A Round of Friday Mocktails

I'd like to think of us as a stylish group of modern ladies who are smart, witty and refreshingly self-deprecating. We are all a bunch of busy busy bees who often have a lot of balls to juggle and potentially few places to turn to when we feel like we're getting overloaded.

So I thought it'd be fun to start up an unofficial (bi)monthly - Friday Mocktails! - session where we can indulge each other over a little whine. I think for a lot of us in our daily lives, we're pushed to "keep it together" in our jobs, families, friends, etc. that it makes it hard to let ourselves vent when we need to. I feel like it is easier to mention the not-so-awesome happenings in our lives here in Blogtown because we're not directly involved - we're unbiased, not here to judge, just here to share a giggle over misfortune or offer an understanding nod of agreement.

And yes, I am openly inviting you all to come and moan over the sucky things that have happened, so if you prefer to keep it rainbows and sunshine, then stop reading and instead tell me how pretty my dress looks, bwahaha ...

Here's what I've been bemoaning recently -

I took my car into an auto body repair shop to get a quote to repair my bumper damage and it's going to run $400! To fix something I didn't do! And have I heard anything back from the punk that did this yet? Argh ...

How come I am missing a decorating gene? I went with the BF over the weekend to check out some furnishings and I could not have been more honey badger about the whole deal (or should I call it ordeal instead for the poor BF). I can spend hours looking for the perfect pair of brown wedges, but when it is time to look for wall decor or end tables, my eyes seem to roll into the back of my head and my Care Meter plummets to zero.

Work. Just ... work.

I started using retinol cream on my face again, albeit very sparingly and only about once a week. Stills burns, still gets me red-faced in a bad way. When will I learn?

Bethenny Frankel, you're beautiful, successful and hilarious. However if I owned that apartment under yours, I would want to kill you for thinking it is OK to be rollerskating and cartwheeling your way all around your home. Plus I get that you've got a film crew following you around, but why do you have to Bogart the entire sidewalk with you and your posse when walking in NYC? Nobody walks four-across. It's called common courtesy, lady.

Mom, I love you and appreciate you so much. But why do you like to call me during the workday to read articles to me from the paper that you think would be informative? Don't give money to strangers over the phone, don't go out with people I don't know, make sure I know where my belongings are when I am at the airport - OK, got it.

So what about you ladies for this Friday Mocktail session? Got anything you want to vent about, big or small? Any griping /grumbling / moaning /wailing you want to share with your fellow commiserators over a virtual round of cocktails?

  1. bahahahaha! this is great:
    1. my mother KNOWS i'm not allowed to receive texts at work, and yet she continues to send me cryptic texts that she knows i'll answer. like 'i just called emergency services...'
    2. work.
    3. getting a quote for our basement remodel and realizing that $35,0000 might be a bit out of reach
    4. having birthday dinner with my parents tonight... we're having chinese food b/c that's what my mom wants. but it's my birthday... :(

  3. OMG, LOVE this dress! And love this feature even more. My last week was pretty eventful. As a fairly shy person I get nervous when I have to give a presentation. And I don't have alot of experience in doing so. So on Monday when I gave a short 10 min presentation to about 100 or so people at a workshop I couldn't sort out the microphone and would periodically speak really loudly into it. This of course made me more nervous. LOL. Cheers to forgetting about that moment :)

    1. microphones are terrible that way! We should all do more karaoke until it becomes second-nature...

    2. Public speaking is a big fear of mine. Doesn't help that I have foot-in-mouth syndrome in a bad way. Doing debate through school and then toastmasters didn't even help much - you are a brave girl!

  4. Haha love the new feature, Lisa! I just need to vent about my stupid allergies...I've been feeling sick for almost a month now and I'm getting tired of it! It's going to rain tomorrow so I'm hoping and praying that gets rid of some of the pollen. Have a great weekend, Lisa!

  5. This made me giggle. Then I got to the MOM section and I was instantly reminded that it drives me absolutely up the wall that when my mother calls, she still addresses me as "peanut" in spite of me blatantly telling her that I cringe.every.time. But does that stop her? No... And I begrudgingly just roll with it. ;)

  6. Lisa-Cute dress and fun topic. Errands are my peeve of the week. They're endless. Cleaners, accountant, smog check, bank, groceries...I could go on and on. I hate doing them so I procrastinate which makes things worse.
Fortunately my mom is one of the few I know who respects and accepts that I'm an adult. At family dinners and holidays she does try to suck the attention into her vortex but I've learned to redirect it and distribute back where it belongs. Age, experience and wine help with the redirection success :-)

  7. My mother does the same thing--tells me the local news and then reminds me of the dangers of facebook and the internet. :P

This week I really wanted to get a haircut. This morning seemed perfect since DH said he just had a meeting at 1. Then all of a sudden he's getting ready to go at 8:30. Thanks. All I need is an hour, hour and a half to leave him with the baby so I can have somebody else wash and style my hair and then walk out of the salon with a fresh new style for spring and to feel pretty ALREADY!!

    And I love your dress!

  8. argh- yes!! Actually I started a related post earlier this week but then accidentally deleted my photos from the memory card (argh) so it`s going up later tonight...

    how about, for starters:
-why are software developers obsessed with tinkering with constant add-ons, while never A-fixing the issues with the previous 12 editions and B-never asking or testing it in the field before it is forced upon us (whereupon the linking errors between pre-existing bugs become redonkulous) and C-refusing to admit that these issues have an enormous impact on a business' productivity and profitability and peace-of-mind!
-why did I just spend 2 1/2 hours of my day tracking down and correcting a series of small cash errors that should have been caught days ago by a co-worker before they became a huge headache!!

Great dress- I love the contrast of the soft floral with kick-ass belt! These are the things that make my day palatable. Thank goodness I`m wearing double layers of polka dots or I would be strangling someone right now...

    1. Um, YES re: software developers. So irritating.

      Delete
    2. oh, yes, software developers, why don't they admit that they're just gamers with day jobs? which is why, having reached Level XII, they don't want to go back to fix Level V.

  9. Oh I need this! haha I think it's a great idea and I certainly have some ranting pent up.
First, this guy at work...left dishes in the sink for me to clean. He stayed late last night and I came in this morning to dirty dishes even though I make sure the sink is empty every night. I'm not your dish maid!
I think I have to break up with a friend. and it's going to be hard. But shes doing something I already told her made me feel uncomfortable and disrespected. I already told her how I feel and she's brushing my feelings off and this has happened before in our long friendship...I still have some thinking to do on this one but I'm not feeling good about our friendship any more. Damn, that hurts.
I am so ready for this weekend, but damn I wish it was sunny! It's been raining all week and the forecast calls for nothing but more rain for the next 7 days. It's really hard to feel cute when it's rainy but not cold enough for actual winter duds. At least it is for me. maybe it's just because it's been so long since Ive been able to go outside without every part of my body being covered.

Phew! I do feel a little better getting that all out. And seriously, that dress is really pretty! :)

    1. Seems like the rain loves to come on the days where we actually have time to enjoy the day!

  12. i got scolded by some guy in the elevator this morning... he said i shouldn't be wearing headphones and clogging up one of my senses like that because i won't be able to hear someone coming up behind me. my response: i heard you coming up behind me and held the elevator for you. (bam!)

p.s. i totally love your outfits... probably one one of my favorite-dressed bloggers :)

  13. Oh, this is awesome! Originally, I was going to say nothing to vent about really, but then I remember yesterday about this lady at work who always leaves tissues/towelette/band-aid wrapper on the floor in our washroom which got me imagining how her own bathroom must look like which led me to thinking about our bathroom at home and wondering why am I the one delegated to cleaning it when I hate, hate, hate cleaning the bathroom. Hah! This is way too fun! Thanks!... and loving the floral print!:)

  16. My Mom and my Aunts who are in their 70's are all up in Facebook, so much so that they all bought iPads so that they'll always be connected. I think that's great to a point. Not so great when they start posting pictures of me and my cousins in our diapers.

My cousin and his wife are expecting their first child. Now Mom is back on asking when will she have grand kids? I especially like it when she adds you got married a year before they did. News flash Mom it's not a race.

  24. My date kept complaining about his ex-girlfriends. He said that they were very pretty but they were demanding (cos they have standards. pffft!), domineering (cos they are assertive enough to have opinions. What a male chauvinist pig (MCP)!) and enjoyed shopping a lot. (not even with his money! They were all wealthy ladies. So how dare he judge them?!) So he wanted to date a simple woman instead of a pretty one this time and that if he had met me in the past, he won't even have asked me out. (cos I am not pretty unlike his ex-girlfriends, he conceded when I asked again to confirm that I was not hearing it wrongly.) Long story, Lisa. There are more interesting details about it but I should write a story about it. Maybe I could email you the story then you could post it up on your blog? ;)

  31. Love this post, Lisa, my mom called me at work regularly after she retired, when she finally had time to discover all the little chores and errands that only I could do. After all, if you want something done, ask a busy person. Last straw: find a jeweler to remove monogram from antique silver-and-horn bar set so she could throw a party at which she would use it, Pop having decreed 20 years ago that the monogram looked too girl-ish for him.
