It's Booty Shake Time

A couple of girlfriends and I have started a new exercise pact. We're going to meet up once a week at our friend C's home and take turns "introducing" each other to home fitness routines that work for us (we being a bunch of lazy non-running and not motivated enough to go to the gym in any regularity couch potatoes). I'm up first this week.

I admit with a hanging head that I have been a bum since moving to the ATL a few months ago (so since last year - yeah, that bad) and haven't really been staying active as much as I should be. Only in the last couple of weeks have I picked up my snail's pace of fitness a bit by doing the weekly hikes and getting back into a more regular "movement" (I can't really call it an exercise) routine, consisting of at least 30 minutes of yoga, pilates or an exercise video - trying for 5 to 6 times a week. I think that is pretty much the bare minimum that any fitness expert says to do for exercise, so you can see what a sad sack I am.

And yes, I am one of those people that use exercise videos. There are a few that I have and I mix them up for variety - Crunch Pilates, the 10 Minute Solutions series (I'll do 3-4 of these together at a time), and my personal fave, Yoga Booty Ballet.

I'll be introducing my gal pals to some YBB this week. I have a bunch of the DVDs from the series and it is a mix of yoga, ballet and "booty shaking." So yes, YBB, it is exactly as it sounds, with all the cheesy goodness, but I think it does work. I did YBB almost exclusively for a few weeks last year and it really helped to tone and define my body - and you will sweat. At minimum YBB will guarantee a giggle-fest amongst the group and at least that'll burn some calories.

So fess up, ladies. Are there any other exercise video devotees out there? If so, what do you like doing? Or if not, can you recommend any exercises for the lazy amongst us?

  1. Aww congrats on wanting to get back into "moving". Although, you look great but I understand, it's more about how one feels inside. I do exercise videos too! My two favorites are P90X and Insanity. I can't do Yoga because I need to feel almost winded out to feel like I've worked out my body, so I stick with the cardio intensive ones.

    I don't excercise, so I'm absolutely no help. I do love yoga, though, I just can't find a studio around me that works with my schedule.

  3. I like Baron Baptiste yoga videos. He talks the ENTIRE TIME which distracts me from all the horrible poses he makes you get into! Some people hate him, but I'm a total fan!

  4. I love this kimono top on you -- so pretty.

    I too have been tellng myself that I really need to get moving again. During grad school, I ran 3-6 miles a day...but now I do nothing. Work and a long commute make it difficult, but I know it's all in my best interest. Maybe I should give YBB a try! I used to love ballet, and I always wanted to try yoga, so it could be the perfect combo!

  5. I so need to start an exercise program (it's hard with a 5 month old) so I think videos are the way to go for me. I'll have to look into YBB. Love your outfit, that top is so cute!

  7. I still break out Richard Simmons "Sweatin' to the Oldies" every now and then. My mom and I did that video all the time when I was growing up, so it carries fond memories :)

    I'm a lazy bum and my work schedule is very inconsistent so its been hard to get into shape. Good luck with your workout group, its always easier to do things with buddies.

  9. I am not even coordinated for exercise videos (pathetic, but true) once the warmout is over, my arms start flailing around and I can never get them in sync with my legs - it's sad. And so are the many jiggly parts on my body. I'm hoping in the fall when my older boys are in school, I can start doing the eliptical at home. Good for you getting back into the routine and feeling healthier!

  10. Lovin' the kimono top Lisa!

    I used to be a hardcore gymrat. Believe it or not, I was quite fit and a size 4/5 several years back, thanks to my 5 - 6 day dedication to the gym. Slowly I became the "puffy" girl you see today. ha ha. I still go to the gym about 3 times a week (if I'm motivated), but I think I go there more for socializing than workouts. I did get into SPIN a while back. It's tough, but fun! I currently started Insanity. It's crazy! We'll see if I stay motivate. Other workouts I tried at home were Taebo (soooo fun!) and Windsor pilates.

    YBB sounds exciting. Hope you and your lady friends have fun working out together. :)

  12. I am a die hard fan of Jillian Michales all her video's are awesome and totally kick your butt! I love the 20 min ones because they are short but work you hard! I think it's called 30 day shred. Cute OOTD! Good luck on getting back into the swing of things! I hate working out but do it out of necessity for stress relief!

  15. Housercise away your thighs. I vacumm and clean my house like a mad women. As fast as I can. I used to run. But you can't do anything when you run, but run. So I had to find a more useful form of exercise that actually accomplishes something.

    Those Clarks are the cutest Lisa! I think my friend Christine has those same shoes.

    Can't wait to see you in your Perilla Dress.

  19. Thanks for all your wonderful comments, ladies.

    For those of you who haven't had the time to exercise regularly, I'm right there with you, sisters!

    I know it is one of those things you need to MAKE time for, however, so for me, starting with 30 minutes was do-able, and I hope to be able to devote more time on some days to keeping myself healthy - and to prevent saggy butt syndrome.

    For you gals interested in YBB, I highly recommend it. No, it is not something you'd want to do in front of other people except for maybe a giggly group of friends, but I guarantee it is fun and you're not stuck doing a bunch of crunches all day. And dependent on what you're into, the YBB series ranges from aerobic routines to straight yoga and pilates moves.

    Cindi - I have P90X but I've been afraid to do it. One because I am pretty sure it'll kick my butt, and two because some of those workouts are like 90 minutes long!

    KristiMcMurray - aw, that video is a classic. I've not done it myself but have heard from people that just swear by it! Hey, ultimately, anything that gets you moving is good for you.

    Jan - I know what you mean. I can't do any of those dancey videos because I'm too stupid to follow! What I like about the YBB aerobic routines is that they start slow and build on each move.

    Sharon - lady, you are not "puffy." I think you're beautiful and you seem to have a confidence and brightness that 5'10" models don't have! And I've tried Taebo too - I really like their kickboxing routine!

    Tricia - I've done a 30 minute bootcamp video from Jillian Michaels before - holy sweatiness! The reviews had said it was too short and they didn't even break a sweat, but those people were lying!

    Geo - I could probably use some Housercise! I'm way behind on the laundry and the bad thing are wood floors is that you always have to clean them!

  20. Oh yes, I am an AVID video exerciser! My go-to DVDs have been The Firm series and the Leslie Sansone Walk-at-Home DVDs (for lighter exercise days).

    BUT - for the past four months I've been doing the Isanity workout. That'll kick your butt. I got them from my sister-in-law's husband but he hasn't had time to burn the second month's worth of DVDs so I've been doing the first month for about four months. :)

  21. Yay for getting fit and getting healthy! I used to be a total gym rat - I would go 5X a week for a group exercise class. But when I got pregnant with my oldest, I stopped going because I was afraid the high impact would do damage to the baby (stupid, I know!). Then I never went back. Now, 2 kids and 5 years later, I am determined to get fit and get healthy!

    I started about 3 months ago going to the gym on a regular basis - mostly for group exercise - spin, step, Zumba, rowing, Omniball, whatever. When I can't make it to the gym, I run in the neighborhood and I'm thinking of picking up some workout podcasts or DVD's. I'm loving this post and comments because it gives me some good ideas. As far as suggestions go, I attended a Pure Barre class a couple weeks ago and loved the workout, but not the instructor/facility. So I'm thinking of buying the DVD or the podcast and doing it at home. Lemme tell you, the Pure Barre workout kicks your booty. Your legs and arms will be trembling in the first 15 minutes!

  22. Melissa - I've got to check out this Insanity business. A few friends of mine have talked about it and a few of you lovely ladies have mentioned it too. I'm a little nutty, so that workout sounds right up my alley!

    Michelle - wow, you were a dedicated gym trouper! I've heard lots of good things about Zumba - is it some sort of aerobic dance (I may be too uncoordinated for that)? But heck, raising young kids is exercise in itself. My sister is thinner now than before she had her son because of all the running around she does!
