My Blogging Best

I love perusing a variety of style blogs for my continuing daily sartorial education – inspiration for a different way to wear a piece I currently own, insight on how some new items may fit a real person, ideas for unique outfit combinations, general camaraderie. But sometimes I may see a particularly out there ensemble and I wonder about the practicality of wearing that out in the world – who can wear a sheer dress to the office? does that person really trek the hills of San Fran in those 6” wooden platforms? how does that gal wear a mohair sweater and two armloads of blinged out bangles and not snag herself through the day?

I know there are loads of different style bloggers out there – ones who purely put together outrageous concoctions for their readers then go back to their daily lives and normal garb, and ones who show what they are really wearing for the day – good, bad or other. I obviously veer towards the latter group, because honestly I don’t have the brain power to put together trend-making ensembles nor the time in the mornings to change into completely different outfits.

However … I have "fudged" on certain things related to how you see me on my blog and what actually works for me in my real life. Here are some truths about my style blogging -

♠ Absolutely I will do stuff like wear my jacket on my shoulders because I’m pretty much always cold at work. However I only do this when I am sitting at my desk. If I’m outside, I am wearing my jacket (like arms through the arm holes wearing), and if I’m moving around indoors doing stuff, that jacket is over my chair and so I can avoid the whole strolling around like some visiting dignitary look.

♠ I do go bare-legged in the winter. Because winter in the SE is laughable most of the times, and because though I get cold often, my legs don’t seem to feel it. Though my toes do get cold, they are usually so smashed up in my shoes it makes no difference - ah, fashion.

♠ The bags I carry in my outfit shoots are the ones I carry for the day. I am ridiculously organized when it comes to the contents of my bags and I usually just have my wallet, keys, phone and cosmetic bag. If my bag is small, I totally am anal retentive and will switch to a smaller wallet. No purse in pic? Means I either haven't bothered to change it from last time and don't think it is a blogging match with my outfit, or I've also been known to shove my wallet and stuff right into my laptop bag for ease.

♠ I do wear the shoes in my pics to work. But I also am well aware of the days when I will be out and about and the ones where I’ll mostly be behind my desk. I have a pair of flats under my desk for unscheduled activities that I will d i e doing if I had to keep my sometimes awkwardly high heels on.

IMG_2206  IMG_2208

♠  You get to see my purses – you don’t get to see the giant laptop bag I also lug around.

♠  I usually throw my trench coat over whatever I’m wearing for extra warmth.

♠  My pics are normally taken at the beginning of each day – way before I am at my flat-headed and wrinkled "best" at 5pm.

♠  Sometimes I’ll take off some bracelets and/or rings through the day if I have to do a lot of computer work – I can’t stand to have my jewelry banging and clanking around all the time!

♠  My office is business casual-casual so I can get away with wearing jeans, shorts, minis. But I typically only wear Bermuda-length shorts to work and will only do minis with dark tights and on days I know I don’t have any customer or executive interaction.

So here's a nutshell and there I am. Are there any style blog photo liberties that you take between what you show on the blog versus what you really wear out into the world? Are there some items that you can't believe bloggers would actually wear out to more than do photo shoots in?

  1. Hey Lis, I'm definitely in the latter group too. I enjoy the seeing the trend setting, outrageous outfit wearing bloggers wear, but the truth is I don't get inspired and excited by looking at their blogs, like I do when I look at blogs like yours. For me the joy of style blogs is seeing girls, with real jobs, and real lives, and real bodies, and real bank accounts wearing real clothes. Here's to keepin' it real! ;)

    1. Ah, the good and bad of having a "real" bank account, haha!

  2. I love your outfit! I want a Tippi sweater even more, now. As for me, I cheat occasionally, but most of my outfit shots are exactly what I wear to work that day. However, sometimes I'll switch out a jacket for a warmer cardigan once I get to the office and if I'm wearing a belt it is usually removed sometime right after I eat lunch. Heh.

    1. Oh I know what you mean about those belts especially right after lunch! I consider it punishment for me gorging on something terrible for lunch when I sit there all bloated and uncomfortable around 1pm ...

  3. Hi Lisa! I usually gravitate more to blogs like yours. They're more conducive to my style and taste. Different readers like different things, that's why I'm so glad there is a variety of blogs to look at an enjoy. If everyone was the same, this would be a boring world. haha Have a great day.

  4. Lisa, I really enjoy your blog because I don't ever think you're "playing dress up" like some other blogs. (example: a blogger supposedly wearing 6 inch heels to class, really?).

I take a lot of my pics on the weekend since I have more time then so I guess that's how I "cheat". I could never actually go bare legged in the winter here but sometimes an outfit just won't look right with tights.

  5. I am like you, I only photograph what I am wearing for the day. The only times I have "changed" for blog photos is when I am showing a way to style a vintage item. I have to admit, I wondered how you could do bare legs in winter...and mad props to you for pulling it off! I only wish since bare legs are infinitely more appealing to me!

    1. A SE winter is definitely not comparable to a NE winter - plus honestly, during the work week, my outdoor time is relegated to walking to and from my car!

  6. I only photograph what I have actually worn for the day, since I too don't have time to change back and forth. The truth is, I tend to try a lot of things on before I actually decide on what to wear out the door. I guess I should start photographing that. I think trendy blogs are interesting, but not as interesting as the true to life ones.
One think I would like to start incorporating more in the spring/summer is wedges or heels with shorts. I have seen a lot of cuteness on blogs in that regard.

    2. That dress is amazing on you.

    3. Taking pictures in the morning before work is a must. Always. :)

  9. i completely agree with natasha on the first post. whats in my pics are what i'm wearing for the day. if you don't see my shoes pictured its because either my feet hurt or i'm wearing the flats that i walk to work in. ;)

  10. I hear ya Lisa. For me, what I wear on my blog is what I am wearing. Some times it is a bit ridiculous, but I do trek my kids around in my heels and I do sometimes dress inappropriate for the occasion (hello heeled sandals on a farm). I actually have a million bags, but I always forget to bring them with me. They would, however, most likely be for show. I am horrible about changing out my bags. And I do the same thing for the same reason with rings and bracelets during the day. I love this dress and jacket on you!

  13. Great blog topic :) I definitely agree that there are some style bloggers that wear crazy outrageous clothes that would not work in real life and then there are style bloggers that will definitely inspire you to wear normal clothes but in a stylish way :) Do you take your photos yourself?

    3. No, but my next camera (I'm saving up) will have that option. My current camera has a self-timer that can do 3 photos one after the other, so I don't have to go running back and forth all the time!

  14. Hahaha those thoughts cross my mind too but I just chalk it up to me being clumsy and/or inept, lol. You know, while we're having these thoughts about some bloggers' outfits, I bet my coworkers think the same about MY outfits (because sometimes I look ridiculously overdressed).

    1. Well my "outside" time during the work week is usually relegated to walking to and from my parked car, so I'm not out a whole lot anyways. ;o) Plus I just can't seem to get into tights this year - you can probably thank the shedding pup for that, haha!

  18. I usually wear my outfits as they appear in my ootd. Sometimes, very rarely, I will swap out the flats because of last minute decisions before leaving the house. But that only happens when it's no longer boot-weather. I do agree with you about liking the 'everyday' woman's wardrobe's blogs. They're so much more attainable and relate-able, imo.

  19. Oh I love this teal color on you :) I wear what I wear on my blog to work...but sometimes I have to get rid of the heels midway through the day :)

  20. I love this post! I, too, take pics of real everyday wear. While I enjoy more fashionista stylings, I simply can't relate to wearing those things IRL. At least MY real life!! Haha!!

  21. Gorgeous bracelet! And you look great in turquoise. I usually end up taking off/paring down the arm party because although I like the look, the jangling/clanking is too much after a while.

    1. I know what you mean about the bracelets. The elastic ones as OK, the big bangles drive me crazy - that's why I don't wear a bunch of them together. And of course, I kept stabbing myself with my cuff today!

  22. Are you wearing the skirt that I had on yesterday?? Great minds, think alike and I'm a little jealous that your weather allows you to be bare-legged. Oh, what I wouldn't give to not wear tights right now.

I don't take too many liberties with what I really wear versus what you see on the blog. I did change shoes once because I was wearing flats with something that looked better with heels. For the most part, I try to take pics in the morning because I would look like a wrinkled mess if I took them at any other time of the day and that's just wouldn't be pretty.

    1. Ooh, you subconsciously inspired me! ;o) For some reason I just can't get into the tights thing this winter. I'd rather be cold and bear it for some reason this year, as long as I don't go blinding people with my chicken skin white legs!

  23. I am very much like you - I post what I actually wear (though not necessarily on the same day I wore it) and occasionally add or remove accessories and heels as need be throughout the day. (bangles banging on a laptop = most annoying thing ever)

As for those west coast bloggers, I need to know, how does one wear several layers, sweaters and a coat, and still have bare legs? What is the weather? what could it possibly be??

  25. Funny thing: when I saw this outfit I wondered to myself if you REALLY go bare-legged in the winter. Wish I could do that. Unfortunately I get way to cold.

I don't do a lot of OOTD posts, but when I do it's more for myself, to get an idea of what works and what doesn't. Still have LOADS of those falling into the latter category, but I feel that posting and then writing about them helps me to understand my preferences, get a good feel for color, and overall refine my style. For that reason, cheating simply isn't useful for me.

    Great post - thanks!

    1. Oh yeah, even when I don't post them, taking pics of my outfits has definitely helped me with my style - seeing yourself in a picture is definitely different than when you see yourself in the mirror.

As for my bare legs in the winter - well my outside time during the work week is relegated to walking to and from my car. I definitely wouldn't be able to stand it like this if I had to walk a lot or take the bus/train/etc.!

  26. My internship this past summer was at a business casual-casual office--sometimes I felt overdressed, but thankfully there was one other woman (an older lady) who always looked stylish. I always tried to wear heels to work, but since my immediate female co-workers all wore flats or casual sandals, they couldn't be TOO dressy... a hard line to walk.

  27. Lisa!! LOVE this topic!! Some of my outfits are what I wear, and some are what I wish I could wear! Most of the "trend" outfits are NOT for my workplace. Since I work in a hospital, most of my work clothes are very conservative (including which shoes I wear). I had a "working gal" series of posts awhile back when I was out of town. Also, I only have certain work bags. So I have casual, fun not at work clothing and conservative work clothing! And I do wear bare legs in winter (hello Texas) and wear jackets with my arms through holes outside!!! Again, LOVE this topic!
