many clothes that still had tags on them. so i'm really more cautious now when purchasing items. i purge a lot! if something doesn't feel or look right, it's in a bag heading to the donation center or given to a family member.

  27. Love that gingham shirt- I can never have too many of those! I just can't let go of things- and when I do I regret it! My recent coping strategy against future remorse is to take a picture showing how horrible the item looks- too tight, too short etc!

  28. Wow that blazer is all kinds of amazing! You really work it! I have a hard time getting rid of old things too. Even if I haven't worn them, I try to convince myself that at some time I will. I guess I'm a hoarder too!

  29. I used to do the "year" clear out but I didn't last year as obviously being pregnant meant most of my clothes sat unworn! This 365 project should help identify what I genuinely wear & what I hold on to but don't really wear- if there's photographic evidence you can't argue really!

  30. Such a cute blazer! I'm not sure how I feel about the "if you haven't worn it in a year, toss it" rule -- sometimes I discover things in my closet I haven't worn in a year or so & start wearing them again. But I definitely need to be more strict with my closet -- been running out of room! lol

    ReplyDelete
  31. i do the same thing - if you haven't worn it in a year, it doesn't belong (unless it's really seasonal and not work appropriate, like a halter top or really fancy dress and it still fits)

i LOVE this blazer - the edging on it is so cute and it looks great on you

  33. I am so terrible with cleaning out the closet. Much more comes in than ever goes out! I will hold onto things forever, even if I haven't worn them in a long time. I am getting better though and started to realize if I really don't like an item, I should get rid of it.

  34. My closet is full to bursting and that's not counting the stuff I have in 'storage', in my kids' closets, and the basement. My husband is on my case constantly to purge, and I am trying my best. Every time there is a clothing drive, I try to fill up as many bags as possible. My general rule is if I haven't worn it in a year, it heads into the "suspect" pile, and after 2 years, I will get rid of it. My husband is a lot more ruthless - it goes into the charity pile if it hasn't been worn in a year. It goes without saying that he rarely needs to purge anything and he has lots of room on his side of the closet.

Your pink flower brooch is so pretty!! Love the outfit!

  35. Ahhh I totally keep too much clothes just for the sentimental value, even though I haven't worn it in years. But I think I've done a pretty good job at whittling down things and getting rid of things that I don't care about, or they simply don't fit/look good anymore.

Love this blazer! I just got my hands on a similar one (though sadly not J.Crew) and I can't wait to wear it! :)
