These are just a few of the items on my personal OMG-I-need-them-so-bad-or-my-life-won't-be-complete shopping wishlist. You know that list - those long sought-after items that you either didn't think you needed at the time or waited so long for a deal that you missed it completely.

The stuff that you scour the blog sales and Ebay for - the items that had long since hit sale, and second cuts (and probably third cuts if it had lasted that long) but that you do mental calculations on how much close to retail or over! you'd be willing to pay if you miraculously could get your hands on it again. The dress or skirt or jacket where your one wearable size suddenly stretched out over two - three - four different sizes.

IMG_4321  IMG_4312

And then ... one day you may hit the virtual shopping jackpot where your Holy Grail flits by your over the Interwebs. And you squeal and make grabby hands at the monitor and clickety-click your way to a purchase.

And then ... delight of delights? Closet is D O N E? Or more likely for me - utter disappoint?

Case in point - The Anthropologie Field Game cardigan and Anthropologie Greybar coat. I searched for them forever. I ended up purchasing them in a mad swirl of fingers over the keyboard when I found them on Ebay. I got them. Sighed. Tried them on. Realized they were more special in my mind than they could ever turn out in real life. Then never wore either item and in fact ended up selling them both on my blog sale.

I got the grey Field Game cardi, and major props to you ladies who had all looked so super-fantastic in yours, because when I got mine, I could not make it work with anything for the life of me. It was way too busy busy busybusy for me.

Are there any fashionable items that you've missed out on that you are still regretting and on the hunt for? Have you recently found an item that you long-lusted for? If so, did it live up to your mind's expectations?

  1. I LOVE this outfit!!! And, like you, the Anthropologie Reed shirt dress was a must have for me.....in all colors......until I realized that it looked horrible on me. I called several stores and had them shipped to me, only to return them after I realized I could live without them. Great post, as always!

  2. Ooh, thanks for the outfit inspiration! I have this skirt (the cotton version) and have trouble figuring out what to wear with it. Great idea to do some gingham pattern-mixing!

I have just recently nearly completed my "gotta have" list. There are still a couple of other holy grail items I'd love to have, but I have finally found the ones I was "desperate" to get. The biggest on that list was the J.Crew domino jacquard pencil skirt. Yes, it is a size too big but like you said, it'll do and I can always get it altered.

    1. Ooh, yes, you looked great in that domino skirt! Now if I could get my hands on the matching domino jacket ...

  4. First off your print mixing here is perfection, and second yes.
    yes yes.
Sometimes I think we get so entrenched in the hunt and the adrenaline rush that comes when we finally do get it that we never stop and actually consider how the piece is going to look on us or work in our wardrobe.
I can think of many a time when i've practically had a panic attack in the final minutes of an ebay auction. Then ended up with something that's maybe just a smidge too small for me and it sits in my closet for years...

    1. Nowadays when I spy something I really want on Ebay, I'll plug in the top price I am willing to pay for it, then won't visit the auction again until it is over. I don't want to get caught up into last-minute auction frenzy!

  5. One reason I have stopped reading as many fashion blogs as I used to is that I would end up wanting something because it looked good on other people, not because I really needed it. I don't think my closet will ever be "complete" because that would mean I would stop shopping. I find that if I just don't look then I won't want. So I delete all sale emails before even looking at them. Sure I may miss out on some cute stuff, but there's always next season and always more stuff to be had.

That said, the few fashion blogs I do keep reading are ones like yours that demonstrate style without always having to buy the next big thing. Absolutely adore this outfit!

  6. I love all the pattern mixing in this outfit, Lisa! That monogram necklace is gorgeous...checking out the Etsy shop now :)

I can't say I'd ever gotten to the point where I hunted down an item on Ebay. Reading so many fashion blogs, I'm tempted every day to buy new things. But lately I've really curbed my spending and I'm doing more shopping in my own closet.

  7. Hmm... that Jcrew Ikat skirt you're sporting just might go onto my shopping wishlist...
I can totally relate to that feeling of OMGWTF!!?!?! when something just totally disappears from a store's website. I've developed a weird superstition about shopping - I don't buy something right away, and instead wait a few days or a week and if the thing still haunts my thoughts and dreams then I buy. But if its gone by then I tell myself "It just wasn't meant to be...." and if it goes on sale in that time period then I figure the gods have aligned in my favor and I absolutely MUST buy!! It saves me a lot of money actually...

    1. I like you shopping philosophy and follow that sometimes too. That's why I prefer to buy online a lot of times - sometimes in-store I just see it, try it and buy it, but online, I can see if I can get it somewhere elsee for a deal, look at similar items, sleep on it ...

  8. Sleeveless trench. I've contemplated it for many moons. I still have fits of scouring over F21 and Old Navy to just looksie . . . but I have restrained myself. Love this look Lisa! The gingham and polka dots and stripes go so well together!

    1. Ooh sleeveless trench. The whole trench body with different sleeves deal is big this spring - think of all the looks you can pull together with sleeveless trench, it's like buying a bunch more jackets! (Just call me enabler ...)

  9. I don't have as long a list of must-haves like I used to, although hubs would probably disagree. And funny enough, I think I'm almost relieved when an item doesn't live up to the image in my head:p... Love love this outfit, esp with the pop of red!:)

    1. I know what you mean about being relieved when an item doesn't live up to the image in your head - I have a few long sought-after items that I absolutely love. And what do I do but ogle the piece but rarely ever wear it!

  11. Great outfit! I love a black-and-white pattern mix, and red is the perfect accent.

I'm on the lookout for a chambray shirt at the moment, but I don't want to spend too much money and have it turn out to be a regret if I only wear it a few times.

    1. Old Navy's got a ton of different chambray shirts, as does Zara - they may be two less expensive options. And I bet Target's gotta have something too!

  12. Love your outfit - especially the pop of red!

I absolutely NEEDED the bright blue Caballo Falls dress from Anthropologie. I was obsessed with it, I dreamt about it and then finally, I found it and bought it. Two years later, I still haven't worn it. *sigh*

  13. there are a few things that i lust for - a polka dot blouse from jcrew (darnit), a pair of prada pumps, and of course, the if i ever win the lottery oh so elusive birkin.

i think i might need one or two pieces left for my wardrobe and i'm good for a while.

  14. It can totally relate. The worst offenders were items I never saw irl, only on blogs. Inevitably it will turn out not to be my style and will sit in my closet unworn, until I will come to my senses and sell it. Another classic case is items that I actually tried and didn't like, then they would sell out, I see them on others and I start lusting after them and the hunt would begin. I would finally score it, receive and confirm that, surprise, I don't like it on me! Then Eureka! I have this new styling idea! So I try it, take pictures, love it, never wear it...
I am getting better at this though, or so I am telling myself, lol.
Like always, great post and cute outfit!

    1. I've sold a lot of stuff on my blog sale that I bought because other bloggers looked fan-freaking-tastic in their pieces. I am learning not to do that anymore ... though technically with the stripe tillary tote on backorder, that doesn't count, right?

  15. I am so in love with this outfit! Perfect pattern mixing!

I actually just recently scored a navy gingham shirt from J.Crew that I've been wanting foreverrrrrr! I feel so happy & complete now that it's in my closet.

  17. Sexy mama in that pencil skirt!! Love the pattern mixing you have going on in this outfit.
The list is small for me with things that I truly lust over. Most of the time I'll want it and if I don't buy it right away, I usually forget about it. I was dying for a pair of Current Elliott polka dot jeans for the longest and when I finally ordered what I thought were a yellow pair, they just weren't the same in real life. Totally cute, but not what I was hoping for in terms of color. I still think about them but have resigned myself to not needing new jeans.

Oh, girl, please, on the quest for the Perfect Article of Clothing. Except I get frustrated and give up before I get there :P Then it's on to the next Perfect Article of Clothing. So I maintain a constant state of longing but don't spend much money...lol.

  24. This outfit....I die! I'm loving the preppy with twist looks you've been putting together. Can I tell you I've been coveting that necklace on the bauble bar's site. I'm am thrilled that you found a much less expensive one for me to buy!

I've been hunting for the Charlotte Taylor ant dress. Why didn't I get this when it went on sale and of course the dresses that are available are not my size and only slightly cheaper than the original price...boo!

  25. Super cute look! Loving the mix of prints! I'm totally with you girl! That happened with my New Years dress! I scoured millions of dresses, picked one I thought was fabulous, only to have it sell out while I was purchasing it, found it days later on a random site, only to have it seriously not live up to expectations. NO fun! lol

  28. The Penelope Patents are on my "if only" list for sure. And I laughed out loud at the food that looks chewed up comment. I'm so with you on that one. Applesauce gives me the heebies...This outfit however is all sorts of RIGHT on you. One thing on my bug list, for me personally, is the stacked bracelet trend. Makes my list of things that I just can't get with. Why? For one, sweaty wrists, especially in Texas. Can't do it. Also I like the element of surprise, and I sound like a chain gang comin' when I wear a gaggle of bracelets!
