Love in a Pocket

Oh skirts and dresses with pockets, what did I ever do with my hands before you? Even though I don't use you that much except for snacks, I feel like I'm not getting my money's worth when I like pieces nowadays without that don't have you!

I love thee in all your forms: the sneaky on-seam pouches, the saggy fistful sacs, the armor-like security of the zippereds, the shady flaps, the butto - actually, I find you buttoned pockets a little haughty, almost a bit of a tease. Do you want me to put stuff in or don't you? We'll need to chat offline.

Please don't ever decide you're too exposed and go into hiding, disappearing from my fluffy frocks and leaving me to put my hands up on my waist awkwardly. Stay always, because where else can I find random change or a few crumpled dollars, a broken bobby pin, a half-opened pack of Bubble Yum? If you go, I'll no longer receive a little baggy with forgotten belongings from my dry cleaner or hear the clang of leftover quarters in the dryer.

Granted I don't even put my hands in you too often while I wear skirts because I have a tendency to push down with my fists, but I am comforted to know you two little hidden cloth flaps are there, waiting to receiving a handful of Reeses Pieces. So you, my dear pockets, don't go changing.

  2. You are so adorable. I love pockets for the same reason although I, like you, tend to not even use them for the most part!

This outfit is FABULOUS in so many ways. The colors, the details, the fit, everything is fabulous. You look amazing!

  3. For some reason, your outfit today looks yummy...(something must be wrong with me today...)but it really does! Perhaps because of all the beautiful colors you are wearing?

    Looking great!

  4. I love this color combo you have going on here. Good old Anthro...I swear, they really have a good thing going there. I went there with a client yesterday...new spring stuff has just arrived! DANGER!

  5. I don't even know where to start on this one. Let's just say that often, the presence of pockets on a dress/skirt can completely sell me on a dress/skirt I otherwise didn't like that much. And I loveee your skirt!

  6. I love the combination of purple and mustard. I was just thinking this morning of doing the same color combo in an outfit. Your belt just brings it all together.

  7. Cuteness, I've got mad love for some pockets! Especially when I'm at parties and don't want to look random with my hands just hanging there.... love the skirt and how fun is that belt? I wore it yesterday and kept touching the giraffe, appropriately of course ;)

  9. I thought the scarf was completely separate from your top! Love how tucked and wore it. I know what you mean by pockets .. I get socially distressed and awkward when I'm in public and I realize my dress/skirt doesn't have pockets!

  10. Haha what a cute post. I love pockets as well. Who ever invented this should get a big fat kiss from Pacey!

  11. Funny!.....And I can totally relate. I like all of my dresses and skirts to have pockets....not that I use them that much if they do have......but somehow it makes the clothing item that much better!

  17. I love your ode to pockets! I absolutely love your belt, it brings the skirt and shirt together in amazing ways!

btw-I feel the same way about buttoned pockets, who do they think they are?

  18. i thought for sure that dog was gonna be stuffed into an oversized pocket. sooo disappointed. ;) i, too, am a pocket girl, and the presence of pockets has more than once sealed a clothing deal for me. love, love, love.

  19. I am thrilled that I am not alone for my love of pockets! I hope they never go out of style (did you hear that, Anthro, J. Crew, H&M, Zara, and all the rest of you retailers I like - you know who you are)!

What in the world did we do BEFORE pockets got all in fashion?!

LilMissSeamstress - there are so many WORSE words than yummy - I'll take what I can get, haha!

TrophyBoutique - Anthro always throws me off. I went this weekend with two specific pieces in mind, tried them both and didn't love then, and walked out of there with a few items I never even considered before - they've got some sort of magic grip on my wallet!

Dea - good thing, those are respectable and clean cartoon giraffes! ;o)

Banhannas - you'll see me in public looking like I'm trying to tear into my dress or skirt when I realize they have no pockets and my hands start flailing!

Callandra - it is just like a comfort to know that they are there!

Steph - you cracked me up - away with the buttoned pockets!

Kcookski - Oh lady, I'll have to wait for a maxi skirt with a maxi-size pocket to fit the pup - she's over 30lbs already!

  24. This top is so gorgeous, Lisa! I stared at the closeup for a good minute trying to figure out if I can recreate it. I should have just scrolled down and read that it's a scarf + top combo.

  30. Ooh, Lisa! You know how much of a sucker I am for purple and yellow....you did it so well here! I love this combination. I have found lately that I too have become quite the pocket snob. I'll turn my nose up at any skirt or dress that doesn't give me the CHOICE. I totally feel you on this!

  34. Gold and Purple are such a winning combination. I do so love the City Safari Belt. What would I do without pocket to put my Willy Wonka Gobstoppers. Without a pocket full of sugar I could never make it through those long, boring, staff meetings. Kiss Pacey for me.

  35. You are so cute Lisa - this is such a sweet ode to your skirt pockets! I love pockets on skirts too, but find a lot of them don't have this option. Adorable outfit - the gold and purple is a fab combo.
Also saw your inspiring interpretation on JG's blog - very well done!
