♣ ♣ ♣ ♣

The lovely Anne sent me an e-mail last week asking if I could put together a few recs for cold-weather footwear essentials. Now, I know we've all got spring fever, but if you live anywhere north in the States (or San Francisco, apparently), you're either still covered or you know there's yet another snow storm or two in the horizon, so unfortunately many of you gals are not out of the cold foot trenches just yet. Plus now is the perfect time of year to invest in a few cold weather pieces at fantastic savings ... So here are my decidedly "un" expert ideas on what I consider essential winter footwear:

♣  The All-Weather Snow Boot: Gotta have a pair - that's all I can say. Traction. Warmth. Waterproof. My Ugg DeSotos have taken me through Christmas snowpocalypse in NYC faithfully - just make sure yours has the rugged sole like these. They stayed blissfully warm and dry through three hours of shoveling and several other hours of snow frolicking. Sorels also can't be beat - they got the fur!

♣  The Rain Boot: If you live in a warmer weather clime, puddle jumpers are essential footwear as winter precipitation is rain. I personally prefer classic styles but this the perfect style to play up some bold color or fun pattern. My big sis swears by her Burberrys, but my personal faves are Kamiks as the insoles are padded and they've got awesome traction.

♣  The Flat Boot: Wanna the footies completely covered, sublimely comfortable and still be stylish? Then flat boots are for you. There are literally thousands of options out there - my flats for fall included ones from Bed Stu and Anthro (why have I not purchased shoes from Anthro until this winter?) Frye and Madden also make reliable and stylish options - think classic styling, unique details like brass rivets or buckles, a versatile pair you can wear with anything.

♣  The Heeled Boot: This is another style with two million options, but I'd say opt for go-with-anything colors black and brown first. I especially love these ridonkulous hot Choos or Pradas, but I must admit to clomping around like a baby trucker elephant in my heeled boots, so I'd opt for brands like Born that make super-comfy stacked heels that still rock.

♣  The Bootie: This was my cold-weather go-to shoe when I needed the footie coverage but still wanted to rock a cute skirt or dress. I'm a newbie to booties so I only own a basic pair by Vince Camuto but I really dug the lace-up combats, like ones by Seychelles for a more urban look.

What do you gals think? What are your cold-weather foot essentials? What gets you through the winter?

Love in a Pocket

Oh skirts and dresses with pockets, what did I ever do with my hands before you? Even though I don't use you that much except for snacks, I feel like I'm not getting my money's worth when I like pieces nowadays without that don't have you!

I love thee in all your forms: the sneaky on-seam pouches, the saggy fistful sacs, the armor-like security of the zippereds, the shady flaps, the butto - actually, I find you buttoned pockets a little haughty, almost a bit of a tease. Do you want me to put stuff in or don't you? We'll need to chat offline.

Please don't ever decide you're too exposed and go into hiding, disappearing from my fluffy frocks and leaving me to put my hands up on my waist awkwardly. Stay always, because where else can I find random change or a few crumpled dollars, a broken bobby pin, a half-opened pack of Bubble Yum? If you go, I'll no longer receive a little baggy with forgotten belongings from my dry cleaner or hear the clang of leftover quarters in the dryer.

Granted I don't even put my hands in you too often while I wear skirts because I have a tendency to push down with my fists, but I am comforted to know you two little hidden cloth flaps are there, waiting to receiving a handful of Reeses Pieces. So you, my dear pockets, don't go changing.

Respect the Outfits (outtakes)

It's that time again! Don't you hate it when your self-timer goes off unexpectedly or your photographer catches you mid-eye cross? When your "glam" hip lean ends up being a teeter over the couch? When your pet comes barreling into a room or you didn't realize your skirt is all twisted to heck? Especially when you're in the middle of a particularly fierce pose? As style bloggers, I am sure that is part of the bane of our blogee existence, but now it is time to give those photo bloopers their own moment in the sun and for us all to have a good chuckle over each other's perfect imperfectness!

Here's this week's Respect the Outfits post: outtakes edition! ✦   ✦   ✦   ✦

I think it has been far too long without a Pacey status report, as she is now a hearty 31.5 pound pup (nearly 10 pounds heavier than when we got her from the pound at the end of December), who last week had somehow managed to remove the F-lock key from my laptop and before chewing it up.

So what's the Pacey roundup? Well, she has certainly become the main attraction in our little family and has adapted quickly to her new high-rent (haha) lifestyle. Pacey loves nothing more than lounging in comfort and had no problem locating the comfiest spot in each room in which to flop onto and sprawl out - and you're most likely to find her there snoring peacefully on her back.

Pacey also has an enviable toy collection. No small thanks to my sis and mom there - bringing Pacey into my little fam was a bit like a birth by my family - gifts were mailed and too many pictures exchanged.  Her favorite chewie is a long squeaky black bear which remains to be the only furry toy she has not yet completely torn to shreds in a day. In fact, I think Pacey has a soft spot for the bear because she does bring it on to the couch or into the bed with her and does in fact snuggle with it often (seriously - proof below, not posed!)

Aside from black squeaky bear, Pacey loves snuggling close to her people, watching TV, munching on Iams biscuits (but not so much the Milk Bones), and long leash-free walks in the park where she can tear through the shrubbery and arrive back at the car utterly content and exhausted (but she's still a bit shy around other dogs and will sit down and wait for other dogs to pass before she continues on her doggy escapades - which unfortunately does make her a bully magnet for the local bossy chihuahua named Chicken, who will run into your house and "own it" if you're not careful!).

For you gals with pets, how are your adorable animals doing?

Worn out Pacey still attempting to play as she is falling asleep.

A little blue victim of Pacey's play. And her infamous black squeaky.

Crushing on a Manor

Thanks for all your kind comments yesterday, ladies. I read every one of them multiple times and truly have takens all your words to heart. It is good to read your reassurances that I don't need to feel that I am missing out on something that I need to be doing with my life right now, and it's great (?) to know that so many of you can also relate. Ah, being a girl ... especially with a Chinese mama (all you Chinese gals you know what I mean!) I know I should just live my life the way that feels best for me and my BF right now, but it's hard sometimes!

For matters regarding marriage and children, I sometimes don't know if it is something on my mind because I do want it all, or because I think that is what I should want. Or if I don't think I want it because I am internally rebelling or don't know if I am just not ready now for it - but then if I am not ready now, will I ever be ready? Welcome to my head ...

So of course it would make sense that I needed some lightness in my mind today and did dressing the easy way - a nice printed dress. And my favorite type of printed dress, the shirt dress!

Dress: Anthropologie Maeve wightwick manor (similar here or kinda here or not at all but fab here)
Belt: H&M double buckle (worn here before - similar here or here or snakebite-ish here)
Boots: Born taro (worn here before - similar here or here)
Tights: Target
Necklace: Anthropologie nueva granada (worn here before - similar here or simple here)
Bracelet: J. Crew studded bangle (similar set here or here)

♥   ♥   ♥   ♥

And adding more lightness to the fluffy girl fodder and one awkward segway: Do you gals have any unobtainable strong women that you crush over and admire from your distant little perches? Though my preferences have changed in the past few years especially since who is hot or not changes more than the wind nowadays, but my all-time fave girl crush has to be Sandra Bullock.

A hot girl who likes to crack jokes and doesn't mind making fun of herself? Yes, please! I don't know if it is so much of a crush than I either want to be her (except for the whole Jesse James and baby David thing - but keep the Oscar and millions of dollars) or want to hang out with her and trade trucker jokes over some brewskis!

New girl crush? Emily Blunt, of course. She's also very hot and also appears quite laidback and cool - plus she seems to do casual or haute couture with equal ease!

An honorable girl crush mention needs to go out to Kristen Stewart. I know we may not all agree, but I think she's a darn good actress. And she's kind of too cool for this whole "young Hollywood" thing and would rather bomb around in Cons and a plaid shirt than get all ruffled and eyelash-curled up (OK, a little annoying, but I admire her for sticking to her guns). Plus scoring the Twilight gig and R. Patz?

Sure I should probably have loftier girl crush pursuits - I should be telling you that I crush on Hillary Clinton for her strength of character and leadership abilities or Martha Stewart for her crafty entrepreneurial spirit or Ursula Burns for almost single-handedly turning around the fortunes of one of the largest companies in the US - but no, I like cute brunettes who act in comedies and look good wearing stilettos and pretty dresses.

And that's probably all the time you've got for me this week, so I'll leave it you now - who are you girl crushes and why?
