Sometimes Insomniac

Sometime between the hours of 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. my big noggin usually drifts itself off to the land of nod. It doesn't take a whole usually to get me snoozing either. A few minutes of quiet conversation (sometimes even mid-con), some snuggles with the pup, or a bit of TV or Kindle-ing and I am out like a light. Never fails.

Now staying asleep - staying asleep is hard for me. A typical night for me involves me waking up for pretty much no good reason at least two-three times. And when I've got a big upcoming project or trip or something I am really looking forward to - forgetaboutit. I am up at 2:30 a.m. and pretty much in dreary wide awakeness until the sun starts peeping its way over the horizon. But I am still actively trying to go back to sleep, so I refrain from really getting up and about. So .... suffice it to say, I can typically get a whole lot of good thinking in during these bouts of insomnia.

An example of some recent insomniac mental meanderings?

My dog takes up a lot of room on the bed.

I'm thirsty and out of water by my bed. But the kitchen is all the way downstairs ...

Sorry, Shaun T, your Insanity workout holds no sway over me, but the NuWave Digital Oven sounds freakin' fantastic!

Did I pay that Visa bill?

Julie & Julia may have replaced The Devil Wears Prada as my new can-watch-it-all-day-long-without-getting-bored movie.

It's been cool enough lately that we can sleep with the window open and no A/C on - very awesome.

I need to keep my Kindle charger closer to my bed.

Yep, still scared of the dark.

Despite being wide awake, I am still too lazy to go to the bathroom.

I can't believe we paid $15 for a jar of honey and a half dozen peaches at the farmer's market this weekend.

My dog is a deep sleeper - and she kicks me in her sleep.

Yuck, eye crusties already.

What was that sound? Is that the house settling or is someone in my kitchen? Should I raise the alarm or go check it out myself? ... Better just wait for the possible perp to come up the stairs first. Unless it's not human ...

What kind of sleeper are you? What can give you a case of insomnia? What do you do about it and what usually is going through your head?

  2. I'm LOLing at your comment about paying 15 dollars for honey and peaches at the farmer's market! That is too funny. I always want the rare organic lavender infused honey that costs 10 dollars a bottle and my husband is like "Really? No, we are going to Kroger." Love your floral dress and bright shoes, btw. Just gorgeous:) xo

    1. Neither of us said anything when we bought it, but after we bought it home, we were like, "really?" Thankfully those were some darn good peaches and honey - but we still prefer supermarket honey bear, honestly!

Your bouts of insomnia sound way too familiar! Anything from getting kicked by the dog to work thoughts to an assortment of noises can keep me up for hours!

    1. For some reason, the dog doesn't seem that bothered when I accidentally kick or shift her, but when she retaliates, I'm like, "oh great, now I'm up."

  5. You don't look like you had a bad nite sleep. Always looks so fresh and energetic! I used to be a good sleeper. But not lately. I blame it on the doggie, blame it on hubby, blame it on the iced tea I drank at 2pm. I am starting to take baths at nites and I find that quite soothing and relaxing and help me stay asleep longer.

  6. My mind goes wild if I wake up in the middle of the night. Mostly to morbid thoughts, so I won't even go there!!

Lisa, I love that dress! The colors are so pretty!

  7. Oh wow, pretty - the colors of this dress are gorgeous! I can't seem to stay asleep either - usually I wake up around 2am - I've started to come downstairs for an hour and respond to emails/play on the computer because I get too frustrated tossing and turning in bed and watching the clock tick away at my precious sleeping time. I find that if I get up for that hour not only do I have some uninterrupted me time (yay! Whatever it takes, lol) but I can fall back to sleep a lot quicker when I go back up to bed.

    1. I've tried going downstairs and watching TV or doing something on the computer, but I find that for me, being up makes it worse. I ended up watching three episodes of Gallery Girls on Sat night/Sun morning - and that didn't even put me out!

  8. I sleep through the night, thankfully! But if I have a lot on my mind, sometimes I have a hard time falling asleep. Love both those movies too!! Great dress...perfect with those shoes!

  9. Most of the time I sleep through the whole night. I am a light sleeper though, so if I hear anything loud outside I'll wake up. If I have a lot on my mind, it's hard for me to fall asleep. And we don't let the dogs sleep in the bed...they're way too annoying and I'd never get a good night's rest with them.

  10. Hahaha! I can totally relate to a few of your mental meanderings you mentioned here (scared of the dark, out of water but the kitchen is too far, and too lazy to get up and go to the bathroom). When I lived alone in my apartment, I HAD to sleep with the TV on to get to sleep. If I had the volume too loud, it'd wake me up all night long, but I mastered the perfect volume and thus always had a good night's sleep. :) I sleep through the night most nights now, but occasionally wake up for no reason and can't get back to sleep. Love the dress!

    1. Oh yeah, don't start me in on the miserableness of still having to get up in the morning. When you finally doze off around 6:02 and about two seconds later it is 7:15 and time to get up!

  13. I used to be a great sleeper when I was younger, but as I get older I'm having more trouble sleeping. It takes me a while to fall asleep (especially if my husband is sawing logs next to me, haha!) and I usually wake up at least once in the middle of the night too. I also have a doggie bed-hog to blame for that one sometimes! I find that the more stressed I am, the less sleep I get too. My solution for not being able to sleep is reading, that usually helps me quiet my mind and get me back to sleep.
    Interesting topic and gorgeous dress!!

    1. I have a friend who would go on trips with his dad where they would share a room and it'd a contest on who fell asleep first because they were both snorers. If you didn't drift off fast asleep, then sorry, you're going to be kept up by some heavy duty mouth breathing for a while!

  14. This is such a funny post. I usually have the opposite problem though, it takes me forever to fall asleep but once I'm out, I'm out for good! We're are usually in bed at 10 but JB can go to sleep without the tv on and I can't sleep with the light so I wear one of those sleeping masks and then I get distracted but what's going on with whatever show it's on (even if I've seen it before) and so I put my ipod but then the headphones hurt my ears against the pillow, Gosh I'm a mess, so around 1 I'll finally fall asleep. At least I don't tend to wake up until the alarm goes off in the morning though so that's a good side :)

That dress fits you like a glove! and the colors are so pretty!

  15. leading up to the wedding i slept maybe 6 hours a night. i'd wake up around 4 and not go back to sleep until almost 7. it was horrible, but it helped me dropped weight.

now i still sometimes wake up and lay there. my mind wanders. i think about work. about family. friends. if this outfit would look okay with those pants. my cat. chinchillas. but, that's why i sleep in on the weekend. ;)

  16. Loving your bright colors for this outfit, you're lit up! Thankfully, I almost never have any trouble falling asleep. I'll sometimes wake up really early to drop the hubs off at the hospital, and when I try to go back to sleep, I think about this episode of Sesame Street where the Count Dracula was counting sheep as he drifted off. SO random I know, but it works :)

  17. I'm a sometimes insomniac, too. The thing is, though, I can asleep, once I get there. It's the "getting there" part that challenges me. I'm sorta afraid of the dark. LOL. and I don't like "quiet" when I got to bed. LOL. I'm a weirdo. I can sleep through noise. I think that it's noise that comforts me when I sleep. And yes, I'm a thinker, too. I definitely think too much. The pup takes up most of the bed, which is strange, because she's only 7 lbs. Oh my poor, hubby. hahaha.

    Lovin' your dress, Lisa!!!

    Hope you've been well. :)

  20. As you know, I have had my episodes of insomnia and it's never any fun. I try to keep busy too while I'm awake. I usually read a book or a magazine, write in my journal, watch television or I get on my computer and post something on my blog. I also end up making lots of lists of things that I need to do for the day, during the week or even the year. Surprisingly, I can get a lot done when I'm lacking sleep.

  21. You look really pretty in this dress!
I do have insomnia from time to time, when I can't stop my mind from running. It happens especially when I have a lot on my plate. You know what helps me? Getting out of bed, grabbing a book, and reading a few chapters sitting in a hard-back chair, like a kitchen chair. This sounds really weird, but since I'm not that comfortable sitting there, it makes me more tired than if I read in bed. Eventually I'm tired enough to go back to bed and fall asleep!

  22. I hate not being able to sleep. I usually try to force myself in to tiredness by reading - and seriously, how do dogs (even small dogs) take up more than half the bed??

Love the watercolor print on your dress, so pretty!

  24. Such a pretty dress! Love the chooz! I have a terrible time falling asleep. Even with 7.5mg of Melatonin I just can't shut my brain off. Then there are the "twitchy" calves. If I think about them, it feels even worse! Trying a new potassium remedy recommended by a friend for the first time tonight. We'll see!

  25. Lately, due to stress from work, I have had the worst tension in my neck and shoulders so I beg my Hubs for a neck rub that lasts more than two minutes for a slight resolution from the discomfort. Doesn't always work 100%, but hey, anything helps.

Those shoes - sigh - I'm a shoe girl and always will be. I think the color is just plain fabulous!

  28. I'm a terrible, terrible insomniac. We should totes Skype in the wee hours sometimes, except it sounds like we're both too busy trying to stay in bed to make it to the computer. I envy the insomniacs that make good use of their wakefulness. Me, I just get madder, and madder, and more determined to either go to sleep or burst a bladder. Whichever happens first :P

  32. OMG I am the same way. I can fall asleep anywhere, but when it comes to bedtime, like lying in a bed waiting to go to sleep it takes FOREVER because of all the weird little things in my head. Not to mention, I have really crazy dreams all the time. So I wake up confused and/or mad and/or sad. Like several times. LOL at your Insanity comment. I actually have the NuWave oven. Not because I wanted one, but because Patrick is a sucker for an infomercial. I think I've used it twice.
