This isn't going to surprise anyone with eyes, but 99.9% of the time, I take my own blog pics. I used to have a little Canon point-and-shoot that I used with the self-timer feature. I perched my camera on a little bar stool and raced around to take my outfit pics in a corner of my house that happened to get good morning light (that took a while to figure out though - check out my earlier outfit pics. Actually, don't). There was a lot of scurrying back and forth with the timer, and it was always 50/50 on what kind of pics I ended up with. Who said style blogging wasn't glamorous ...
I still take most of my own pics, but I've upgraded recently to a much nicer Panasonic Lumix that is a cross between a point-and-shoot and a DSLR. The camera has a flip-up screen so I can at least see if I'm in frame now before taking a pic, and a wireless remote that keeps me from having to run about all day. I am only really using the auto focus mode right now though, as I'm only proficient with about 2% of the camera's features, so ... yeah.
On rare lucky days, when our schedules (and outdoor lighting) align, BF takes my outfit pics. This has just started happening though, thus most outdoor pics involve me with some sort of grimace-smirk as I'm not yet used to dealing with someone else controlling the camera - who also happens to enjoy cracking jokes while I'm very busy trying to look chic, taller, self-important. Blog outfit pics do differ a bit from regular ole person pics though, so right now there's also a lot of directing from my end (yeah, really, I want a shot of my wrist).
Putting together an outfit post takes a lot of time though, and I already spend way too many minutes trying to put the ramble in my head into comprehensible words (not to mention the millenia I am sometimes in front of my closet for in the mornings trying to figure out what to wear), so you ladies who also
How do you take your blog pics? Do you take your own pics or have a photographer? When do you find the time to take your pics? How important do you think good blog pics are?

ReplyDeleteAw, thanks, Maria!
DeleteThis outfit is too adorable especially since you have matching tones with your outfit and shoes and then added that awesome pop of color with the necklace.
ReplyDeleteMy fiancee takes most of my outfit pics and we usually do it in the morning because otherwise I would look like a wrinkled mess, but now his schedule has changed so we can't do that anymore, just on the weekend when I can't be bothered to get dressed up. I'm wondering if I should invest in a tripod and take my own. I'm sure that will be all kinds of awkward and interesting to do, especially since I only know about 2% of my cameras features too!
I do half and half with my DSLR. I have a remote and nice tripod that I use when I am THOROUGHLY alone so that no one sees me and my boyfriend learned how to use my camera to help me taking photos.
ReplyDeleteI def need to get a tripod, but I am weird about taking pics by myself in public too - especially since I'd have to haul around my camera and a ghetto tripod, aka my bar stool, haha.
DeleteI have a nice heavy DSLR and no good lighting area...so no pictures/fashion bloggy for me. Maybe when I can trust my 4 yr old?! Husband also freaks out and take 2 pictures and does the whole "I can't take pictures, you do it!" thus the reason why I have 2.5 picture of me in the last 5 yrs! Yay for point and shoot with a flip screen!! I should maybe look into one of those....
ReplyDeleteOne good thing that has come out of style blogging is that I have my camera on my mind more often now, which means more pictures overall now - of trips, activities, day-to-day, memories.
DeleteLove the colors in this outfit...especially the pop of orange in that cute bracelet! I had my oldest son take my pictures for a few years and now since I have a full length mirror in my room I just take my own in there. The background isn't as nice, but it beats listening to my son complain about taking my picture AGAIN! =) lol
ReplyDeleteI used to take all my pictures indoors myself, but then when I moved to New York, I wasn't able to do so in my apartment anymore. Luckily, I made a blogger friend Alex, who now takes pretty much all of my pictures outdoors for me! :)
ReplyDeleteOoh, bloggers taking pics for other bloggers, now that's the ticket! Talk about the photog and the subject being on the same wavelength!
DeleteI totally take all my own outfit shots and I wouldn't have it any other way (unless my husband was a professional photographer). I've had him take my outfit photos before but I always feel like a total goofball and bossypants, so I just do it myself. I use a self timer (my camera doesn't have a remote that is compatible with it, boo!) and a tripod. I heft that thing all up and through the town. I like to take my own photos because it gives me control, BUT it is a pain. Trying to figure out the right light, did I get my bracelets in that pose?, what's up with the focus?, etc. etc.
ReplyDeleteKudos to you, girl. I have enough trouble taking my own pics at home, I can't imagine my bumbling around in public, haha.
DeleteMy husband takes all of my outfit photos and he actually seems to enjoy it! I try to take my photos on the weekends because I have more time (and more light) than during the week. I think my photos look better when I venture to new places but I don't always have the time. I'm hoping to upgrade to a DSLR one of these days when I have the extra funds!

I sometimes wonder if I shouldn't have just saved a bit more and purchased a DSLR instead of an in-betweener, but considering I have enough trouble with this camera, I can't imagine me bumbling around trying to figure out a DSLR!
DeleteHa, I do the Canon run-around dance. It's crazy town for sure. Even more fun when my son runs into the picture over and over. I can't imagine doing them outside though -- my neighbors would definitely think I'm insane.
ReplyDeleteHehe, my pup does the same thing!
DeleteThe new camera takes great pictures! Love this outfit! Great color combo!
ReplyDeleteMy husband takes my photos, which results in my making not-so-cute faces and laughing half the time. I did just recently purchase a little remote so I can attempt to do self portraits!
ReplyDeleteI know, I end up doing some awkward-face all the time when BF takes pics for some reason.
DeleteThe Mr. takes my photos and the kids are usually in the car saying, "are we done yet?" So, not glamorous at all. You do what you can, right?! I think your photos are fine;) I mostly look at the outfits and not the quality. Love the stripe dress with the teal underneath!! You're a babe!!!!

This is exactly my type of outfit! I have my camera on a tripod and just set the self-timer--I would love a flip screen and remote so that I could at least have some notion of what I'll look like!

Mmm yes I hear you! I take my own with a point & shoot as I did when I wrote at Running on Anthro. I just started up again (Hi again by the way! Still been reading) & whilst my pictures are rubbish they will do. Today's outfit has totally inspired me to attempt smartening up my navy & white stripe tunic with a shirt so thank you :-D

I think I have the same Canon you had. :D Taking photos is a pain, so I don't do it very often.
ReplyDeleteI have a Canon Powershot (don't remember the model) and a Panasonic Lumix FZ-something. That alone should tell you how much I know about cameras, haha!
DeleteGreat outfit, I have the same dress and I never thought of wearing a shirt under it. I take my photos with a self-timer on my iPhone. I wish I had time for something better because I do think good photos are essential to a good blog.
ReplyDeleteOne reason I wish I had an iPhone - it takes some fantastic pics. I didn't realize it had a self-timer too!
Delete"Taking one for the blog." I love that :-) I understand this change all too well. I upgraded to a compact system camera (a Sony) instead of a DSLR as well. I now wonder how I used my point and shoot camera for so long...
ReplyDeleteI'm the same way, though there are about 3453 extra buttons and features on this camera that I'll probably never be able to use proficiently!
DeleteYou look so cute! My husband is my slightly-unwilling photographer. I'd love to get a tripod so I could do it myself! I also want to start doing more close-ups of my outfit details...but one step at a time, I am still fairly new to this blogging world! I gave you a shout out today for inspiring my green and pink combo outfit!
ReplyDeletewww.colorfulcorporate.blogspot.com
Thanks, Jeannie, you looked fantastic!
DeleteSuper cute layering! My husband takes my pictures :)
ReplyDeleteI used to take pics with my Nikon (dSLR), tripod and remote. These days I just don't have the time or inclination so I use my Canon point and shoot and self-timer. Or sometimes the hubs takes photos with the iPhone. I definitely prefer good quality photos and like blogs that use them :)
ReplyDeleteP.S. Love the stripes!
Your outfit pics are still pretty awesome, you always get some great lighting and have a terrific genuine smile!
DeleteMy husband takes my pics. We used to do them at the end of the day but our schedules are little different so it was sometimes hard to synchronize. Now we do it in the morning before I go to work. Because I leave an hour before he does, I often push him awake, order him to put on pants and grab his camera. He is a patient man.
ReplyDeleteI love this! I've pretty much been coveting every outfit you post lately:)
ReplyDeleteI use a point and shoot and a tri-pod. Having my my husband take pics is so awkward and he claims I look good in every photo and then I see them and I look a hot mess! I'm hoping to upgrade to a dslr SOON. I need one for my business so I'm hoping I can write it off as a legitimate business expense. #winning
Ooh, double duty DSLR, fantastic!
Deletewow! I really love how you paired this dress with the statement necklace! These colors are just amazing!
ReplyDeleteoliviamoone.blogspot.com
I'm so impressed you take your own and I know what you mean how it's lucky when the 'stars align' to have someone take them for you. You look great and I LOVE that necklace. I actually try to find friends to take mine or I prefer to take them myself when I'm taking photos of my sister because I know exactly the details I'm trying to shoot

I love your dress! And the way you incorporated teal and coral in such a lovely way.
ReplyDeleteWhen I did outfit posts, my fiance would take photos for me most of the time (with his commenting and catcalls to go along with it haha). I also sometimes took photos by myself in the park near my apartment, where I would balance my point and shoot on a trash can and run into position after I got the timer going. It was always an adventure!
I came across your blog from the EA blogroll and had to comment because I have a Lumix too! I really like the camera and have spent a lot of time tinkering with it to understand the features. Only thing is I don't have a remote...I use a tripod and self timer myself but find it tough to do it in the morning because of the lighting situation and after work is tough too. It's taken a while to get the hang of it (and quickly to avoid laughing at my husband).
ReplyDeleteI also really enjoy your posts and love the color mix in your outfit!

I am liking my Lumix but not a lot of people seem to have one so it seems hard to get advice on its use. I am liking it though, but there are so many features on it! What model do you have? I have a Lumix FZ-something ... ;o)
DeleteLisa, you had me laughing because I'm still using the Canon and running around. HaHaHa That's why I admire fashion bloggers like yourself. It's work! You have to buy the outfit, or come up with one from your closet, accessorize, take a pic and then write a caption and post. That's why meaningful comments mean so much! Yes, we see the picture, but we sometimes forget all of the effort that went into taking such beautiful shots. So I applaud you! I love your dress and I swear you are the queen of layering. You have it down to a science. Your outfit and shoes are beautiful. I'm going to take a look at the camera you are using. Sounds great! That's why i beauty blog! HaHaHa Have a great week Lisa! :)

Aw, thanks, Kim!
DeleteOoh I am loving this look!
ReplyDeleteI take almost all of my outfit photos too. I use a tripod, Nikon and self timer (because I am too cheap to buy a remote) It works pretty well most of the time, though it means most of my pictures are in the same location, ha ha
http://www.closet-fashionista.com/
Haha, I'm too cheap to get a tripod!
DeletePeople say once you use a wireless remote, it's going to be hard to go back to a self-timer :) I think eventually I'll upgrade the body of my camera to one that can handle a remote, but for now, I'm telling myself I'm not missing much because I don't know any better, haha. Looking forward to seeing your fun experiments with this camera as you learn more!
ReplyDeleteI've had some pretty bad not-worth-blogging experiments so far, haha!
Deleteepps love this! all the pretty bright and fun colors!! i loveee your shoes omgoshhh LOVE!
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU, Lisa! For looking so chic and sharing your photo tips. You've got some of the best indoor photography around the blogosphere, and it's MORNING light, you say? I still have not found my sweet spot inside. Hubby takes my best pics by far, and I get lucky some days on my own, others not so much. I am glad not to be running 'round the camera between each and every pic tho' - that was seriously exhausting.
ReplyDeleteI don't think style bloggers have to be professional photographers, but it does help if you can see the clothes pretty well and there's a sort of photo style that you associate with a blogger, sort of like her writing. I do get a bit disconcerted by headless style bloggers and don't follow them in general, because well, it's rather a shock every single post an' all.
You must hide your remote well - this is the first time I've noticed it :) Or maybe I'm generally distracted by your amazing accessories and shoes.
I've got the morning light streaming in one side, and then afternoon light streaming in by the stairs. It's going to be hard to find the good light when it starts getting light later and dark sooner, though I've been known to run home around lunch and snap a few pics before too!
DeleteHehe, I used to be a headless blogger myself. One thing about showing my face is that it has also "forced" me to take more care with my hair and makeup!
Love this! My husband takes almost all my blog pics. We always try to find somewhere outside because I've never figured out how to get the lighting right inside. I just have a point and shoot and I'm just dream of the day I finally can purchase a DSLR. With winter coming I'm especially stumped about how we're going to get photos done. Might have to keep working on that indoor lighting situation!
ReplyDeleteI take all of my pictures with my Canon DSLR and I'm currently doing the run around dance each time. I crack myself up sometimes after running back and forth between shots. I have a tripod and I set the camera on the timer - it's a pain, but it works. I recently bought a wireless remote, but it's not working for some reason. Until I figure it out, I'll continue to run around for a little while longer. I usually take my pictures in the evenings, but I may have to reconsider taking them in the morning. Your pictures always look great and you look fantastic in this outfit!
ReplyDeleteMoody Girl In Style
Part of the reason I try to take my outfits in the mornings (most of the time when I have the time anyways) is so I don't look all disheveled and worn out! ;o)
DeleteI love this outfit!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love how the green and navy combo extends even to your shoes.
ReplyDeleteI take my photos as I'm leaving the house most of the time. I make my husband take them with my higher end point and shoot because he's cheaper than a tripod. We take them in the driveway or in my FIL's not-yet-a-garage because they have the best light. I think clear pictures are important, but I can't afford a super fancy camera. I'd probably spend the money on shoes instead.
Hehe, I'd rather get shoes too!
DeleteUsually via iPhone in a mirror which is why they aren't the best :p.
ReplyDeleteLoving the blue and green together!
Your fancy camera takes snazzy detail shots! I'm still on the ol' point and shoot on a timer, so I run around outside trying to get a good photo out of the 3 or 4 shots I take when no one is looking! there are definitely times that I only capture an empty frame!
ReplyDeleteThe quality of photography and er...modeling goes way up on my blog when I get the BF to act as photographer! The smiles are real and there are a lot more pictures to choose from!
These pictures are lovely- maybe I should upgrade soon? I'm using a point and shoot on a tripod with the timer set to take 3 photos after ten seconds. So yeah, lots of running around in front of the camera, behind it... lots of shots mid-blink...
ReplyDeleteHehe, I am a total mid-blink, mouth-agape person! ;o)
DeleteI didn't know you were taking your own pics. They're awesome!

ReplyDeleteYeah, I bet I'd have friends and family lining up to take my blog pics if I were making tons of money off of it, haha.
Deletei have a tripod and remote and go stake out fairly public places where people stare at me awkwardly. i've gotten accustomed to it. i miss my husband taking them. and you did a good job - having a flip screen on the camera is SO nice - my DSLR has one and it helps SO much.

You are brave girl. I couldn't smile or pose with random people looking at my awkwardly if I were out in public taking pics of myself. Plus I'm neurotic and I'd be worried about my camera all the time, haha.
Deletefor the first 2 years of my blog, I used my camera phone. I know! I'm currently borrowing a friend's camera, but I still have to take the pictures myself. The only bad thing is I work 12 hour days so it's dark when I leave and dark when I get home. Meaning I have to take my pictures at night under artificial lights. I have a light box that I use, but that's only good for product pictures. It's hard to take pictures of me doing my hair or makeup for example
ReplyDeleteYou've done pretty well taking your own hair and makeup pics - that curl tutorial was great!
Deletemy fiance has been gone for 2 months so Ive bee trying to use my tripod, I stink at it!
ReplyDeletehttp://coffeebeansandbobbypins.blogspot.com/
I pretty much forced my boyfriend to be an amateur photographer for the blog, but he's been enjoying it! He leaves for work super early and usually hits the gym after, so I scramble to get ready in the morning and we have about 15 minutes to take multiple pictures. I think you do a great job with your pics, and I admire you for being able to take such great ones by yourself! Love the outfit.
ReplyDeleteStephanie
I admire you for having a willing BF, and a good one at that! Having someone to take pics for you def takes a whole less time.
DeleteI love the stripes and the bubble necklace!! I use a timer and a tripod for my pictures!
ReplyDeleteThankfully my husband and I are both photographers, and we both work from home, so I'm lucky enough to have the time to take photos, the equipment to do it, and another person to snap them. It's kind of the perfect set up. Your photos look great though, as does that layered outfit :)

For now, I have just a little ol' point and shoot camera that I mostly use the self timer on, but I do love a great blog photo. You know, the ones that are all too perfect and involve a random field of some sort - unrealistic? yes, but pretty none the less. ;)
ReplyDeleteSequins&Stilettos
Really? well, you did an amazing job, Lisa, with the self timer! For me the hubby takes the pics, but he is not so much interested in photography and wants to finish it off as fast as possible! But still that is better than having to do with self timer!! I think photographs are important when it comes to style/fashion blog, but I feel the focus should be more on the outfit rather than anything else and your pics turn out great, and the outfit always is the focal point!

I love the awesome, unexpected layering! :)
ReplyDeleteLove the necklace! I have the same one in white and find it's so versatile, although a bit heavy on the neck lol
ReplyDeleteI love this striped dress layered on top of a shirt! And a bauble necklace can't never go wrong with any outfit! I usually take my own pictures with a timer and a tripod, and although I know I can do much more with my camera, I'm still in the process of learning all its features. Unfortunately, I haven't had much luck directing my bf or brother to take my pictures (thus, none of the pictures taken by them have appeared on the blog, yet!) Your pictures (indoors and out) always look awesome, and it seems as you always have so much fun taking them!

I want your shoes!!! And the shirt and dress layering is just perfect. LOVE.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty particular about my blog photos, but lately I just haven't had time to take any after work (or have been wearing just blah outfits that don't need to be photographed) - it's annoying looking for a perfect location and setting up a tripod, praying that nobody walks by and sees me, and then 98% of the photos turn out horrible because I'm blurry or not in the shot, or just look weird. I've wanted a camera that is remote-compatible (I also hate running around with the self timer!) and the Panasonic Lumix sounds pretty cool. I'll have to look into it!
First, I adore how you styled this dress! And second, I always like your pictures. You look great and it's easy to see the details in your fabulous outfits. I hope to someday upgrade to an actual camera for mine! :)
