Strike a Pose, There's Nothing to It

minty

Does the above pic cover about everything? When it comes to "the standard" of style blogger pic poses, I think I've got it all down to one image - pigeon-toe, staring down, demure smile, hand-on-hip, hand-in-hair. Check, check, checkity-check.

My pose is supposed to convey to the entire interweb that I am fashionable - well duh, that is a given, hello [snort] - yet humble, cute, a smidge self-conscious and just-the-right-amount of awkward. I am in fact, just like you! when you're out with your friends standing pigeon-toed, staring on the ground smiling while you're grabbing at yourself and poking at your head.

I love blogging, I really do. Style blogging is a great hobby for me that has allowed me to turn getting dressed into something more fun. I'm definitely a bolder dresser than I used to be pre-blog. And to be in this community with all your stylish ladies? The comraderie is fantastic and the outfit inspiration is better than anything I could ever ween off a magazine or TV show.

But sometimes I can't help but to laugh at myself. I mean, I get all dressed up and take pics of myself. Then post them on the Internet for all to see. I spend time staring into this little plastic clicky box, smiling and throwing back my hair, all the while trying to look as slim and lengthy as possible. And honestly, my body only knows how to do so much.

Pursed duck lips. Flamingo legs. Kriss Kross make you wanna jump, jump. Some sort of beverage in hand, as long as it is Starbucks or in a clear container with a lid and straw. Smile. Don't smile. Big ole "sunnies" everywhere - to be fashionable or anonymous? Look to the side. Up. Down. Stand like Superman. Squat. Splay. Oh girls, I think I've done it all when it comes to outfit pics - and some to not-so-great success.

What I have learned is what angles work and don't for me. That Superman poses work for Superman but not 5'2" asian chicks with big heads. That taking a pic doesn't mean that I mean to automatically revert into staring-and-standing-straight-at-the-camera-like-a-stiff-zombie pose. I can have fun with me, be comfortable with it, and if I'm feeling a bit goofy or don't know where to put my arms, that's fine.

What are your favorite go-to outfit photo poses? What do you wish you'd see more (or less) of in outfit pics? And what do you find plain ole silly about fashion blogging but still do it?

  1. Oh my goodness, you are hilarious! Yes, I've often lamented the typical poses that bloggers turn to, the head/hair grab is particularly odd. But I'm guilty of all of these as well. My husband always tells me to try different poses, but definitely in a hand-on-hip rut. :)

  2. OH MY GOSH!! I have these shoes! I got mine from VonMaur for only $19 and they are so fun to wear! And I totally agree about the blogging poses, I feel ridiculous when posing for them because they feel so freaking fake.

  3. HAHAHA. Fashion blogger poses are pretty funny. I really hate the posing part of taking outfit pics. That's why I can only take my photos with no one around. I feel silly doing it out in public for all to see. My favourite pose is in the seated position. Because, really, most of us sit all day at our desks. It's the most realistic, I think.

This dress is super cute. I hear there are lots of new items at H&M now, I need to get my booty over to a store ASAP!

  4. LOL - I have long given up taking amazing outfit photos with my dSLR - these days I have my standard hand on hips, slight angle pose that I use when quickly snapping photos in the garage at work. I love to document what I am wearing, I love the inspiration on the internet, but I have decided that I also love doing other things, getting dressed is just one of them.

I love the color of that dress and can't believe it's from H&M - I never have such luck when I shop there!

  5. I love that dress. I need to find the closest H&M. My pose portfolio is pretty slim. I think I have 3-4 poses. I've come to realize I HATE my profile. I look best looking straight at the camera. I'm also super embarrassed about taking outfit photos in front of people.

  6. Hahaha, this is so true! I'm only beginning with my outfit poses...but it's so frustrating running back and forth between camera and where I want to stand for the picture, then I have about 2 seconds to get into a pose before the shutter clicks. And don't even get me started on when I run to my position and then see a neighbor. I suddenly panic and pretend I was just going to water the flowers or something (in 4 inch heels with my hair all done up?) Loved this post and love your outfit as usual...the dress is amazing!

    1. I tried pics outside my house a few times, got random pings from people in passing, then figured I got enough to worry about with just making sure I look OK, I don't have the time to make sure my background all behave too! ;o)

  7. Haha, this is such a funny topic. I really should watch more America's Next Top model because I always do the same poses. I do the hand on hip thing but I think it's awkward to stare at the ground instead of the camera, even if that makes my photos less fashion-like.

  8. I'm wearing the SAME dress today! Except mine is a dark blue (I wore it on the blog way back here: http://cairelchronicles.blogspot.com/2012/01/cairels-closet-comfy-cute.html) but will prob do another post with it this week. I love the mint color & the heels!

I'm so with you on all this except I'm still learning how to pose. Even though my hubby takes most of my pics now I feel SOOOO awkward posing! I try to take cues from my fave bloggers & pay attention to how they (you) pose but as soon as I get in front of the camera I freeze up!

Despite that, I am have learned soooo much from reading style blogs (& Pinterest). I am so much more creative in my closet now & shop in a different way now too. It has really opened my eyes to how fun & easy fashion can be!

  9. Oh girl. I have a standard 10 or so poses that I pull out for every shoot. It annoys me sometimes but often I am too much in a hurry to think of anything new. It really is silly in the end, isn't it?

Love your minty dress and that great flower pin!

  10. So funny b/c it's so true! Since I don't show my face you'd think I'd care less about posing but alas, the ego still gets in the way and still wants to look "slim" albeit "slim" headless haha... Have you read this piece? http://notsolonelylondoners.wordpress.com/2012/05/13/how-to-post-like-a-fashion-blogger/

  13. I am in love with this dress - am wondering tho' am I too old for it? :P

I'm a 5'3" chick with a big head. Blog poses are soooooo silly...and important. I do find myself wondering how I got into the habit of sharing my daily career wear, and wondering if I can stop (yikes!) and still not finding quite the perfect backdrop and/or pose for me, partly because I have to grab pics on the fly. For some reason, looking down at my shoes seems best, and I have to take 20 pics to get one good one, or sometimes none :o

You are right- we've all tried just about every pose out there an I feel as though my tried and true poses are down to about three. Yep, I'm original. ;) now to wear my pants backwards...

  17. Haha, that pose does say it all! I always do the same poses, it's ridiculous. When I try out new ones, what looks good in my head just comes out awkward in the photos. But I think that's part of the fun :) I agree that sometimes when I think about what I do for the sake of fashion blogging, it's pretty laughable! I love this minty dress with that flower too!

  18. Oooh, I love that dress! I don't live near an H&M, so I've never been able to fully appreciate the low $$$ goodness. I'll have to visit someday...

A personal style blog is different from a craft, DIY, or even just a style blog. There's something about the picture of YOURSELF that makes you feel...weird? Silly? Like an idiot? For me, I worry that people may think that I'm being a show-off--"Look at my great clothes, my awesome haircut, my envious accessories. Look at me. Look at me and BE JEALOUS." The physical act of posing isn't really the problem for me. It's almost the POSTING that does me in sometimes.

But I do it because I like it, and I never look at other bloggers I respect and admire and think they are showing off. I think there is a lot of love and acceptance (and copycatting--but in a good way!) in the personal style blog community.

And as for poses...my favorite pose would have to be "Aloof Glance Away From The Camera."

    1. I think the same as you do. I admit, I am kind of scared of telling my friends about my blog because I think they'd think it is frivolous and self-indulgent - which it totally is in a way. But, like you, when I read other blogs, I just think of what a nice outfit it is, or what a great color combo, or why didn't I think of pairing that skirt with that kind of top before ... it's like reading a fashion mag but more interactive, fun and realistic!

  22. As you know I am still quite new to blogging (mine is more of a working mom fashion blog I would say,) but I seriously only have 2 poses I ever do! I really need to expand my repertoire! It doesn't help that my "photographer" IE my husband, is always rushing me! I guess I need to invest in a tripod...and a better camera!

My mom totally doesn't get the fashion blogging at ALL. Her response, when I told her I started a blog about what I wear to work, was "What is a blog, and why would anyone care about what you're wearing?" Gee mom thanks for the support!

I read fashion blogs to see what's out there, what other women are wearing to work and play, and what the trends are around the country. I LOVE reading other ladies' blogs and find them so inspiring. If I can ever inspire anyone with my own blog, I'd be so happy!

  24. I do enjoy fashion blogs (especially yours), but the pigeon-toed stance thing Drives. Me. Batshit. What are we, five years old?

I have to get over the top of it to be able to take in the outfit being modelled.

Here's hoping fashion bloggers everywhere can just relax and not worry so much about the pose since it's the outfit that onlookers are more interested in.

  30. So funny and so true! And my husby being my photographer isn't much help since he never tells me about the flaws (why didn't he say something about my shirt all bunched up!). He snaps a bunch quickly and tells me you should be able to get something from the bunch. :/

I never know what to do with my hands and ever since reading something about some pose looking like you have to use the restroom, I've become even more self conscious.

You're looking pretty cute as usual. The dress with the neutral accessories is fab.

I do think it's silly at times, and get embarrassed taking pics where other people can (gasp!) watch while we take them. My husband doesn't make me laugh when he takes my pic, and I certainly can't think of anything funny enough to make me open-mouth laugh/smile candidly. But I am more relaxed with a self-timer than my husband taking them. Perhaps I'll loosen up soon? ha!

  33. haha yes i totally understand it can seem a little goofy sometimes, i think because most of us are probably awkward in real life, i find most people probably don't feel super comfortable taking pictures of themselves! but it has definitely like you said made me try new things and become more comfortable with things i wasn't as comfortable with before and i think that is a good thing, doing things that are a little outside your comfort zone to become more well rounded :D
