Don't Mess with Mister In-Between

Being a round-headed person pretty much means that most everything else on my head is round - especially my cheeks. I grew up as big-headed chubby-cheeked tomboy with short fat curls, which meant that until puberty, I was the subject of much adult-led cheek pinching. Aw-inducing for others, painful face for little Lisa.

My build is also short and borderline stocky, which means it is easy for me to build muscle. So years of playing tennis through junior and high school earned me the nickname of "mango calves." Which resulted in my wearing only pants for the last 10 years in am attempt to cover myself.

What was worse to me than all of that? Freckles! How many Asian people have freckles? Aren't we all supposed to have porcelain doll complexions like my sister and my cousins? What happened to me? Summer was always the worst because my freckle smattering usually turned into a great connect-the-dots spread across my face.

And then ... I got mature older. Grew into some of my features. Realized that life was too short to obsess about what I didn't have. Got over it. There are bigger more important issues and things in my life. Plus, it's just way more fun to get ready for each day when I work on "accentuating the positive" versus try to figure out how to cover up all the bad (seriously - ever try to cover freckles up? Not enough foundation and powder in the world ...)

My cheeks? Are probably still pretty round considering the shape of my head. But I get told nowadays that I have fantastic cheekbones, and I'll probably look younger than my age for years to come - not going to complain about that ... so I'll keep on smiling (and haven't been pinched in years!)

I love my "muscly" legs now - I honestly think of them as one of my best features. Now that I've embraced wearing skirts and dresses, I haven't met one yet that I don't like!

Freckles - well, still working on my freckles. But they're unique and they make me who I am - and as much as I still love-hate my facial polka dots, I couldn't imagine myself without them!

OK, ladies, so I want to hear from you. Which of your features do you find to be pretty darn kickass? Was there anything about yourself that you used to be self-conscious about but now love love love?

  1. Your legs are frigging awesome. :) I'm working on trying to get a bit more muscle in mine, but I'm actually quite proud of them. For someone with very little muscle definition, I have decent calves, enough that shoe salespeople have asked me if I'm a runner when I try on heels (ha!).

    Love the stripes and green!

    1. Mid-thigh down, I love my legs. But I am still not going to be prancing around in a pair of hot pants or anything - my thighs and I aren't besties yet!

  3. Your legs are FAB....but I TOTALLY get the "mango" calves! I was a competitive cheerleader in high school...which means a lot of jumping and leaping. I used to call joke that I stored my softball teams balls in my calves because my muscles were lo pronounced there! I love this outfit and the green sweater!

    1. I know what you mean! Going up the stairs when I was in shorts or something was the worst, because sure enough, one of my "friends" would say something like "look at those giant calves!" Ah well, it just means I can still feign athleticism even though I'm too lazy to regularly work out nowadays!

  4. Lisa- I think you turned out a very well rounded individual (pun intended)- a lovely young woman with a fun quirky personality, a killer bod and the infectious smile. We all have our insecurities, but its is rewarding to turn them into victories instead of failures. And your freckles? May I have them, please.;)

  7. I love your striped top! It's awesome. I am also Asian and have freckles, much to my mother's dismay. I also have that muscley leg issue where it's hard to buy boots because so many won't fit over my gigantic calves, apparently.

    1. I am lucky in that my mom never seemed really bothered by my freckled, but I do remember separate instances where I went to makeup counters looking for lipstick or blush or something, and the sales lady asked if I also wanted something to help me with those "spots" on my face. I know they were just trying to upsell me, but it stung!

  8. My husband has freckles and I just LOVE them! I don't have any distinct features that I just hate but I'm one of those people that look at everyone else and wish I had their features..curly hair, bubbly personality etc.

    1. My BF is a redhead and he's got freckly arms and shoulders but they seem to blend in real well with his complexion and I think they look great. What I had always found awkward about my freckles is that my complexion is real pale but those freckles are deep tan!

  9. I have pinch-able cheeks too! I love this look especially the green sweater.

I guess I've grown into my curly, wild hair... can't say I always love it, but I definitely accept it.

can't get over the stripes + green + crisp white. LOVE IT. expect me to recreate this soon!

  13. What I think is funny is the features I like the most now, were the ones that I was teased about as a kid. I have a large mouth and big lips (think Julia Roberts who I've been compared to). I was ruthlessly teased about my lips, and now they're in vogue and I think it's rather funny that so many women are getting their lips injected to get fuller lips. Also I think the larger the mouth, the bigger the smile. So I'm happy with these features now. It's one of the reasons why I think getting plastic surgery at a young age is a very bad idea because those features you might hate when you're younger, you may love when you get older. Same goes for my boyfriend's red hair. He was endlessly teased about it, and now it's one of his best features and everyone always comments about how gorgeous his hair is.
Btw, I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE your freckles. It's time to fully embrace them!

    1. What I love about Julia Roberts IS her big lips and teeth - they give her a gorgeous big smile that just seems so warm and genuine. But it's always weird what kids choose to pick on, isn't it?

  14. i'm slowly starting to learn to love my curves - i have hips but i'm okay with it. it makes me a woman. and when my freckles come out on my shoulders over the summer? at least you can tell i have a bit of color. :P

  15. You know, it's funny...I'm part Asian and have the freckle issue, too. I'm still not sure which side it's from b/c my mother--who is South American--has freckles and tans easily, but I still have that Asian complexion underneath the freckles, if that makes any sense. ANYWAY, I was hugely insecure about my freckles (and it didn't help that some girls made fun of me for it and encouraged me to load up on the concealer. Bitches! J/K), and in all honesty, I still wear too much makeup for my own good, out of habit. But there are those days where I really like my unique-ness and will dare to step out with just moisturizer and mascara and not give a damn. At nearly 30 yrs old, I'm beginning to embrace the freckles. They're not going anywhere. They make me...me. I guess I'm starting to also appreciate the 'youthful' factor they add.
I think your freckles look really nice on you!

    1. Freckly high five!

I totally know what you mean about the Asian complexion under the freckles thing. My BF is a redhead and has freckles on his arms and shoulders but they are light and blend in with his complexion. I, on the other hand, have pale skin and dark freckles so they totally stand out.

But you're right - we need to learn to love them, they keep us young!

  17. You indeed have some bad ass stems young lady! And I always thought your freckles were really unique and cute! I have always been a fan of my cheekbones and dark skin.

I love this outfit sooooooo much Lisa!!! Prob one of my faves. I love the navy striped top (thanks for the close up because I thought it was black and white, which I still liked, but the navy is even better) and the white pencil skirt! And GAW!! that Kelley green blazer is the bee's knees.

  18. A) That top is amazing.

    B) I have similar feelings about my calves, although my bulk comes from running up the hills in my neighborhood (big, steep hills) and a lot of gymnastics as a kid. I've made my peace with them.

    1. Gymnastics! I bet you've got some pretty toned shoulders and arms then too - ooh, makes me jealous. I've got broad shoulders (compared to my mom and sis) but I have always been more "meaty" up top than "toned." I know, I know, I could totally fix that if I wasn't lazy ...

  20. Pops of neon fun!! Yay I really love this outfit and this is something I would definitely wear!

My many moles on my face and my strong legs are my kick ass features. I have had several people compare my legs to a horses. So that could be a little hurtful, but hey they are strong and kick ass! :)

  21. Omg Lisa! we have a lot in common lady! freckles and cheeks have always been a big thing for me. I have to say I have always liked my freckles and I'm sort of neutral when it comes to my cheeks but people seem to like them so I think that's a bonus. My friend's grandma used to say I have a little apple face (it was a compliment to her haha)
The one thing I have always felt weird about is my chest. I developed way earlier than any of my friends and got looks from guys that made me really uncomfortable. Now that I'm 25 and a 34DD, I can't say I'm completely ok or in love with them but I've learned to make the best of it. Plus, even the days I don't like having them I still couldn't see myself without them.

I do think my legs and my lips are my best features :)

  26. i think you look great! :) i used to hate my legs because they are short and i feel like they're stocky, but now i don't mind so much anymore. short shorts will solve that problem, haha! ;) as for the body parts that i think are "pretty darn kickass"... i'm gonna have to go with my shoulders and my back. i much prefer showing off my back as opposed to showing cleavage. :)

  30. I happen to think your freckles are lovely and I love chubby cheeks. I prayed for my daughter have these type of cheeks when I was pregnant with her and she got one, haha :-) I don't pinch her as so much pretending they were meatballs and trying to eat it . Of course I end up just kissing her cheeks. Love the neon pink adding to the outfit, so fun!
