Monochrome Me

Today I broke out a piece I purchased literally months ago and have never actually worn out. I ran into this dress at Anthro on sale during late summer and purchased it on a whim - it is snuggly, warm and apparently I had no idea what to do with it (sleeveless wool dress with a deep v-neck - huh?!) So it has languished in my closet until recently when I saw a few fellow bloggettes wear blouses underneath their dresses to winterize them. A-ha, brilliant!

Yes the random loose piece of fabric from the waist is a bit weird - no, I guess it doesn't bother me.

That got me to thinking - I know I'm not the only gal with way too many things in her closet and with pieces that either don't get worn or don't get worn enough. So for the next Respect the Outfits post - please send me some outfit pics with piece(s) from your closet that don't get enough love!

This is a great opp to dig through your closets and pull out long-ignored pieces - use what you've got and think back to why you purchased a certain piece and how you can make it work for your daily wardrobe. Bring it back! À la Tim Gunn: Make it work!

Shoot your pic along with your outfit details and info on what piece(s) you are wearing that doesn't get enough attention and why - send them to respecttheshoes(at)live.com. Post will go up on Monday, January 24!

Pacey can't stay away when a camera is around - but then she can't face the camera either!

Dress: Anthropologie Sparrow cordial embrace (similar-ish here - not similar but ruffly cute here)

Belt: Anthropologie infinity (worn here before - similar here)
Tights: Anne Klein herringbone (similar here)
Shoes: UO Kimchi Blue wingtips (worn here before)

  1. Lisa, I am new to your blog and I really enjoy your outfits! I like how you paired this outfit up with the blouse, shoes and belt. It makes me think of 3 Loft wrap dresses I have that I NEVER wear! They all have some sort of print on them, maybe I should try a plain white oxford underneath them? Makes me want to update them, thanks!!!

  3. Very pretty! I love that paisley shirt - and the SHOES - gorgeous!

I think we all have pieces in our closets that don't get enough love. Great idea for your next outfits post:)

  4. I've been thinking about this dress lately, remember that I haven't worn it. I like how you styled it :-)

  5. What a pretty dress! Love the draping in the front. Could also work with a cami underneath and a jacket or cardi on top for winter months!

  6. I actually drafted a post about this same topic! I do sometimes buy items that don't seem to fit into my wardrobe seamlessly. They can only be worn with one or two things that I already own. With limited styling options, those pieces get less love.

  8. This dress looks great with a blouse underneath. As always, I love the shoes too :) I think your next edition of reader's outfits will be a good one. I was just thinking about some items in my closet that I haven't worn in a really long time. I'll see what I can pull together and send it your way :)

  9. What a great idea for a reader submission! I can think of an embarrassing number of things that I could use in this... Yikes! I love the blouse you paired your particular dress with. It has a very 1970s secretary look to it, and I mean that as a compliment because I personally love that aesthetic myself! The shoes are fierce, too!

  10. Great look Lisa, I'm a firm believer in blouses/long sleeve tops under dresses.

Trying to mentally picture what is unworn/unloved... I'm sure I'll come up with something if I have a root around!

And lol, if I participated in this challenge, I would have to send you about 50 pieces, sigh.

  17. What an excellent idea! I just did some major closet cleaning and surely I'll be able to find something new (new to me, but old to my closet i suppose) to wear. Btw, thanks for signing up for the valentine's day swap! It was super fun last year. I'll wait a few more days to see if anyone else is interested and then I'll email everyone this weekend :)

  18. What a fab idea for your feature. I'm surprised you haven't worn that dress until now, as it looks extremely versatile and perfect for layering. I have a lot of things in my closet that i have neglected :-)

  19. OK, that last pic is very cute: you and Pacey each showing a foot dressed in white.

  21. I bought that dress in burgundy and wore it yesterday actually! I love how comfy it is. The fabric piece on the front is weird, but overall I love the style of it. I haven't thought to layer a blouse under it though! I've mostly been going for a cami underneath and a longish cardigan on top. Thanks for the styling idea!

  24. Great way to wear that dress. It works perfect as a little jumper.

How come you always look so fabulous in the perfect button down skirts and I look like...well...a stuffed shirt! Everytime I see one I want to buy it bc I think of how good you look in them and then I think of the few I have already languishing in my closet and how I don't wear those! Hmmmmm....perhaps I need to put together an outfit for your feature!!

  25. addicted to JCrew/Ann Taylor - I need to think of more creative ways to wear my clothes too - too many things in my closet get "forgotten"!

Ady - I am a terrible shopper in that respect, I never think of how a piece fits into my current wardrobe, I always end up buying each piece as a stand alone, then am stuck scratching my head when I get home!

amy kelinda - haha, I was thinking I looked like some sort of quirky librarian, I just need to dig out my old glasses!

goldenmeans - I know what you mean! Unfortunately that still doesn't stop me from adding to my closet collection ...

    Tippy -I can't wait!

Rose - haha, I didn't even notice that before - so true!

Leana - unfortunately I don't have much going on up front and when I wear this dress by itself, it is a wee too low cut for my liking. I appreciate that I'm not the only one who likes this dress though!

Pamela - J Crew's perfect fit shirts and Lands' End Canvas' shirts have been my button-down life-savers. Plus tucking my shirts in has been like a revelation for me, no joke!

  26. I love the shoes you choose with this. They give it such a modern kick! And I agree that J. Crew and Land's End shirts are fantastic. They fit so well and the quality is superb.
