Variations on a Theme

pink & floral  stripes & shorts

Last time I did a Variations on a Theme post, it was the color combo of punchy orange, blue and white I couldn't keep myself away from. (I still can't stop wearing the bright orange-red, just ask my friends who are tired of seeing me in "modern red" - thanks, J.Crew).

This week? Thanks to a outfit by Hannah, I'm in lust with the whole blazer, shorts and stripes combo. I'm liking this because it is a more put-together version of my typical summer weekend uniform - shorts with some sort of cotton top. The blazer is a great addition for too-cool indoor spaces and can easily be discarded when going outdoors, and the flats keep the look casual.

Here are two recent outfits with my take on the look - one being more traditional prepped out, and the other being a bit more funky but I think still very wearable. (Sorry for the date stamp, I somehow turned it on by accident. However, pup decided to make an unscheduled guest appearance - i.e., she decided to lay right down underfoot while I was taking pics and refused to move. Don't fall for her "oh woe is me" look, haha).

What combinations of pieces are you in love with recently? What are your go-to ensembles as the temps rise?

  1. I love the shorts / blazer combo. I just picked up a pair of those J. Crew shorts and I will definitely be pairing them with a blazer now.

    1. J.Crew gets me every year with their chino shorts. You think folks have already figured out the colors of the rainbow by now, but oh no, every year J.Crew comes out with a handful of new hues I don't have and need, need, need. ;o)

  3. I just got a pair of cobalt shorts yesterday so I'm taking notes on your styling idea! But it is SO hot here, I think I may not be sporting long sleeves and blazers again till the fall, sigh.

    1. Oh no, those blazers did not last long outdoors this past weekend - shoot, I didn't last long outdoors this past weekend, haha.

  5. That striped blazer is fantastic! I'm lusting after it more than I have for anything in ages. I may have to go check out the Forever 21 version you linked; too bad the lapels aren't as cool.

    1. No I haven't been able to find another striped blazer with quite the same lapels - but F21 keeps coming out with different black & white striped knit blazers every few months.

    1. I have the tee in that same pink and it has been hard to not want to go outdoors clad head-to-toe in bright pink neon. And a sweatshirt in almost the same shade too.

  8. Great way to wear shorts! I adore how shorts can be dressed up with a blazer and love rocking that on the weekends. Too bad we couldn't wear shorts to the office!

    1. Me too - I only wear bermudas to the office. Though, I've done with the short shorts to the office before, years ago - short shorts with a button-down and kitten heels. I thought I looked great - all I can think of now is cringe!

  9. I love this theme- it's brilliant! I've recently realized how essential stripes are to grounding floral prints, and I don't know how to wear them any other way!

I also just now realized how sad my wardrobe is without a patterned blazer (you are sooooooo smart for having picked up that striped beauty so long ago!)

    1. I was lucky in snagging this blazer, I think - it sold out before it hit sale. And I adore it - it instantly brings interest to any outfit. That's probably why a ton of retailers are carrying striped blazers now - they know it just works!

  14. I really love both outfits! That floral blazer is to die for!! I seriously need more blazers in my life but I feel like every time I see them in the store I can't figure out how to wear them so I never purchase. Need to get over that & take the plunge.

These are great summer looks. My go-to when it gets hot is usually a maxi - dress or skirt. And I almost always grab my jean jacket for those AC obsessed places.

    1. I think getting a light or knit one and wearing it in place of a cardi may work. I like the knit ones because they are more cas and it doesn't look like you threw a business jacket over a pair of jeans. Or one of those light flowy ones that don't add a bunch of weight or warmth for the summer evenings. I say this because I adore blazers of all kinds!

    1. I'm still warming up to flat sandals and I think the trina is the ticket - that little heel gives it just enough "oomph."

  19. I also really like the look of blazers and shorts paired together. I've been searching for a striped blazer like the one you are wearing! A+O had the perfect one but it is an older season model and no longer available :(

    1. Don't you hate that? Something you kind of looked at but didn't really consider when it was out - then you realize you need it in your life but then by then there's like one left in the entire continent and everyone else is searching for it!

  22. LOVE this--a blazer with shorts! I need to try this since I'm always looking for ways to be dressy casual! My go-to in miserable weather? My running shorts and a tank top....oh, wait, I can't say that...it's um.....um....it's running shorts and a tank top. I can't take the heat.

    1. I'm all about light cotton layers in the heat too - shorts for sure and some sort of preferable flowy top. I can't stand clothes sticking to me in the heat!

  23. I like the look, another blazer lover here!I don't own any floral ones though, but after seeing this, I think I might give it a shot. I wear capris mostly, I don't know if I would look too over dressed for the weather. Maybe a short sleeve blazer would work better? Say 3/4 length, similar to the alice and olivia you linked to.

  24. I really like both outfits, I wouldn't be able to pick one over the other! fabulous, well done! :)
