Parts of Me ... are in Shorts

As ironic as this sounds, sometimes blogging affords me more freedom than talking or dealing with something in everyday life. I figure that "I'm safe" considering this community is like myself in many ways and use blogging as a brief escape from daily life, and thus, are supportive. That and most people I know actually don't know I have a blog and the few who do don't really ever read it anyways. 'Cause why read my blog when I am already right there jabbering in-your-face?

However, I also am not naive and know that all it would take is a few quick clicks of the mouse for someone to "find" me on the Internet. And that someone could be anyone - a loved one, a co-worker, a distant relative or acquaintance, some random creepy person. And they could react to it in any number of unexpected ways.

So, as "open" as I do feel like I can be on the Internet, I am also cautious well, as cautious as you can be when you're full-facing it on the Internet too. Though I'm not really talking about being cautious for security's sake (because we're all modern realistic people here and already know we shouldn't be spewing home addresses or naming the companies we work for at the same time we're lambasting them for all the see. We all already know this, right).

But I'm talking about cautious in how much of us we share.

I obviously strive to keep things light here in personal style blogdom, so aside from my peerlessly assembled ensembles [snort], you lucky ladies also get to deal with the randomness that comes spewing out of my brain. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's lame, sometimes it's just plain weird. But hopefully you go away with a sense of who I am.

However I choose to keep my blog life and real life separate, so other than in generalities, I don't talk about my loved ones, my job, the things I do in my daily life. I figure that is the easiest no harm-no foul move for me. Plus that way, my blog world stays light and fun - a nice place to escape to.

How do you determine how much of yourself to share over the Internet? How did you decide what's harmless shareable fun vs for-private-consumption-only?

  1. I a an EXTREMELY open person but also very private (I know, it couldn't sound more contradictory!) so it's hard when I blog I want to tell people about what is going on in my neighborhood, who I am related to etc, etc. but I don't because I realize someone could use it against me. I use to idea of a future employer finding it and whether or not they look at my blog and frown upon it. I never, ever talk about work!

  2. Linda, this outfit is fabulous. I love the color combo and you must give me that bag!!!

I'm by nature a private person, so it's interesting that I put myself out there in the internet where anyone can find me. I wonder how much of myself to share too especially considering that most of the time I'm talking fashion. I suppose it comes down to what makes you comfortable and that you're being authentic.

    1. I'm a pretty private person myself so I must be some sort of contradiction, haha. But it seems to be easier to post my thoughts and feelings instead of things that are happening in my life - you'd think that my thoughts would be more personal!

  3. Cute colors in this outfit...love it! I don't share a ton about my personal life...just the generals. I figure if I was a reader of my style blog I mainly want to read about style...so I try to stick to style with a little extra on the side. =)

  4. My BF doesn't like the whole blog thing for the simple fact that he feels it makes our life too public. I try not to share too much personal info, but I want fellow bloggers to get some sence of who I am! On well. Love these shorts! Blue and yellow are great together! I wore that combo this week too!

  6. i am an open book on my blog but i do not really share pics of my son (and if i do, it is never really straight on pics). i also do not share my address but after a recent scare with an ex showing up at my home after 16 years (that is a story i have not shared on the blog for fear he is reading) it is REALLY quite frightening how easy you can find your exact address & personal info online. i never used my full name on my blog either until i started writing for publications and was featured in a magazine article. so if you type my name now it pulls them right up also. kinda scary stuff. but i do also keep it lighthearted on the blog for the most part as well. =) you look super cute in those shorts girl.

    1. Awesome about your writing! I am not sure what you write about professionally if it is not about style or fashion, but it must be interesting trouble to juggle two online "personas" - style blogger AND writer.

Like you, only some of my close friends know about my blog and they don't read it, but I still try not to disclose too much.

  8. Indeed...I sometimes wonder if my random clothing obsessions minus the personal touch is enough, or if it's just frustrating to read. But then I love your warblings, so I hope that's enough. I do appreciate being able to read about others thoughts and experiences though, so maybe it's just a question of balance!

I LOVE these colours with the vibrant print!

    1. I don't find your posts frustrating in any way. In fact, between your writing style and your dressing style, I feel like I'd love to get to know you in real life - and in a teeny tiny blog way, feel like I already kind of know you. ;o)

  9. I too have tried to keep my blog hidden from the majority of people in my personal life (other than immediate family) so that I have the freedom to discuss whatever I want without having to worry that certain people are reading it. I don't discuss work much unless it's a funny story of something that happened since I don't want to become one of those people that gets fired from their job for what they wrote on their blog :)

  12. I didn't know those were shorts! I love the idea. I think I'll try it with a green sweater/navy polka dot combo as soon as the weather is *just right* for the pairing.

    Thanks for the idea!

  13. Ugh..I struggle with this so much. At first I didn't think much about having my last name as part of my blog title but then I started writing more personal things & started having heartburn about how much was "out there." I even created another blog that doesn't include our name but I haven't decided whether to transfer everything over yet. I only have 1 family member who reads & everyone else is people I don't know. But sometimes I think if my husband read it he might be pissed about how much info is out there about us. It's actually another reason I've been blogging less lately. Sorry this doesn't answer much except to say that I definitely struggle with it!

    1. I totally commiserate with what you mean. I def am making a conscious effort at not discussing the people in my life (other than in passing) because regardless of what is written, I can't help but to think, now how would I feel if I found out so-and-so wrote about me?

    2. I feel like by not discussing people in my life, it is playing it "better safe than sorry!"

  14. When I was on student council our Manager told us that if it wasn't positive not to say it, especially on social media where it could reflect badly on us and those around us and certainly not if it would hurt someone else and I follow that for my blog too. There's nothing I dislike more than a Debbie downer all the time although sometimes letting it out is better than keeping it bottled up!

    1. People can obviously post or say whatever they want online, but I think they sometimes forget that the reach of their voice gets amplified over social media. Someone wants to complain about a certain person over FB or something, that's fine, but they better be well aware that their comments can reach that person and be ready to deal with the consequences.

  15. I'm super open - but I try not to overshare to the blogging world. There are parts of my life that I'm bound to talk about more openly than others, but sometimes I forget how easy it would be for someone random to find me (like you mentioned). I think it's fine to share life details as long as you're not giving too much away. At the end of the day we DO live in a world where internet creeps and predators exist, so it's smart to be careful. Love this outfit by the way, I am loving the mustard and navy combo.

  16. Being so far from family and friends, and not being able to speak to everyone individually and regularly, means that my blog has been a GREAT way to keep in touch with everyone. This usually means providing some details, but naturally not all. I try not to overshare in real life, so I wouldn't do it on the world wide web either.

The structure-free nature of the blog also means it can't be categorised as style, lifestyle or otherwise. It is just Usha's blog, one that I hope has a voice and is a reflection of my personality.

    1. It's always a precarious balance for things when it is something you put online. I always enjoy your posts because I think you have great style, I like hearing about your dancing, plus even though I'm originally from NY, blogs like yours always shows me new places and treasures that I've never been to in the city and give me ideas on things to do next time I visit.

  17. Oh, wow, your orange bubble necklace looks GREAT. For some reason, I cannot pull those things off :P and ended up buying a teeny orange statement necklace instead. Also, I'm insanely jealous of anyone who can wear mustard next to her face, and look beautiful, like you do.

Because I work for lawyers, I'm very limited by attorney client privilege. If I talk about my job, it's only the things I know I can say, and I try to keep it professional, positive, and amusing if applicable. I do talk about my family, partly to raise awareness of Sickle Cell Disease, and partly because I am proud of them and well, sometimes they take the blog photos or jump in them. I do try not to post endless pics of the four-legged kids although I know any post with the word "dog" in it gets a lot more hits :o

  21. I also try to keep my blog topics pretty light and mostly focused on fashion, personal style and some random lifestyle topics. I've had some friends suggest that I should blog more about local shops and restaurants, but doing that makes me nervous. After a while, it would be pretty easy to find me in my town. I don't mind being on the internet for my blog, but I like having some kind of privacy. BTW...loving your outfit today. The colors look perfect together! Enjoy your weekend!

I know it's rare, but I can't help but to think sometimes, oh great, go ahead and tell that stalker/robber that you're not going to be home tonight and will be hanging out a XYZ.

  27. When I decided to start blogging I tried to have very clear how much I want to separate my private life from what I was sharing on the blog. As in your case, not many people, except for my very close friends and family know about my blog, and they don't usually talk about it. And when they do, I usually don't give the topic as much importance as if I were talking to another fellow blogger. So far, I've felt somehow 'safe' keeping it that way. Back to your outfit, I love that chevron print on those shorts and how great they look on you with that mustard sweater and the bubble necklace!

I definitely decided I was going to have a style blog not a "lifestyle" blog so that is how I decided to not share really personal things. You can see some pics of my fam. if you chose to follow my instagram but that's it. It just didn't make sense to make it personal when it's supposed to be about fashion...light and an escape like you said!

  33. you spark such great conversations and thinking! sometimes i get caught up in assuming i only have 10 followers who are all girls around my age who are my friends because i seem to have a core group of people who comment on most of my posts and that is who i think they are. it's hard to remember that anyone could find my blog and be reading what i am writing, no matter how mundane. i try to always think, "would i care if my mom/boss/coworker found my blog and read this?" it helps me to take a step back and analyze what i am putting out there. thanks for your thoughts on this and getting me to think about it a little more!

  39. I think about this topic a lot! I haven't started a blog for this very reason (among a few others), but the idea that parts of myself and my life would be so public makes me anxious about beginning one. I don't think there are any hard and fast rules, and in fact, I find it admirable when bloggers are willing to bare it all, but I think no matter what persona you put out on the internet, actually knowing and individual and knowing who they are just as a blog reader are still very different. To an extent, I feel like all blog personalities are just facades that get put on the internet, which is comforting and confusing all at the same time. In my opinion, you navigate this gray area very well while still keeping it honest by expressing some of your uncertainties about the whole concept. Thanks for the post on this subject, and as usual, I love your outfit!
