Frugal Glittered Plaid

IMG_8690

I am a known non-thrifter. I've seen the awesome steals and rare hauls some of you gals have pulled in and I am jealous. But I just can't do it - partly because when I do go to Goodwill or whatnot, I never find anything good and partly ... well, let's be honest, I have visions of grubby old clothes with yellowing around the collars and musty moth-ball-mixed-with-BO smells and I am secretly horrified.

I totally know that I am being snotty and down-right thrift-ignorant here, I get that. But I guess I need some guidance, a helping hand that can lead me to the right stores, give me the patience to sort through the racks for the gems, and the vision to see beyond what something may look like hanging on a crammed rack in a dimly lit corner.

Of course I was thrilled when modernmom contacted me and offered up an item from one of her recent thrifting outings that didn't work out for her - this awesome Esprit skirt that she got for a song. The bright colors and flippy shape made my fashion heart sing as soon as I saw it. It's kind of schoolgirl, kind of holiday, very fun.

So check me out over at modernmom's blog, I Dream of Anthropologie! She's featuring me today and offering up some advanced thrifter advice on finding some awesome steals of your own see you there!

  1. Lisa, you look fab and love the pairing of the skirt with the shoes.

I am like you, envious of those who find treasures during their thrifty outings, but personally, I can't find anything that doesn't look overly used. Back in the day, say early college, I did venture out a few times and found a couple of gems, but it was always hit or miss.

Nowadays I just don't think I have the patience for it, so I just stick to what I know, ie, Anthro, JCrew and F21!

  2. Love your shoes! And I totally get what you mean about not being a great thrifter. I finally ventured into Second Time Around when I was in Boston and didn't see anything remotely interesting. Wait -- does that place even count as thrifting?

  3. Oh Lisa, you summed up my feelings about thrifting better than I ever could. I'm naturally a clean freak and kind of a germaphobe so that's what I'm blaming on ;)

Glitter loafers are everywhere this fall and I really like the pair you picked out!

PS - Not sure if you saw my reply on cameras, but it's here if you haven't. Good luck with your search!

  6. I used to be a thrift snob, I understand! But I am totally reformed and it was blogs that got me to do it... I of course would shop vintage before (dry cleaned already) but now I get in the trenches myself and look. Lovely skirt!

  9. Fun skirt! I have thrifted once or twice, and found some nice things. If you have a hard time walking into a thrift shop, you might try a consignment store to break yourself in ... prices are higher, but there is better quality and no pawing through loads of nasty old tees. :)

  11. That skirt is perfect for your style, and so nice that MM thought of you! I love it when it feels like you've found a great thrift item and you know know just who it is right for (best when it's right for me but...)

Call me up if you're ever in Montreal and we'll have some thrifting fun! It's often all about looking for a specific colour or fabric. (duly warned- I have great luck when I go shopping with others, however since we're pretty size-similar I may share...)

  12. I'm also apprehensive about thrifting! There's a local second hand store that is a little more upscale, and while it's not exactly budget friendly, I'm using it to get my foot in the door so to speak!

  21. LOVE those shoes.

I have trouble thrifting as well. First of all, most of our selection in small town Alabama isn't that great (NASCAR starter jackets, anyone?). Second of all, I just don't have the time or patience. I'd rather shop online and sign up for sale alerts. I'd love to be one of those gals with vintage Chanel jackets that I got for $100, but I just don't think it's in the cards!
