Friday Mocktails

I've been lagging in my Friday Mocktails feature recently because - shock of shock - I haven't had much to complain about. But this past week? Oh boy, it's like the Whine gods saved it all up and had it overflow all at once, because my people tolerance meter is hovering near E right now ...

BF and I are considering joining a softball league later this summer, so we decided to go out and throw some balls around for practice. Well, I am apparently really good at catching softballs - with my face. The area around my right eye was literally unrecognizable for about two days with swelling. Then it died down and I was left with a purply-black eye and cheek. Lucky you gals did not have to see that (though if you look closely at my pics this week, part of my cheek is still yellow-green) because I went through the worst of the recovery late last week ...

... when I had to go to an important company conference. There was not enough concealer in the world to cover that up.

My work laptop is working so slooooooooowly that tasks which normally take about five minutes to complete now drag out to about 45 minutes. Seriously. My IT guys have checked it out numerous times, run a bunch of virus scans, and still, a whole lotta nada. Work frustration aside, things like this make my insides tie itself up into knots because I can't do anything about it.

You know the type of people. They kind of creep up on you quietly and when you turn around, they are just standing right behind you all silent with this half-grin on their faces. They have to tell you something but didn't want to "disturb you." So instead they just stand there with an expectant look on their faces and just wait. And when they do finally speak to you and you're done? You try to go back to your own business. And the creepers? They are still standing there. Not in your personal space but right there. Looking at you. With that half-grin.

Sitting down for lunch with a friend. Having someone you only kind of know just show up and they decide to sit down next to you. So now you can't really talk to your friend and you don't want to be rude and ignore almost-random person. So you try to make conversation with friend and include almost-random person. Which just means you don't really get anywhere - friend on one side who now doesn't want to share info because of stranger, and stranger who doesn't really get what you talk about. And you end up with one helluva awkward lunch.

First thing I do each morning is let the dog out. We live in a townhouse, so I need to walk her around on a leash. It being the first thing though, obviously I look less than spectacular. I am barely out of my PJs. My hair is sticking out in all directions. I may very well have remnants of Clearasil across my forehead. So I'm never overly thrilled to see neighbors at that time of day, especially when they not only wave but start making their way towards me. Do they really want to talk to me at this time of day? My mind has barely warmed up past inhale, exhale.  Blink, blink.

I was all scared/shocked/proud a few weeks back when I made the leap and cut a bunch of my hair off. I felt lighter and even a bit edgy with my new 'do. Except that due to hair growth or my own lack of ability to style my hair now, whatever bit of edge has slunked itself away. And my hair is still frizzy. Which a lot of the time now, makes for a meh-worthy hairdo.

Nothing to read now that I am done with the Hunger Games trilogy. And realizing that there are people who don't get it - like my co-workers - when I ask them "real or not real?"

So please feel free to get some of your Whine off your back here. This is a no judging zone, we're all here to commiserate with each other because sucky things just happen sometimes. But take this space as a place to dump it and leave it, so you can go about your lovely lives and enjoy your hopefully epic weekend. It's Friday, it's mocktail hour, so what do you have to whine about recently?

  1. Ok, you nutty girl, that is a whole lot of crazy information. :)
But in the end, have you decided to join the softball league or not?

  2. Haha, OMG, your tales have me on the floor. :) Love it.

I think the creepers stay away from me because I give a REALLY REALLY REALLY good death stare. I normally am all open and friendly, except when I just can't be, and I have been told my death stare could freeze warmed french butter. Eep. (I had no idea I was doing it until I was older when a good friend of mine let me know that sometimes I might just want to think about "softening" my face when I was irritated. LOL. Good friend, I must admit, now I at least try not to scare small children and puppies, if I can.)

So this must be a "dina" thing, as I clearly have been doing that look forever. Check this photo of me as a tot. Ha. That's the true death stare.

I have nothing really to whine about right now, but I will *maybe* admit to being a bit annoyed that I don't get enough sleep because of my newborn's constant need to eat, but that annoyance goes away and fast when he smiles at me. ;)

  5. I think it's just one of life's unfair rules that when you're all made up and perfectly put together, you run into an old boyfriend who's down on his luck and wants to borrow money. On a really bad day, you will be accompanied by your mother-in-law, and the ex will be drunk and smelly.

On the other hand, when you're in dirty gardening clothes and your hair needs an intervention, that's when you remember that you have to get something postmarked today, and as you dash to the post office, you crash into the ex who has done well, and his current SO who is a tall thin natural redhead.

    1. I've literally ducked and ran before in a supermarket because I thought I saw an ex. I never got confirmation it was him because there was no way I was going to go back while I was mentally unprepared and in flip flops!

  6. Oh Lisa! I am so sorry. When it rains it pours, eh? My main sources of frustration this week involve my ex and my sister, so I'll spare you. But I do hope that your face heals up all right and the creepers keep their distance! Love that flower pin and the PRETTY yellow dress! Cheer up doll! It's the weekend! And PS--your hair still looks very cute on you!

  7. fractured my tailbone last week and I still can't do anything. that's my main whine.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I love your outfit and the pretty flower on your cardigan.
My main whine is my injured foot which has been getting progressively worse over the past year. The doc who did the 2nd opinion is an orthopedist and I asked him to do the surgery since my podiatrist is on vacation in July - the best time for me to have it done. A few days ago I thought I was all set and ready to go, but this morning I get a call today from the orthopedist's office. He'd rather assist in the surgery since it isn't his usual type of operation-now WTH am I going to do? If I can't get this done in July, due to work commitments, I have to wait until late November. I'm in varying degrees of pain every day, so I don't walk or exercise much...end result of that...nothing fits right and I am beyond annoyed. I'll be downing Advil this weekend and trying to do some floor exercises so I don't turn into jell-o, all while being really hungry as I try to radically reduce my intake. This is not how I wanted to start the summer.
    Thanks for letting me vent!

    1. Yeah, I'm relegating myself to the cheering section - though I'll probably still get hit by an errant ball there! ;o)

  11. Lol I totally get you when there are creepers who come up to your desk and just stand there and don't say a word while you are typing away and then suddenly they may "ahem" and give you the shock of your lives. Can you just say excuse me or make a more grand entrance?! Totally understand about awkward lunches too haha. We have someone that loves to cut into conversations while we are busy talking about something and they say something random just to get into the conversation.
Okay that's my whine :) and ouchies for that softball!
    Love the yellow dress :)

  12. First of all..this outfit is SO.fabulous!! Love the dress!

I'm with ya on the creeper thing. I sit at the front desk at our office & when certain people are leaving for the day they do that exact thing. Just stand there until I turn & acknowledge them then they say "OK see you tomorrow." Really?!? You couldn't just say that while you were in motion?! I suppose I can't complain too badly because when I first moved to this desk EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. someone would walk past my desk they would say hi or try to strike up a conversation somehow. When I'm looking at my computer screen I can only barely see who's walking past out of my peripheral vision but I think people always thought I was looking at them & wanting to chat. It took a long time of ignoring & then acting annoyed to train them.

    1. At my old office, a lot of people actually ended up putting up small mirrors on their cube wall so they can catch the creepers without having to turn their heads. We had a creeper epidemic at my old office, haha.

  13. Oy vey! First, I really love that cardigan! The colors and the print are so pretty and totally what my eye has been catching lately.

So...Today my phone died. And not in the "I forgot to plug it in last night and the battery is dead" kind of died...but like actual phone death. From 100% charged to shutting itself off in less than 4 hours. I used my lunch hour to go to Verizon to get a replacement....Only to find out I'm well past the warranty and have to purchase a whole new phone...Even with an upgrade available that costs money. The only free phones I could get wouldn't have the capabilities I rely on so heavily (gps, email, radio, etc.) so even though I managed to spend less than $100...Its' 100 more then I wanted to spend. Since I'm going on vacation next week.I could have used that money for souvenirs! Oh well...Im going on vacation so why do I care?! :)

  16. Lisa- I absolutely love the flower pin you added to cardigan, love!~ Few thoughts on hair- I am frizzy too, I got Infiniti Pro by Conair Spin Air Rotating Styler ( you can Google it, I got mine from Amazon)- what a nifty little tool. Makes my hair smooth in no time,seriously- 15 m in tops on semi-wet hair. I can't live without it- took it on a vacation.

  18. Oh Lisa...you are too funny. I'm sorry about your softball injury. I never played the game because of my fear of getting hit in the face. And I can't believe that you finished the Hunger Games Trilogy already. Have you figured out what book your going to read next?

I agree with you about the creepers. The way that my office is set up my computer is on a separate desk and my back is always to the door. The creepers just come to the doorway and wait....it's very weird. Why don't they knock on the door if they have something to say? That's all I have for my whining this week.

    1. I was actually intrigued by the Fifty Shades trilogy and read a sample of each book from Amazon - and call me weird, but I ended up downloading the last book in the trilogy to read. And though I totally get why loads of women get all hot and bothered by those books, for me, it was too much of the same - I was almost like, get to the point, will this not end, haha?

And yes, I spend a lot of time trying to convince people to read the Hunger Games...because otherwise they look at me like a crazy tween fan.

  23. Your weeks sounds like it was filled with a lot of ups and downs. You still manage to look wonderful and place a beautiful smile on. I love this outfit especially your yellow dress and flower pin.

My week consist of looking for a dress all week for this wedding. Then finally finding one, but only after I got stuck with my husband and his annoying best friend. He made stupid jokes the whole trip and suggest I wear the most horrible dresses. Then he begins to say what he will do when he has a girlfriend to make her not go shopping with him. I wanted to scream!!

Working with weird people is what I do all week, sometimes I rather not be so friendly. Since crazy people seem to think I want to hear their life-long problems.

My week ended great my husband best-friend(not the annoying one) got married on Saturday and had a wonderful ceremony/reception.

I am soooooooooo mad that I read that stupid freaking zombie story out of Florida. I hate to even drop it here, but it's been on my mind for a week now. Ugh. I had a bad dream the day after reading it and I *still* can't get all that crap out of my mind. I need to stick to the live puppy cam and vids of laughing babies.
