The Dim Green Pirate

Quick post today - where did the day go?! One bad thing about fall is that the only times of day I am able to take my outfit pics during the week - early morning or after work - are still pitchy dark outside. So muchos apologies for the dimly lit pics, ladies. And I'm really kind of bummed especially since I personally am digging my outfit today because I broke out some boots for October!

When do you gals take your outfit pics? How long does it take you to take your shots?

  1. I was doing morning shots but that can get tight timewise. Natural light wasn't an issue for me a lot of the time because I was able to get enough artificial light to make the picture work. Now, I'm starting to preplan some outfits and do some pics the day before so I can capture the sunlight. I'd do them in the evening, but man, by the time I get home from work and get settled, I'm not only looking a mess, but I am TIRED! I need a schedule and a groove and I think I found my fall/winter one :)

I also take a ton of shots. I set my camera times on and let it go!

What a cute outfit. I love the green dress with boots.

  2. I do after work shoots, so around 6pm. It seems to work better for the outdoor shots. however, I can't seem to get the lighting right in the house??? I need a tripod, hell, I need a new camera!

  3. haha! I love your title! Those boots look really cute too :)

I always take my pics after work... and I am lazy so I only do 2-3 tops. It only takes about 15 mins from taking the pic, uploading it to the computer, and cropping out the background. I keep telling myself I should try harder to take better shots, but it's just not happening.

  4. Fabulous boots!

Yes, the shorter days make taking remix photos a pain - I usually try to take them in the morning. With the sun coming up later I have to wait a bit longer and have more chance of seeing neighbors, so I'm sure I will have many more outtakes :)

  5. LOL at your title!!! I'm too embarrassed to take outdoor shots as I have to set the camera on timer. I am too rushed in the morning so after work it is but it's a challenge when I don't come home straight from work and I think the winter months will be an even bigger challenge!

    LOVE your boots!

  6. I LOVE this outfit, and those boots!! I have been wearing boots for two weeks straight now, I use any excuse to slip a pair on ")

  7. You look so good, I love it!

I hear you about lighting - it's tough now, I can't imagine what it will be like this January (and then I have to take my coat off! Brr!)!

I always take my pictures after work - I'm usually running late in the mornings as it is, I can't imagine spending time on my pictures as well! Since it gets dark so early now (in St. Louis by 6:45 it's too dark for pictures), I have about an hour and a half window to get to a location, set up, and snap away - sometimes I do better than others. I usually spend about 20 minutes taking my pictures, sometimes longer, it all depends on how they are turning out. Once I take two pictures I like, I take two more, that way I know I'm covered!

  8. I take mine in the morning right before I get in the car for work and Chris takes it for me. It works well right now with our schedule but who knows what will happen later. :)

Great tunic! I love that color on you!

  9. Super cute outfit! I love the color of the dress, and the boots totally rock! I think the lighting just makes the pictures more interesting! Its kinda random when we take pictures here. Through the week I usually try for as soon as my wife gets home from work, in a room with sunset facing windows, but sometimes we don't get to start until after dark anyway. It usually takes 10-20 minutes tops to take pictures. Lighting is definitely proving to be an interesting problem to think about for us too.

  10. Love the vibrant green!

Taking pictures? Oy! It's really whenever I can beg my fiance to do it! Oh! And yes, you were correct with my quote a couple posts back - Julius Caesar, iv.iii.218-224.

  11. I used to take them after work but now it's too dark, but it's also kind of dark when I leave for work (plus I'm always in a hurry). : ( Not sure what I'm going to do! Bathroom pics maybe?

  12. I'm really liking your boots too! Are they brown or black? I can't tell -- hate the afternoon lighting! I take my pictures then too because I'm always in such a rush in the mornings. Once daylight savings time ends, our pics will be even darker lol.

  13. Lisa your tunic looks so cute with the belt and boots! I love it! My lighting is always bad too! Outside pics are best for me but there is not always time!!

  14. I love green on you! it's a color I want to wear more often. I take my pics with the mirror...which is why it's pretty low quality especially because my closet is really dim. :)

  15. During the school year my outfit shoots definitely become less frequent because Matt takes my photos and we usually do it while spending the weekend together. My daily school outfits, on the other hand, I do indoors and with light coming in the window. It sucks that photography is so dependent on lighting, I'm always busy during the day!

I love your outfit today! The green is gorgeous!

  17. I love those boots and that tunic! I take my pics when I can, which is hard with an 8 month old!

  18. Aaarrrrgh! You look great, and not like a pirate. Hawt boots, mama. I often forget to take my OOTDs. I try to do it just before leaving or upon arriving at home. I want to do more while I'm out, but I forget to do that, too. *lol*

  19. I was so thinking the same thing yesterday as I walked out of work and it was getting dark.
Coming into this time of year working retail I am only seeing the light of day on my days off!

I love the title of this post...it sounds like something my husband would say to me!

  20. Lisa, you look so very cute as always! I love the green on you, not pirate at all. the necklace is the perfect accessory and really complements the outfit.
I get my hubby to take my outfit shots, usually on the weekend as we are too busy to take during the week...my shots don't take too long, although sometimes if im not happy with the results, I get my hubby to take em again!!

  21. I love the green, Lisa, and I'm so glad you're able to break out the boots. The chunky heel is so perfect! And your use of leggings is great. I have tended to stay away from leggings, but I think that pairing them with some tall boots may be just the ticket.

Outfit pictures are proving difficult for me these days. My office park is actually fairly nice, so I take many pictures there on the days when I can get out of the office before 6:00 or so...but there's always the danger of being spotted by a coworker! Not sure what I'll be doing once daylight savings rolls around...

  22. I love the green on you!!! Those boots are perfect with it!! I don't think it has any pirate in it!

  23. I absolutely love that dress!! Green is one of my all time favorite colors!

I always have trouble getting outfit photos. My apartment is in a courtyard setup, so the other buildings block all the good sunlight :( Midday is the only time I get a little sunlight, but of course, I'm rarely home at that time. I'd love to be organized enough to plan all my outfits in advance, and photograph them on the weekend, but I don't foresee that happening anytime soon!

  24. My preference is to take photos of things I'm planning to wear during the week. It's helpful if I do this because it means I don't have to search the closet during the week and it's really hard to find the time to do it otherwise, hence the irregularity of my ensemble posts. What generally happens though is that I'm stuck taking photos when I can and they aren't the quality I'd prefer.

  25. I typically do morning shots, but I will definitely start to lose out on daylight fast! I'll prob start relying more on my flash then. I take about 5-10 minutes if it's in the morning and I just hope that at least one of my 10-15 shots works out.

  26. Ah, those boots are envy-worthy! We usually take it during coffee breaks or lunch time so it can go anywhere from 5 minutes or 15 minutes, no more!

  27. Now that it gets dark so early almost all of my pictures are being moved to indoors, and are looking much darker. Picnik.com however has saved my life. It's a free website and I can lighten all of my photos. It helps to make the clothes much more easy to see!

  28. I totally agree with you gals who mentioned needing new equipment - I have already whined about my camera and I just need to get something better! Too bad I would rather spend money on shoes than a new camera, haha!

It is really interesting to hear about how and when you ladies find time to take your pics. Having a physical person taking your pics definitely helps, as well as a good spot you can rely on going to - too bad so far the best spot in the house for me to take my pics at is still my home office! And I don't have a tripod, so venturing outdoors is nearly impossible at this point.

Pamela - I love your new outdoor shots - you've really stepped it up a notch and your photos show!

Erin - I know what you mean! By the time you set things to take the photos and then get them on a post, you may have spent 45 minutes or more already! And then you've (or rather, I) got to think of something to write about too!

Eek - I love your outtakes, keep them coming!

Ashley - sometimes it is hard to get into a photo groove and it takes FOREVER to get any good shots! And then you've got to think of lighting too!

Cee - you totally can't tell in the pics, but the boots are black. Argh, afternoon lighting DOES suck sometimes.

Jamie - I'm not a big leggings person myself but I figure with this outfit I've got the "important parts covered" so it was alright! ;o)

Kelly - I couldn't imagine preplanning outfits. It takes a lot for me to get dressed in one outfit a day, I don't have the brain power to put together two or more!

Lori - my flash shots are usually horrendous! Either I suck as a photographer (completely possible and probably true) or my camera sucks (completely possible and probably true).

  29. Lisa,

This outfit is super cute and flattering. Hearting the Green dress. My new favorite outfit on you.

I take photos outside in early morning light. It's most flattering to me. Cloudy and overcast days are good too. Bright sunlight just makes me squint so I have to turn my face away from the Camera.

Sometimes I will plan an outfit and I can't get a single decent image by myself. So I dump the post for that day.

Last weekend I worked up 4 outfits for a Readers Challenge and the BF photographed them all in one day. It was cloudy. Now all I have to do is find time to Post them all. Phew!!!
