Clean House

BF is away on business this week so "woe is me" aside, I am kind of looking forward to some good ole me me me time. I'm typically the neat one in the relationship, so when BF is home, I sometimes feel like a live-in maid because I spend quite a bit of time figuratively trailing behind him cleaning up.

I call the BF "Crumbs" sometimes because he leaves a path through the house of everywhere he's been or touched - wadded up tissues on the counters, half-drunk water glasses everywhere, remnants of mail all over the living room, worn clothes on the floor, shoes all over, sunglasses in the pantry, car keys next to the sink, vitamin bottles scattered throughout the kitchen, dirty dishes on the coffee table, crumbs on the couch, blindly stuffing more trash in bin when it is clearly full.

Now I'm no Miss Perfect Everything, but I am a bit of a Type A with some OCD thrown in - so when BF doesn't do something the way it should be done in my head, I can't help but to fix it.

But when BF is gone and there's no one for me to set an example for ... well, I may lax a bit. Like forget to make the bed or fold the clothes or pick up the dirty towels kind of lax. Like sit on the couch all evening watching Real Housewives reruns while the dishes pile up. Eating chips and painting my nails. In my jammies. At 7:05 at night. Like a total crumbly hypocrite.

And then the day that BF is scheduled to come back ... mad dash to clean, tidy, wash, hide all traces of my secret slovenly ways. Be found gracefully reading on the armchair with my coastered cup of tea sitting on the immaculate coffee table, pillows perfectly fluffed, dog brushed, floors gleaming.

OK, fairly certain BF knows that I am a clost slob, but he's too nice to say anything. But I appreciate that he plays along. Probably because of fear, haha!

When you're home alone for a few days, what do you like to do (or not do) that you can't when other inhabitants are around?

  1. Your necklaces are gorgeous! And I love discovering new Etsy shops so I'm going to check those out.

Haha I do similar things when the hubby isn't home. Usually do my nails and rent a girly movie that I know he would never watch with me. And eat total crap for dinner (although he'd enjoy that one too). :)

  2. Love your beautiful necklace with turtleneck.

Hubby is going away on a ski trip next week and I'm a little excited(guilty to say that.....) No cleaning up after him, I can slack a little and will usually do a thorough clean-up before he returns.

  3. Haha, I'm definitely a little like you, I get very OCD over other peoples messes...
    Loving your color combo here!

    1. Yeah - now it's OK if I want to be a total mess, but everyone else ... ;o) 'Course I had my dad's voice running through my head telling me it'll take me two seconds to pick up that cup - alright, alright!

  4. LOL, I am (or should I say *was*) a neat freak, too, with major OCD, but since I've had twins, I've had to lighten up a little b/c there is just NO containing their messes sometimes. LOL. With two 5 year olds, it's like a tornado went through my house!

LOVE that skirt, BTW. It's fantastic!

    1. Just think of it not as kids making messes, they are making memories ...

  5. I love how you call your BF "Crumbs"! haha! I call my kids "The Masters of Disaster". Most days I'm like you, feeling like I'm that little sweepy man at the end of the Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoon theme song, just cleaning as the mess trails behind those two little ones. ;) And my husband does the same thing with cups and mugs and clothes. To his credit though, he's wonderful about helping me with dishes and laundry. Hope you enjoy the cleanliness of your living space before "Crumbs" returns!

    1. I definitely can't have BF help with laundry - I know he tries (kind of), but his idea of laundry literally is to throw everything into the washer all at the same time, put it on hot/high and call it a day. When he lived on his own, his clean clothes lived on top of his washer/dryer and his dirties resided on the bathroom floor. Egads ...

  6. If my sig. other is not around, I usually take the opportunity to order Asian take-out, plant myself on the couch, and do a marathon of watching whatever show happens to be on Netlix, OR something on the Bravo channel, which he would NEVER watch with me, lol.
I also have to pick up after him, but sometimes, I can be a slob every so often too:(

I actually really like your lip color above...is that lipstick or something else?

  7. When my hubby is gone, I pull everything out of the closet, pile it on the bed and sort/rearrange/make outfits on hangers, etc. Um, I have a technically "walk-in" closet so um... it is a big big pile on the bed! He was gone for 2 weeks and I got a LOT done!!

    1. I've never tried doing that but I probably should - I don't have a messy closet, but things get lost or "forgotten" in there all the time!

  8. I totally feel like a live-in maid. I practically follow the BF around the apartment cleaning up the destruction he leaves in his path. But even when he cleans up I'm not happy because he doesn't do it right...haha. When he's away I obsessively clean, but I may forget to shower or get out of my jammies.

    1. This busted me up because it sounds like me! Of course BF can't clean right - it is pretty much a no win situation for those poor guys.

  9. Lisa - what is going on? We are on the same wave length AGAIN. Today, I'm wearing a blue turtle neck, with a statement necklace, and a printed skirt. My posts are always a few days behind, so again this outfit won't be on the blog probably until next week, but that's twice this week, that I go to your blog and I'm wearing a bizarro version of your outfit. ;)

Also thanks for the thoughtful about the homophobia/racism post.

  10. Oh I am so guilty of the half-empty water glasses :( I try to drink lots of water, and I think my husband is always gathering them up at the end of the day. I really like the colors of that skirt, and the necklaces are a great touch. And I love your freckles! I had a co-worker who had freckles like yours, they are so pretty.

  11. I live alone, so my apartment is exactly the way I want it to look most of the time. However, when the BF comes to visit, I feel like I'm constantly picking up after him. The last time he came down, I had to pull out the vacuum to pick up all of the crumbs he left behind. It drives me nuts. I do have some days that I don't feel like putting away any laundry. Last week I had a huge pile of clothes on one side of my bed. I finally put them away over the weekend.

    1. When we had our own apartments and BF would come over, I'd act all cool about his "casualness" with cleaning - but I think he was on his best behavior back then too. Now the gloves are off!

  13. Outfit comments--wow I love your skirt! And your necklace too. This shade of green is fantastic on you as well.

I feel like such a selfish nomad, but sometimes I just love when my fiance is not home at night (out on business or on drill for the military overnight). I love to watch SATC episodes, play in my closet, eat chips from the bag, paint my nails, pluck my eyebrows and browse the internet to my heart's content. Sometimes I feel bad about that. I love spending time with him as well, but I also love my me time.

  16. First, love this outfit! It's so vintage and modern at the same time. Definitely your classy style!

Second, that's so funny that you are a "closet slob" - love that term! I love to watch the girlie movies/show when he's gone, catch up on my favorite blogs, and paint the nails!

  17. I'm the exact same way! Ryan is no slob or anything, but he is messier than I'd like to be. At least when he's around :) When I'm on my own all bets are off :)

    1. People think that I am weird because I want people to give me a heads up before they show up - it's because I want to tidy up so I can be all hostess-y when they do show up, and not spend my time standing in front of messes or apologizing for the crumb-ly couch! ;o)

  22. Hahahaha you are preaching to the choir here. I want everything to be just-so when anyone besides myself is here, but when I'm alone...all bets are off. Even if there's just an extra blanket out on the couch, I feel a slight tinge of embarrassment if someone sees it!
