And the Beat Goes On

I think part of what makes life fun is the ability to try new things and find new fun hobbies and temporary obsessions. But what about the stuff you've tried - and regardless of personal enjoyment - you just find yourself truly bad at? Like the universe is telling you not-so-subtlely that this is not for you, practice will not help, go do something else.

I've got quite a long list of stuff I've tried, gave others a good laugh about and have quit, not to look back: like when I was in junior high and aspired to be singer, but I was so truly tone deaf that I couldn't make it onto chorus - and this was not Glee-worthy chorus, this was like intramural chorus where you pretty much sang for each other and your big finale was singing in the same room you practiced in for your parents who are supposed to be nice and encouraging about these things.

Convincing myself that I could keep up with all my buddies - you know the ones who are used to taking ad hoc trips to Taos, Breckenridge or Stowe and are experts at the black and double black diamond runs, yeah those guys - and going up the ski slope with them because those colors don't mean anything, skiing is easy, you're just going down right. Whereupon I pretty much snowballed my way over that mountain - there was a good portion of the slope that I conquered on my back, one leg up in the air, head pointing downhill. But don't worry about this one, I've actually purchased my own skis and boots, and one day, maybe I'll be invited back to another group ski trip.

Five tequila shots in a row.

Wearing skinny cropped pants.

Putting on eye makeup without stabbing myself with the mascara wand or looking like a bandmember from Kiss with the liner.

Reading or writing Chinese. Several summers of Chinese camp have told my dad's wallet that there is no hope for me.

But for as many things that I truly suck at, there are ten times more things that I am bomb-diggity-good at. And for every new thing I find that just doesn't work for me, I'll go find something that does. That's what makes life interesting, right?

So what have you tried that you can now label as an "epic fail" so badly that you've pretty much given up? And because we don't want to be about doom and gloom here - you've also got to include something unexpected that you just totally rock!

  3. You look lovely and cheerful, and I love Pacey's cameo at the end. I think Sophie and Pacey would like each other.

I, too, have a long list of epic fails. Like you, my music teachers in school told me that I could not sing. I sing anyway (in the shower/car/classroom) to spite them. I cannot snap my fingers (never have), french braid (so confusing/frustrating for me), or roller skate (do not invite me to a roller rink party). Other than that, I think I'm doin' alright!

  4. Oh yeah, Pacey sent me a text message that said you were getting tired of that Tucker blouse and she could mail it to me. Thanks Pacey! xo

  6. Oooh, I'm loving all the print love your giving! From the skirt now to blouse!! I have had several epic fails in my life, but I only can list a few.

    1) Double dutch: Smacked in the head too many times to count. I gave up and moved to hand games..lol

    2) Whistle: Tried and Failed!

    3) French: 3 years in high school and I can only say hello plus I love you! ha ha

    4) Roller skate: Fell and brought several people down. I was never invited to a skating party after that! :(

Totally rock at singing, dancing and crafts (sewing)!!

  7. My epic failure...don't laugh....is in the kitchen. I cannot cook to save my life, my mother cringes, my father worries I'll never marry, and my brother laughs so hard he is about to hyperventilate. I kid you not..this is the Chinese girl that burned...rice. Yeah you read that right, forgot to put water not only with the rice but also outside in the rice cooker. Ugh....

  8. you are an excellent colour mixer, that's for sure! I once tried out for the basketball team in junior high- I don't know what my weeny non-athletic self was thinking! I just liked their t-shirts, I guess.
um, I'm a good speller and have a good thrifting eye I hope!

  10. I love your skirt! I have tried something similar in H&M today and reviewed it. It looks really cute.

My epic fail is trying to put on a pro make up:p I just can't seem to make it that good.:)
    I'm not really a heavy make-up user so it doesn't matter I guess :))

  11. I can't get enough of the patter on this blouse. I have tried to water ski for the past 3 summers and still can't get up. I'm on the verge of giving up on that. And for something I totally rock at? Time estimation. It's pretty unreal how good I am :)

  13. Love the orange skirt Lisa!

I have so many things I can't do: Rollerskate, iceskate, snap my fingers, whistle, cartwheel, ball games .. oh I could go on and on and on.

One thing I CAN do is dance - I (hope that I) have great sense of rhythm and can pick up steps easily!

    Have a great weekend :)

  14. I'm in love with the styling of this outfit. The tribal and orange? Bomb-diggity-good, lady.

I'm terrible at lots of things: video games, most sports, especially skiing. Things that I rock at? I am really good at job interviews, organizing and carrying a tune serviceably well, though.

  15. That J. Crew top is so cute! I've been on a J. Crew shopping kick lately. So much to love!

  16. You know what? I'm pretty sure I could list some epic fails, but all I can think about is going grocery shopping right now. BUT I really wanted to comment. hahaha

In response to your "don't know how I do Insanity"...I don't either. Now, there's something I kinda THOUGHT would be an epic fail for me, but so far so good. :)

  17. I suck at roasting chicken- always comes out raw even when its been in the oven for what feels like ages. It's something I have not managed to get right yet. The microwave is handy for that kind of thing! Also, I suck at sports...pretty much all of them. Oh and swimming. The list goes on!

  18. that top has such a great print, and i love it paired with the skirt.

I kind of feel like i'm just mediocre at everything.

  20. I'm a legend in my own mind or at least try to stay propped up there. But I cannot audibly snap my fingers w/my left hand nor can I swim. My brother, sister learned in their first summer after my third+ summer of trying. My sister's kids learned in their 1st summer. I still don't how. Hoping to rectify that in the future. On the upside, I can sing & can DIY some things I see online just looking at them. I'm talking tank truck birthday cakes!

  21. Such tough questions to answer. I really had to think. I have never actually had an epic fail. Nor am I bomb ditty good at anything. I walk dead center down the middle of the road. OK, maybe I lean a little more to the accomplished right.

I had a wonderful Mother that encouraged me to make choices for myself. I wanted to try everything. She never had to push me to practice Piano. I loved to play.

As a result, I have a well rounded knowledge base, but that also meant I didn't stick with anything long enough to excel.

One thing I am sure of about you. You have excellent taste and an eye for color. It would never occur to me to go with Pewter colored shoes.

    You excel as a blogger!

  23. organizing and keeping piles of mail off my counter. I bring a new level to being awful at it. oh, and being quiet. Also not good at that. But I bake a mean chocolate chip cookie and can accompany choirs quite well. And, I'm great at spending money on clothes.:)

  24. You could be my blogworld sister...am so tone-deaf that when I sing in the car the hubs turns the music up louder and, although I can understand Mandarin orally can't read or write to save my life.

I am good at yoga and taking pics though :)

Love love love the top. I want to learn to have an eye for things like you do, Lisa!

  25. I am in love with this top, the print is gorgeous and your skirt perfectly accents it! I had some epic fail skiing moments but I recently took an 18+ beginner ballet class... and although I was tragically bad it was so comical that I stuck with it.

  27. Love the photo on the left (second row) and of course, the one where Ms. Pacey shows up.

After MANY swimming lessons I still suck at it. But I can run really fast (former sprinter) and can bury a mean volleyball in the opponents' field.

  28. All sports for me. i suck at them. I always think I'll be good at sports because I did dance for so long and think I know my body. But apparently put a ball into the situation and I can't do anything!

  29. What a fantastically hopeful post! I think I'm pretty average at everything. That's not to sound cocky. It's actually sort of depressing that I'm not superb at really anything. Oh, wait. I take that back. I'm absolutely stellar at board games. Any and all board games. Now what can I do to make that into a career?

  30. First of all, I love the print on this top.

Now for the things I'm bad at:

writing anything that doesn't look like a 2nd grader's scribblings, wakeboarding or water skiing, ordering at a restaurant (i always get anxiety that i'm going to order the wrong thing), remembering what i did five minutes ago... the list goes on and on.

Things I'm good at? Boggle (I have never lost!); dancing; picking out gifts for people.
