The Back of My Closet

You know that whole deal about cost-per-wear? About how you shouldn't buy things that you couldn't immediately think of three different ways of wearing? That if something doesn't seem like it could instantly fit into your existing wardrobe, that you're spending your bucks in the wrong place?

Well I don't subscribe to any of that when it comes to me and my fashionable acquisitions.

The deep dark recesses of my closet and dresser hides many things. Most of them will get rotated through my outfits every few weeks. Some fave items I snag at weekly. Some items I adore so much that I am afraid to wear them a lot. And then there are the pieces that rarely every get out.

IMG_3727

You know the ones. They were items that were going to "complete" your wardrobe when you fawned over them in-store or online and you swore it would go with absolutely everything and be The red skirt / blue pumps / animal print blouse that was going to end all red skirts / blue pumps / animal print blouses.

And you hem and haw over how "practical" the item(s) was going to be or wonder if you need another item in the same material and color as the six you already have, maybe sit on your hands until something hits sale. Maybe not. Maybe you needed it immediately.

IMG_3730  IMG_3721

Then you bring it home, try it in, ooh and ahh appreciatively at it, then put it neatly into your closet. And six weeks / four months / two seasons later, there it still sits, perhaps with the tags still on them.

Welcome to the drab dark world of my J.Crew thandie blazer, my Sam Edelman adena loafers, my Anthropologie castle lake dress. I could go on and on but I'm afraid I'd just embarass myself.

What fashionable items do you have that were going to be focal points in your wardrobe that have rarely (or never) seen the light of day? What have you bought and barely ever used?

  2. Oh, I looooove those shoes! The whole outfit is awesome, Lisa! I only have a few, and right now they're sitting in a pile waiting to have photos taken so they can be given new homes via ebay. They're all from Anthropologie and I bought them because they looked awesome on other bloggers (or models)... not so much me. Rosewood tank in size 2 anyone?

Not that I should be looking for anything new in my closet but you know, sometimes it's hard to avoid it :D

  4. The emerald green with the navy chevron is so pretty! I have a bad habit of buying things and then realizing I shouldn't have bought them after it's already too late to return them! I'm trying to be more conscious lately of what I'm buying and making sure I will actually wear it with a bunch of things. Have a great weekend, Lisa!

  5. Lisa, that outfit is fabulous. I love those shoes, chevron skirt and top girl! You are rockin' it. For me sometimes it's a funny color top that i love, but just haven't found the right item to pair it up with. And so it sits...and sits. HaHa Eventually something comes along or God forsake I get frustrated and just give it away.

  6. For me is mostly 'look-at-me' dresses and heels that are over 4 inches. As much as I like them on others, they are not my natural style and make me feel self conscious. Anything strapless or requiring special bra. I also LOVE blazers but there never seem to be enough days with the right weather for wearing them.

  7. I can't believe that chevron skirt is from Old Navy. I really thought it was J. Crew or Something else really expensive.
Anthropologie's Button Belted Dress is sitting in the recesses of my closet. I thought since it was a dress AND a skirt I would wear it all the time. I've worn it ONCE since I got it on Black Friday.

  8. I have had this same problem in a very shameful way. Most of what I buy is just because it is fun and quirky. But sometimes a trendy item will hit the radar and I NEED it in the worst way. And I finally find it and get so happy. Then I buy it. Sometimes not even on sale (:-O) just to have it. And then, I will wear it. Once. And shove it back. Sigh. And then months will go by and I will remember about it and get excited about it again . . . only to realize that I have to wait until the weather is colder/hotter to don it again. Like my new found cape collection born from a cape obsession. I've worn each one approximately one time each. And I've had them for months now. Yikes.

On another note, I love this skirt on you sooooooooooo much. And the color of your top is a great compliment to it--especially knotted!

    1. I have close to a handful of capes myself. I think capes are a staple because it's a great alternative to a jacket. You should throw them on once in a while. It's quirky and fun.

  9. This skirt is awesome! I've been doing a closet clean out lately, well sorta. There are still few items I don't wear but don't want to get rid of either! Some I have listed on ebay, others I will take to a consinment store, and whatever is left I will donate. But truth to be told I'm only selling few things to compromise since I've been a bad girl and spent quite a bit this year so far :D

  11. Adorable outfit. You really know what works on you.

I'll be doing another closet clean out this weekend. The highest cost per wear items are cocktail dresses, dress pants - I never wear them and high heels. I've sold a lot through consignment over the last 6 months and expect to take a few more bags on Sunday. I rarely get rid of cocktail dresses and will keep only 1 or 2 pair of the trousers-you just never know when you'll need them. The high heels are going. I just can't wear them anymore. *sadness*

  12. I love everything about this outfit.

Also, I am a big fan of the cost-per-wear for things I know I will wear a lot. Jeans. Red heels. A nice, knee-length black dress. I see no point in buying cheap-o versions of those because I know I will wear them over and over and have to replace them over and over if I don't get a higher quality product. That being said, I have several high-quality, well-loved, hardly-worn pieces in my closet for which I harbor absolutely no guilt or buyer's remorse. :)

  13. Cute outfit! I tried that ON skirt on last weekend... it was VERY hard to put it back. It is one of ON's rare wins!

I am too embarrassed to discuss in detail all of the never worn items I own. Let's just say, I TOTALLY know what you mean.

  14. I get it. I am in the process of reviewing and editing my closet for this very reason. A lot of, "what was I thinking!?"

  15. YIKES!!! Lisa, that is exactly, EXACTLY what I do with 99.9 percent of the things I buy!!! {and the .01% that I do use often are all workout gear}

and now I need that old navy skirt....

Your outfit is PERFECT! You are beautiful :)

I totally have items on my closet I haven't shown any love to and those are outfits I doI love but haven't found an occasion to wear them to or the weather isn't quite right. I'm a big fan of Diane Von Furstenberg and I have about 5 of her wrap dresses and I've worn one. Also I have plenty of Anthropologie skirts I haven't touched in a long while, they are probably collector's items now, and I've sold plenty at second hand store but the ones I've kept I haven't worn for years but I keep it because it's adorable and I know it's hard to find items by now. I am also a size 2. Anyone insterested in lending each other clothes? Not swapping coz I still want to keep them. It'll be like borrowed Feathers from In Pursuit of Pretty Things. Lisa, do you have an item you want to try out but don't want to buy? An item that's not really your style but would be fun to try? We can just borrow things from each other and triple our closet.

    1. This is a really interesting idea, nofusschic! Tripling my closet, so dangerous ...

    2. Here's another idea. You can tell us one item you haven't reached for like a blazer or dress and we all can pick one from our closet and wear it within that week. That way we all can see how everyone who participated style their item and we''ll be using what we already have. Then you can name someone to announce the next item and so on.

  18. I am dying over your skirt and shoes!
I used to have more items like that and then I moved to the States and had to pack up my life in 2 suitcases--2 big suitcases, mind you, but still--needless to say I brought the essential/basic/most useful pieces. Now I tend to view purchases in a more practical way, though still trying to keep the fun. I have to admit every once in a loooong while I'll get something that I just know won't get that much use out of but it's just too darn pretty.

  20. The color of your shoes makes me happy. :) Great look.
I spent all of last month wearing some of the great things in my closet that I don't wear regularly ... but I didn't get around to wearing my 2 maxi dresses. I wore one of them to a party, but the other one still has the tags on it! Luckily they were not expensive but I really need to work them into my outfit rotation. I also have a few thrift finds that I love but really can't figure out how to wear.

  31. i really love your wedges. actually i think that it is a pretty good rule and one i have not heard of - that a new item of clothing should be able to be made into at least 3 outfits, but it is true, if you are trying to buy an item you just really love, and maybe is a bit out of your daily comfort zone, you should go ahead and buy it anyway - chances are if you love it, you will end up buying other things to match with it, and then your personal style can grow and mature :)

  33. I am into the shirt tied at the waist these days. I find it to be very flattering. Your outfit is adorable. I have that skirt in the orange/coral color & will have to remember to fold over when I try it again.

The simplest rule for me is that if I don't wear it immediately, there is a large chance that it won't get worn. I'm trying to return things within the store's return period if I don't wear them in that time frame. I have to admit that if I haven't worn it by then I often end up not wearing it.

    1. I need to do that - start some sort of "trial" period for my new purchases with the tags and paperwork and everything so that if I don't go reaching for it within a few weeks, it should go back. Usually things either go back immediately or get put into the blackhole of my closet.

  35. So I have that skirt in orange/cream that I bought last year for a great price (I think I've had more religious experiences in the sale section of Old Navy than I've ever had in any house of worship) and I have NEVER worn it. I think it literally still has the tags on it. At the time, there were no other colors, or else I would have picked this white and navy number because I have a small obsession with anything remotely nautical. I have NO IDEA what top to wear with it. Because the stripe is cream instead of white, I feel very limited in my options. Any recommendations?

Also, this outfit it fab. I would steal, but my people DO NOT look good in green. And by my people, I mean Italians. Yes, I am now representing all of them. I decided.

    1. Denim shirts are in right now, so maybe a little blue would work with your orange/cream skirt? I know what you mean about matching the shades though, it kills me when I bring home something that I thought was white but turns out to be ivory or cream, then I can't pair it with my white tops like I wanted.
