Check Out the Stripes

This is an outfit I wore last Friday for some casual end of the week fun. I took inspiration from Eleanor and Courtnee, two fantastically fashionable do-it-all women who are pros at strong style and rocking a peg leg boy jean.

One of the many reasons that I am so obsessed with clothes is how I love how choosing an outfit in the can help to define my mood for the day. Putting on a sparkly number will suddenly make even a dreary evening in seem like a special occasion. A strong-shoulder suit jacket and killer patent heels gives me the subconscious air of authority I need for vendor negotiations. A flippy skirt will have me dancing down the street.

What I love most is how putting together a great outfit or specific piece of clothing can give me a shot of stand-up-taller-shoulders-back-flip-of-the-hair-big-smile-on-my-face confidence. There's something about a blazer that makes me feel competent and put-together. I think it's the mix of the defined shoulders and the fit-and-flare of the waistline that makes me feel more woman-ly.

What piece of clothing do you have that makes your feel like a strong and confident woman?

  10. Oh I love that you are wearing stripes and checks! I also love that post with bloggers and their dogs. I have an extremely photogenic dog, myself. Great ideas!

  11. Adorable! A great mix of patterns that is flattering and looks intentional, not accidental (which sometimes happens when mixing prints). The necklace is perfection to add color and brighten your face. Great look!!!

  12. This is excellent! I love the combo of the stripes and gingham check. I'm a lover of gingham...sigh, so just about any combo including gingham makes me drool. ;) I especially love the jacket ~ the whole outfit is crisp and fresh! It reminds me of a perfect spring day. ~ Susan

  13. I adore everything about this outfit. It's casual but so put together. I love the pattern mixing and of course how can you go wrong with black and white, and the splash of colour from the necklace is perfection!

  14. Of course my power piece is the acting out skirt. I always feel so independent and strong in it! Haha...and I can pair it with anything...it'll still make me feel that way.

  16. Stripes and plaids? Never thought to put those 2 combos together. You've just inspired me! I have a navy Anthro blazer and that makes me feel more confident and I exude girl power (at least in my mind). It has a teeny bit of padding so I feel like Joan Collins from Dynasty, lol.

  17. You are so friggin' cool. I love the stripes and checks paired together!!! And your rolled jeans and heels make me wish I could pull off that look {midget legs make it a "no no"}.

  18. I wore a similar outfit like this on the weekend (but you already know that)! Looks great, I love this striped blazer and these jeans are fantastic. I always thought I had to wear blazers with skinny jeans for some reason, but as you show so beautifully, that is not the case.

  19. Mixing patterns is my favorite rule to break! The blazer looks great, espically with the jeans!

  20. I love your outfit. The combination of patterns and the pop of color from your necklace and belt looks fantastic! Wearing a scarf always makes me feel chic and pulled together. It's my best fashion accessory.

  21. That is an amazing combo. I completely love the bold stripe on the jacket, how it's paired with the small check AND the great pops of color from the necklace!

  23. Yay, this outfit is awesome! You are officially up on ke.KE, by the way. I agree with you that a blazer can make you feel so bold and confident, and with the amazing striped print of yours, I'm sure you feel awesome in it! I think it's amazing how gingham and stripes really SHOULDN'T work well together, but you make it look so cohesive and effortless!

  24. I love the pattern mixing! Very pretty, and I love the jeans!

  25. I never would have thought that stripes and gingham would go together, but you made it work AND made it look easy!

Honestly, anything but jeans makes me feel strong and confident (for the most part), which is why I don't wear them anymore :)

  26. I love your pairing of the two black and white patterns with the coral!

  27. I always feel comfortable in a dress. No matter what it looks like if it's a dress I'll feel more confident in it than a pair of jeans.

  28. Primo styling! LUVE IT! and the necklace and belt are cute accessories!

  29. This is such a casual and gorgeous outfit! Love all the bold patterns and colors pairing. Definitely will be copying :)

I find myself reaching for my theory blazer whenever I need a boost. It never fails to make me stand taller and act more confident.

  31. What fun pattern mixing. I am totally chomping at the bit for warmer weather to wear rolled jeans!

Just wearing heels makes me feel confident. I feel like I stand straighter and definately walk taller.

  32. Oh my CUTE! I love the stripes and gingham and cheery color of your belt - you look FABULOUS!!!

Hmmm...is it weird that the only time I really want to feel confident isn't in a powerful/in control sort of way, but more of I'm going to be surrounded by drop dead gorgeous friends and I feel insecure so I want to wear something I feel I can hold my own in next to them. I am no good at this whole girl-power movement, lol.

  33. Seriously...fantastic! The stripes, gingham and the pop of color are pure perfection!!!

    ps-thanks for the shour out;)

  34. Gosh, i totally dig your outfit Lisa. You look so confident in it.
I just wrote on Lisa of Sweet Laundry's blog that blazers are brilliant at adding instant smartness to an outfit.
It is true that I feel better when i make the effort to dress up and make up. I feel my best in a fabulous dress and heels.

  35. Oh Man! Everything I wear makes me feel great. I won't wear it if it doesn't. But if I have to name an item it would be my Haviland Sweater Coat from Anthro 3 years ago that I bid and won on eBay in December. It's feminine, has a Vintage look, and it dresses up anything in a heartbeat. At my age I don't need power, I need pretty.

You look smashing in this outfit Lisa. The B&W stripes and gingham are spruced up to perfection with the Orange necklace and belt. The colors are so classice together, but you spun the look right into Modern. And you definitely got the legs, and the GIRL POWER to pull this all together. But aren't your spectacular ankles cold?

I have plenty of stuff in my closet that qualifies as not my favorite. I will need a miracle to get an outfit together in time for your Readers Outfits. I'm sure going to try my best to do it.

  36. Hi Lisa,

Thanks for posting over on my blog... very sweet of you! I absolutely LOVE the stripes and gingham together... oh my goodness. what a great idea!!! The item that makes me feel like a strong woman is different depending on the setting. Work = a good jacket; Social gathering = Casual dress with great jewelry; Everywhere = wearing confidence makes me feel strong and in control of my emotions and surroundings.

    Thanks for asking! Cheers!

  38. That is a BOLD look. The coral fits in nicely!

  39. Thanks for your comments, ladies! I knew I wanted to wear the Hello Sunday blazer because I hadn't in forever and when I started to put it up against possible shirts, I thought "what the heck, if I am going bold, then I better go for broke!" when I fell upon the gingham shirt.

I love the mix of patterns when you stay within the same colors!

Ady - my first instinct was to pair the blazer with red, a la you!

Cindi - ooh, the acting out skirt is good! It's a bit like, look at the fabric and length - I am a serious business woman, but then there's the shape and ruching - I am not afraid to be pretty and fun!

Lisa - shoulder pads are back in, bring in the Joan Collins!

amy kelinda - thanks! It is kind of weird, but I felt really good all day, like I was cooler than I was, haha!

Sara - I'm STILL amazed you don't own a pair of jeans! I'd be lost!

Jan - I know what you mean! On a similar line, when I really need to "project authority", I tend to lean towards the more masculine items in my closet: blazers and trousers. That may not say a whole lot to girl power either! ;o)

Laura - heck, yes, my ankles and feet froze! But heck, beauty is sometimes about discomfort, isn't it, and I figured I had been wearing boots to death for a while now, time to break things up!

vintageglammz / Sherry Jarwin - I've been wearing skirts and dresses a TON over the past year as I started blogging but I still feel kind of like I'm playing dress up! When I need to project power, I tend to stay away from skirts or dresses - funny, huh. When can I be comfortable like you gals and just be OK feeling pretty in a dress? (and still know I am confident and strong?)

  40. love the neutral pattern mixing. black and white are my favorites.
and strong and confident clothing? my running tights. i feel hot in them and i have to be confident to be running down the road with all my glory showing.
