That 70's Dress

I'm probably the last person in the Anthro blog community to try these dresses on, but I snagged them during this week's sale (plus one off Ebay) and wanted to get your opinion on whether or not I should keep one of them. Can you guess by my title which dress I'm questionable about?  ;oP

♥  Anthropologie Edme & Esyllte Sugar-Coated shirtdress (now on sale $59.95 - no longer online) : I took my true size in this and the fit was about right. What did I like? I like the colors are perfect for fall and winter, the comfort were great, the cotton fabric was not too heavy and skirt wasn't crazy full. The length was also good on my 5' 2" frame.

Things that I don't love about the dress? I wish it wasn't a spread collar, which makes me feel like I need to wear something underneath since I'm not exactly appreciatively endowed up high. Also, with the bodice area-only buttons and the side zip, it was strangely difficult to get out of - I guess my shoulders are pretty wide? I spent time more time than I wanted with the dress hunched right around my shoulders trying to undo the arm ties to get more leverage - big fun.

And the print ... I still can't figure out if I am in love with or hate the print. Half the time while wearing this dress, I was expecting Kelso and Hyde to come waltzing into my room holding out a doobie for me.

So what do you think - keep, or "blech" send this back?!

♥  Anthropologie Nell Couture June, July, August dress (now on sale $69.95): I've wanted this dress forever and thought it'd be June 2011 before it would finally go on sale. This is another comfy-as-heck knit pullover dress (with pockets!), but I have to admit to being a tad disappointed with the fabric when I got it - for the original price, I thought it'd be lined like the Perilla dress or at least a more substantial knit. However, this is one of those dresses I can probably pack into a ball for two days and still be able to pull out to wear. Keep!

♥  Anthropologie "Heck if I Know" dress from Moulinette Soeurs: I've never seen this dress before so I have no idea what it is called, but got it off Ebay recently. It is navy blue with a faint plaid pattern in deep red/brown and is lined in fuchsia. It is not stretchy, but has great ruched details along the sleeves and neckline. The fit is spot on for me, I can't wait to wear this dress for work!

  1. I like the first and third dress. Not feeling the print of the second.

I really like the print of the first dress, but you mention so many things that you're not happy with and if you're not comfortable in then I say it's a no go.

You're 5'2"??? Wow, always thought you were much taller! Didn't know you were a fellow petite!

  2. That last dress looks AMAZING on you. I also love the first dress. I wanted to get it, but it was sold out between sale day and pay day. I can't wait to see you rocking both of these!

  3. I love the 3rd dress. It looks so pretty on you and I can tell by your pose that you're in love with it.I love the design and fit on you. The other two...meh.

  5. Love the That 70s Show reference! I think the dress looks great on you, but can understand why you'd be hestitant.... I know when I'm hesitant, I normally never wear the item... so I think you just need to be true to your personal style.

I've never been crazy for the June July August... I think itd be great for a hot summer day, but more dresses like that will come... maybe get a credit and get something for winter.

  6. That last dress is absolutely gorgeous on you! Great sale haul. The first dress is great, but if you don't LOVE it maybe it'll be a good excuse to get something else instead (:

  7. I am not a fan of the second dress but I simply love the first and the third dress...especially the third, it is perfect for work and I can see it being so versatile. Great haul!

  9. I think the Sugar Coated Dress looks really cute (I don't think you need a cami or anything underneath from the pictures), but if you don't think you'll reach for it very much because of the fit and the print, I'd return it and use the money for something you 100% adore! You seem 100& satisfied with your other two dresses (they look so fab!!!!). Be true to your own style, just like E Hayes said above! You know if you'll wear it or not! :)

  10. You look fabulous in the last dress--the cut and color really compliments you. I'm feeling meh on the first one, but the second one looks really comfy and easy to wear.

  11. That last dress is fantastic on you! I totally remember it, but the name is escaping me. If you really want to know what it was called, I can go through my anthro library and let you know ;)
I am LOL at Kelso & Hyde coming in and offering you a doobie. I can see why you think that, and I have to be honest, I don't love the dress, but you can pull it off - it's cute on you, but if you don't LOVE it, send it back!

  12. the 3rd dress looks great on you Lisa! So chic! This is what I thought of the Sugar Coated- same issues as you - I had to wear a cami under it or it was too low - and it was soooo hard to get off and on!! So, I returned mine! If I could find it again at a $30 cut, I would buy it!

  13. I actually like the print in the first one! It does look very vintage-like but I'm thinking you would be able to get a similar type of dress for a cheaper price. The third dress looks like it was made for you!!

  14. The Sugar Coated dress is a keep! Keep keep keep! It looks amazing on you- the length, silhouette, print and color, and even the neckline doesn't look too low. I'm not a huge fan of the sad little limp sash, but with a brown leather belt or a wider, sturdier sash? It's *THE* fall dress. I just love it!

  15. I have to comment because this afternoon I tried the Sugar Coated dress on in the store and had the SAME issues with getting it off. So weird about the buttons/zipper. I passed on this one and didn't look back. Anthropologie ALWAYS has something new up their sleeve. I say return this one and see what the November catalog has in store!

  16. I love the last 2 dresses! The last one, especially, looks great on you! I am on the fence about the first one. Usually when I feel just 'meh!' about something, it is a no-go. It will end up at the back of my closet.

  17. Hey Lisa
I know what you mean about the print of the sugar coated dress. It irked me somewhat. Putting that aside, the fit looks OK on you, I don't notice if being too small across the shoulders.
The June, July, August dress is great for your shape and size. It's a keeper. and the Moulinette Soeurs dress is stunning on you. It can be worn to work yet easily translated to work into the evening too with some glam accessories.
    Great purchases!

  18. sugar coated is cute - actually all 3 are and I think the june, july, august dress is such a lisa dress! The material is so soft and comfy on that one. I wanted it all summer too and now that it's on sale I'm too deep into boots and coats to go back!

  19. The third dress is a-mazing!

Hmm...I'm not loving the collar on the first dress. Like you said, the colors are great, and perfect for fall, but if you don't love the print, return it. Two outta three dresses ain't bad. =)

  20. I think the sugar-coated dress looks adorable on you, but at the same time, it does not feel like a YOU dress to me - it's too country-girl! Now, the print on JJA? That's a Lisa dress!

  21. I love dress 2 and 3, especially 3, looks amazing on you! I can see why you don't like the '70s dress. I don't like it either, and I think it's for the reason you hinted at -- the colors and pattern are very '70s. It is fine but blah, I'd return it.

  22. Like everyone else, I love the 3rd dress on you. It definitely looks the most classic out of the three. I think you listed too many cons for the first dress, so I'd probably return. And since you liked the second dress a lot, that one's a keeper =)

  23. keep 'em allllllll! i think they all look great. and i really like the print of the first - it's fun and cute.

  25. I think they all look great on you. But, if it were me, I'd return the sugar coated dress. I tend to freak out a bit when I can't get out of a shirt or dress. I always worry I'll have to go find someone while I'm half naked to cut me out of it, lol.

  26. Thanks for your great feedback! I think I am going to "sit on it" for a week or two, but I am leaning towards returning the Sugar-Coated dress - you all made good points, and I totally agree, if I am unsure with a piece, I probably won't reach for it, especially if I think I may not be able to get out of it next time ... but a part of me still kind of likes it! ;o)

curls-and-pearls - aw, I am flattered that you think I am taller than I am! Though I personally think you are petite, I just consider myself short!

Kim - ah, the phrase "Anthro library" has me in awe! I am just now starting to save info on the stuff I buy and old Anthro catalogs for reference and inspiration!

Tara - I agree about the "belt"!

Alterations Needed - I need to think like that! I guess 2 out of 3 good fitting dresses certainly is not bad!

Lady Cardi - I think the print looks way better from a distance than up close, something for me to think about since if I keep, my time with the dress will certainly be up close!

Lori - I totally agree with you! I always feel a bit like a dummy not being able to get out of something!

  28. All three of those dresses are super cute!! The third one has such a great silhouette! And I think the first dress could be styled a lot of fun ways, and I love the print, but that might just be me! :) (Sorry for the deleted comment, I just made a silly typo!)

  29. How cute is the Sugar-Coated Shirtdress? I say keep, keep, keep! It would look perfect with some cranberry tights. And your Moulinette Soeurs Ebay find really IS a perfect fit on you. The subtle plaid sounds so classic.

  31. Lisa,

Sugar Coated is cute!(I know you have been anticipating), though I am liking the third black dress just a little better~ Personally I am a huge fan of "Moulinette Soeurs" In fact, I am wearing one right now! The silhouette is gorgeous, and such a controlled look with just a little flair!
